This investigation of the European theatre culture and the way in which the foreign acting and staging traditions influenced the Romanian Ibsenites provides new insights into mechanisms of aesthetic transmission. Thus, this study presents a European theatre landscape whose unpredictability and uniqueness cannot be confined to essentialist interpretations.

These factors are clearly demonstrated in John Gabriel Borkman, a banker who had previously been imprisoned for investing his clients money without their consent but believes himself innocent of any crime as he had not intended to steal funds or swindle them but was caught before being able to pay back the 'loans'. Borkman is married to Gunhild but as a young man was in love with her twin, Ella who although still a part of their lives, helping to raise his son whilst he was in prison, is estranged from her twin sister. Ibsen explores the despair felt by Borkman and Ella in this play. The dramatic climax and poetic beauty of his words ensures that this lesser known Ibsen play should not be overlooked.

However, his immoral lover, Rebecca and Kroll his brother-in-law and local schoolmaster try to undermine and sabotage this support. These characters provide a revealing portrait of the ethics that allow the traditional ruling class to impose its beliefs, the social political and religious changes that were occurring in contemporary society and an examination of personal guilt in what many critics have hailed as Ibsen's masterwork.

Book excerpt: Prominent Scandinavian authors from the end of the 19th century struggled with the classical themes of myth and religion, and the modern concepts of Freud and Darwin. The reconciliation of these counterpoints in the work of Norway's Henrik Ibsen, Sweden's August Stringbberg and Denmark's J P Jacobsen, forms the core of this analysis. Incorporating Diderot's definition of theatricality in painting, this study shows the tension between the image and a concomitant distrust of its reality in three of Ibsen's plays: A Doll's House; Ghosts; and The Wild Duck. Investigating the mythical patterns beneath the text, Osterud suggests that Ibsen's naturalist drama is two-fold: a clash between the sacred (myth, allegory and ritual performance) and avant-garde (utopian visions and transgressive acts). Probing Strindberg's 'The Black Glove', the book demonstrates that this challenging re-telling of the Nativity story creates a modern version of a medieval ritual drama, whereby the logic of place overrides the logic of chronology in the traditional theatre of naturalism. Jacobsen's novella 'Mogens' was said to introduce naturalism into Denmark. Osterud confronts the usual query concerning the balance between Jacobsen as a Darwinist scholar and as a fiction writer. He concludes that, rather than seeing nature as an explanation of the author's narrative, nature is an unsolved riddle to which religion and Dawinism give competing answers, creating a hermeneutic dialogue within the text.
