The Yoruba people of Nigeria consider the birth of twins a special blessing. Due to the high mortality rate of twins, Yoruba mothers are often confronted with a child’s death. The twins are believed to share only one soul. When a twin dies, the surviving twin would be unable to live. The Ibeji sculpture for the deceased twin can thus contain the other half of the soul. Yorubas do not draw a strict line between life and death. To them there is a close interaction between the spiritual and the material world. The Twin Cult is one of the oldest known cults of mankind.

Book excerpt: Portraits of a Nigerian town's unusually high twin population, in a prize-winning series In 2018, photographers Sanne de Wilde (born 1987) and Bénédicte Kurzen (born 1980) traveled to Igbo-Ora, Nigeria, to attend the regional Twin Festival along with some 2,000 pairs of twins. The southwestern town has one of the world's highest occurrences of twins, with at least one pair in nearly every family. As the two photographers sought to trace this history, they employed a number of different mirroring techniques--double apertures, double exposures and reflections--to create a vibrant series of portraits reflective of the duality central to their project. These portraits of Igbo-Ora's twin population are dazzling in their rich, colorful stories and expressive subjects, who pose before the camera in a variety of scenes. No two photographs in this prize-winning series are alike.

Book excerpt: The authoritative source for information on the people, places, and events of the African Diaspora, spanning five continents and five centuries. The field of African Diaspora studies is rapidly growing. Until now there was no single, authoritative source for information on this broad, complex discipline. Drawing on the work of over 300 scholars, this encyclopedia fills that void. Now the researcher, from high school level up, can go to a single reference for information on the historical, political, economic, and cultural relations between people of African descent and the rest of the world community. Five hundred years of relocation and dislocation, of assimilation and separation have produced a rich tapestry of history and culture into which are woven people, places, and events. This authoritative, accessible work picks out the strands of the tapestry, telling the story of diverse peoples, separated by time and distance, but retaining a commonality of origin and experience. Organized in A–Z sections covering global topics, country of origin, and destination country, the work is designed for easy use by all.

The term "African thought" has been interpreted in the broadest sense to embrace all those forms of discourse - philosophy, political thought, religion, literature, important social movements - that contribute to the formulation of a distinctive vision of the world determined by or derived from the African experience. The Encyclopedia is a large-scale work of 350 entries covering major topics involved in the development of African Thought including historical figures and important social movements, producing a collection that is an essential resource for teaching, an invaluable companion to independent research, and a solid guide for further study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book by Miguel De La Torre offers a fascinating guide to the history, beliefs, rituals, and culture of Santería — a religious tradition that, despite persecution, suppression, and its own secretive nature, has close to a million adherents in the United States alone. Santería is a religion with Afro-Cuban roots, rising out of the cultural clash between the Yoruba people of West Africa and the Spanish Catholics who brought them to the Americas as slaves. As a faith of the marginalized and persecuted, it gave oppressed men and women strength and the will to survive. With the exile of thousands of Cubans in the wake of Castro's revolution in 1959, Santería came to the United States, where it is gradually coming to be recognized as a legitimate faith tradition. Apart from vague suspicions that Santería's rituals include animal sacrifice and notions that it is a “syncretistic” form of Catholicism, most people in America's cultural and religious mainstream know very little about this rich faith tradition — in fact, many have never heard of it at all. De La Torre, who was reared in Santería, sets out in this book to provide a basic understanding of its inner workings. He clearly explains the particular worldview, myths, rituals, and practices of Santería, and he discusses what role the religion typically plays in the life of its practitioners as well as the cultural influence it continues to exert in Latin American communities today. In offering a balanced, informed survey of Santería from his unique “insider-outsider” perspective, De La Torre also provides insight into how Christianity and Santería can enter into dialogue — a dialogue that will challenge Christians to consider what this emerging faith tradition can teach them about their own. Enhanced with illustrations, tables, and a glossary, De La Torre's Santería sheds light on a religion all too often shrouded in mystery and misunderstanding.

Book excerpt: The Hellbangers are the "enfants terribles" of a sleepy, diamonds rich country. Photographer Pep Bonet (1974, Mallorca) has been following Overthrust, a heavy metal band from Botswana, Africa, and shows us a growing, exciting and thoroughly organic heavy metal community. Ten years ago, one group existed. Today there are more than ten - and their fans are growing every year. The inhabitants of Botswana portrayed in this book are tattooed, loudly and proudly dress in leather, and play heavy death metal music. Imagine the DIY ingenuity of their 'costume creation' involving harvested animal skulls and other natural elements. With names like Demon and Gunsmoke, it would be easy though to think they are thugs, but "We try to be examples. Rock is a wild thing, but also something for the heart", says Gunsmoke, the heavy metal head. Here too, the lyrics of the songs are very critical towards societies, just like their western peers. Metal in Botswana is rebellious movement against authorities. This is the story of what looks at first to be an unlikely union, yet one which powerfully illustrates how music, how heavy metal music, has become a positively unifying force in an unlikely part of the world. With text contributions written by Pep Bonet and Steffan Chirazi, and a foreword by Rob Halford from Judas Priest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alafia! This children's book, "Egbe Olukumi" was created to educate the history of the Olukumi tradition. The word Olukumi means "my friends" and they originated from the lands of Egbado (Yewa State), Nigeria. The Olukumi people had to encounter many different obstacles in their life. These events that I am sharing are passed down from elders and also recorded in books. I created a fictional character named "Ade," who is an African gray parrot, to help with the interaction and make this book fun for the children. In my other books, I do explain about the origin of the Orishas and the many different Orishas but now I have a chance to explain the origin of the Olukumi people and their tradition. Thank you, O dabo!
