It has put common sense back Jules Verne where it belongs, on the topmost shelf next to the dusty canister labelled 'discarded non The series is divergent; therefore we may be sense'. able to do something with it. Eric T. Bell 0. Heaviside Mathematics is a tool for thought. A highly necessary tool in a world where both feedback and nonlinearities abound. Similarly, all kinds of parts of mathematics serve as tools for other parts and for other sciences. Applying a simple rewriting rule to the quote on the right above one finds such statements as: 'One service topology has rendered mathematical physics ... '; 'One service logic has rendered computer science .. .'; 'One service category theory has rendered mathematics ... '. All armably true. And all statements obtainable this way form part of the raison d'etre of this series.

Book Synopsis Mathematical Modeling and Optimization by : Tony Hürlimann
Download or read book Mathematical Modeling and Optimization written by Tony Hürlimann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computer-based mathematical modeling - the technique of representing and managing models in machine-readable form - is still in its infancy despite the many powerful mathematical software packages already available which can solve astonishingly complex and large models. On the one hand, using mathematical and logical notation, we can formulate models which cannot be solved by any computer in reasonable time - or which cannot even be solved by any method. On the other hand, we can solve certain classes of much larger models than we can practically handle and manipulate without heavy programming. This is especially true in operations research where it is common to solve models with many thousands of variables. Even today, there are no general modeling tools that accompany the whole modeling process from start to finish, that is to say, from model creation to report writing. This book proposes a framework for computer-based modeling. More precisely, it puts forward a modeling language as a kernel representation for mathematical models. It presents a general specification for modeling tools. The book does not expose any solution methods or algorithms which may be useful in solving models, neither is it a treatise on how to build them. No help is intended here for the modeler by giving practical modeling exercises, although several models will be presented in order to illustrate the framework. Nevertheless, a short introduction to the modeling process is given in order to expound the necessary background for the proposed modeling framework.

Book Synopsis Mathematical Models for Decision Support by : Harvey J. Greenberg
Download or read book Mathematical Models for Decision Support written by Harvey J. Greenberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 740 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is quite an onerous task to edit the proceedings of a two week long institute with learned contributors from many parts of the world. All the same, the editorial team has found the process of refereeing and reviewing the contributions worthwhile and completing the volume has proven to be a satisfying task. In setting up the institute we had considered models and methods taken from a number of different disciplines. As a result the whole institute - preparing for it, attending it and editing the proceedings - proved to be an intense learning experience for us. Here I speak on behalf of the committee and the editorial team. By the time the institute took place, the papers were delivered and the delegates exchanged their views, the structure of the topics covered and their relative positioning appeared in a different light. In editing the volume I felt compelled to introduce a new structure in grouping the papers. The contents of this volume are organised in eight main sections set out below: 1 . Abstracts. 2. Review Paper. 3. Models with Multiple Criteria and Single or Multiple Decision Makers. 4. Use of Optimisation Models as Decision Support Tools. 5. Role of Information Systems in Decision Making: Database and Model Management Issues. 6. Methods of Artificial Intelligence in Decision Making: Intelligent Knowledge Based Systems. 7. Representation of Uncertainty in Mathematical Models and Knowledge Based Systems. 8. Mathematical Basis for Constructing Models and Model Validation.
Book Synopsis Operations Research by : Michael W. Carter
Download or read book Operations Research written by Michael W. Carter and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Students with diverse backgrounds will face a multitude of decisions in a variety of engineering, scientific, industrial, and financial settings. They will need to know how to identify problems that the methods of operations research (OR) can solve, how to structure the problems into standard mathematical models, and finally how to apply or develop computational tools to solve the problems. Perfect for any one-semester course in OR, Operations Research: A Practical Introduction answers all of these needs. In addition to providing a practical introduction and guide to using OR techniques, it includes a timely examination of innovative methods and practical issues related to the development and use of computer implementations. It provides a sound introduction to the mathematical models relevant to OR and illustrates the effective use of OR techniques with examples drawn from industrial, computing, engineering, and business applications Many students will take only one course in the techniques of Operations Research. Operations Research: A Practical Introduction offers them the greatest benefit from that course through a broad survey of the techniques and tools available for quantitative decision making. It will also encourage other students to pursue more advanced studies and provides you a concise, well-structured, vehicle for delivering the best possible overview of the discipline.
Book Synopsis Advances in Groundwater Pollution Control and Remediation by : Mustafa Aral ARAL
Download or read book Advances in Groundwater Pollution Control and Remediation written by Mustafa Aral ARAL and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past decades, environmental scientists, economists and physicists have been juggling critical issues within environmental strategies and environmental management styles in order to find a feasible medium between limited resources, long term demands and objectives, and interest groups. In the search for best management alternatives, practice has undergone a pendulum swing between stages that can be characterised as frontier economics, radical environmentalism, resource management/allocation, selective environmentalism and sustainable environmental management. The next stage of management must answer such questions as: `Can there be a global - uniform environmental strategy?', or `Based on their characteristics, can different issues, different regions and different applications have unique environmental strategies?' Based on this premise, the next stage of management may be identified as risk based sustainable environmental management. The goal of this style will be the risk based, long term, harmonious management of economic resources and environmental preservation for health, safety and prosperity of sustainable populations. When evaluation of risk or risk based ranking of management alternatives enter the picture as part of the overall puzzle, then social policy, ethics and health issues assume a very important role in the management strategy. Economic incentives and environmental constraints have to be considered harmoniously, the main emphasis being placed on protection and preservation of human health and the long term sustaining of populations.

Book Synopsis Integer Programming and Combinatorial Optimization by : Egon Balas
Download or read book Integer Programming and Combinatorial Optimization written by Egon Balas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1995-05-17 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The optimistic predictions of a number of microbiologists notwithstanding, the past decade has not signaled the end of infectious disease, but rather an introduction to a host of new and complex microorganisms and their resulting depredations on humanity. The identification of new pathogens, such as the causative agent of Lyme disease and the Human Immuno-deficiency Virus (HIV), as well as the Hepatitis Delta Virus (HDV) has not only revealed new forms of clinical pathology, but new and unexpected variations on the life cycle and the molecular biology of the pathogens. In this volume a number of the leaders in the field of Hepatitis Delta virus research, ranging from clinicians and virologists to molecular biologists and biochemists describe what in their experience typifies some of these unique features.
