Book excerpt: Henrik Ibsen's drama is the most prominent and lasting contribution of the cultural surge seen in Scandinavian literature in the later nineteenth century. When he made his debut in Norway in 1850, the nation's literary presence was negligible, yet by 1890 Ibsen had become one of Europe's most famous authors. Contrary to the standard narrative of his move from restrictive provincial origins to liberating European exile, Narve Fulsås and Tore Rem show how Ibsen's trajectory was preconditioned on his continued embeddedness in Scandinavian society and culture, and that he experienced great success in his home markets. This volume traces how Ibsen's works first travelled outside Scandinavia and studies the mechanisms of his appropriation in Germany, Britain and France. Engaging with theories of book dissemination and world literature, and re-assessing the emergence of 'peripheral' literary nations, this book provides new perspectives on the work of this major figure of European literature and theatre.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the history of character in modern Irish drama. It traces the changing fortunes of the human self in a variety of major Irish plays across the twentieth century and the beginning of the new millennium. Through the analysis of dramatic protagonists created by such authors as Yeats, Synge, O’Casey, Friel and Murphy, and McGuinness and Walsh, it tracks the development of aesthetic and literary styles from modernism to more recent phenomena, from Celtic Revival to Celtic Tiger, and after. The human character is seen as a testing ground and battlefield for new ideas, for social philosophies, and for literary conventions through which each historical epoch has attempted to express its specific cultural and literary identity. In this context, Irish drama appears to be both part of the European literary tradition, engaging with its most contentious issues, and a field of resistance to some conventions from continental centres of avant-garde experimentation. Simultaneously, it follows artistic fashions and redefines them in its critical contribution to European artistic and theatrical diversity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Best known as a novelist and man of letters, George Moore (1852-1933) is the author of such works as Esther Waters, A Drama in Muslin, The Untilled Field, The Brook Kerith, and his masterpiece, Hail and Farewell. Edward Martyn (1859-1923) was a distant cousin of Moore's, and, for a time, the two were close friends. Martyn, a man of considerable wealth, devoted his energies to a wide variety of activities, particularly the Church and political activism. His interest in playwriting, like Moore's, was of a secondary nature. Nevertheless, the two pooled and concentrated their talents to make important contributions at a critical juncture of the Irish literary renaissance. In 1899, aiming to provide a platform for the work of serious native dramatists, Martyn, W. B. Yeats, and Lady Gregory together founded the Irish Literary Theatre, Martyn soon brought Moore on board to lend his experience and notoriety to the venture. The great success of the Theatre's first season was Martyn's The Heather Field, republished here, which later enjoyed brief revivals in England, Germany, and the United States. Top billing in the second season was to have gone to Martyn's fast-paced, caustic satire, The Tale of the Town, but Yeats thought the play crude and not at all suitable for a serious, literary theater. When Moore reluctantly agreed, Martyn turned the play over to them to do with as they wished. Moore then rewrote it as The Bending of the Bough. Here the plays are published together for the first time. This volume also includes Moore's The Strike at Arlingford, The Passing of the Essenes, and The Coming of Gabrielle. This last is based on his correspondence with an Austrian countess he never met, and much of the dialogue in the play is taken directly from her letters. Martyn's Maeve, written for the Irish Literary Theatre, and An Enchanted Sea, a short lyrical play first produced in 1904, are also found here. The plays in this volume were selected by David B. Eakin and Michael Case, who have contributed a critical introduction. Helpful bibliographical checklists of Moore's and Martyn's works, both published and unpublished, are also included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the Irish Literary Revival began around 1885 and ended somewhere between 1925 and 1940, the Irish Renaissance has continued to the present day and shows no sign of abating. The period has produced some of the most important and influential figures in Irish literature, some of whom are counted among the world's greatest authors. The Revival saw a reestablishment of Ireland's literary connections with its Celtic heritage, and writers such as William Butler Yeats and Lady Gregory drew heavily on the myths and legends of the past. James Joyce boldly reshaped the novel and wrote short fiction of enduring value. Contemporary Irish writers continue to be leading figures and include such authors as Brian Frigl, Seamus Heaney, and Eavan Boland. Included in this reference book are alphabetically arranged entries for more than 70 modern Irish writers, including Samuel Beckett, William Trevor, Patrick Kavanagh, Medbh McGuckian, Sean O'Casey, J. M. Synge, and Nuala Ni Dhomhnaill. Entries are written by expert contributors and reflect a broad range of perspectives. Each entry contains a brief biography that summarizes the author's career, a discussion of major works and themes, an overview of the author's critical reception, and a bibliography of primary and secondary works. An introductory essay reviews the large and growing body of scholarship on modern Irish literature, while an extensive bibliography concludes the volume.

Book excerpt: The third revised and enlarged edition contains discussions of British, Irish and American literary works up to 2020. Focussing on outstanding writings in prose, poetry, drama and non-fiction, the book covers the time from the Anglo-Saxon period to the 21st century. The feature that makes this literary history unique among its rivals is the coverage of television/web series as a particular form of postmodern drama. The chapters on recent drama now contain detailed analyses of the development of TV and web series from Britain, Ireland and America, with extensive discussions of those series now considered classics. In addition, there are several major innovative features. To begin with, each century is introduced by a survey of the socio-political and cultural backgrounds in which the literary works are embedded. Furthermore, extensive visual material (more than 160 engravings, cartoons and paintings) has been integrated. This visual aspect as well as the introductory sections on art for each century give the reader an excellent idea of the symbiosis between visual and literary representations. Further innovative aspects include - discussions of non-fictional works from literary criticism and theory, travel writing, historiography, and the social sciences - analyses of such popular genres as crime fiction, science fiction, fantasy, the Western, horror fiction, and children’s literature - footnotes explaining technical and historical terms and events - a detailed glossary of literary terms - chronological tables for British/Anglo-Irish and American literatures an updated (cut-off date 2020), extensive bibliography containing suggestions for further reading
