Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an up-to-date review on the principles and practice of multidimensional assessment and management of the older individual, which represents the cornerstone of modern clinical practice in the elderly. The early chapters cover the main elements and scope of the comprehensive geriatric approach and explain the pathways of care from screening and case finding through to in-depth assessment and treatment planning. Subsequent chapters review the evidence of how best to apply the multidimensional assessment and management approach in defined healthcare settings and within specific clinical areas, such as cancer and surgery. Finally, the education and training challenges are reviewed and the prospects for future clinical service and research in this important field are examined. The book is very timely given the recent advances in application of this approach, which reflect the growing international realization that older people are “core business” in many clinical areas where the role of specialist geriatric medicine has hitherto been limited. Accordingly, the book will be relevant to a wide range of clinicians. The authorship comprises many of the best known and widely published experts in their respective fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medicines are the core of treatment in biomedicine, as in many other medical traditions. As material things, they have social as well as pharmacological lives, with people and between people. They are tokens of healing and hope, as well as valuable commodities. Each chapter of this book shows drugs in the hands of particular actors: mothers in Manila, villagers in Burkina Faso, women in the Netherlands, consumers in London, market traders in Cameroon, pharmacists in Mexico, injectionists in Uganda, doctors in Sri Lanka, industrialists in India, and policymakers in Geneva. Each example is used to explore a different problem in the study of medicines, such as social efficacy, experiences of control, skepticism and cultural politics, commodification of health, the attraction of technology and the marketing of images and values. The book shows how anthropologists deal with the sociality of medicines, through their ethnography, their theorizing, and their uses of knowledge.

Book excerpt: This new open access edition supported by the Fragility Fracture Network aims at giving the widest possible dissemination on fragility fracture (especially hip fracture) management and notably in countries where this expertise is sorely needed. It has been extensively revised and updated by the experts of this network to provide a unique and reliable content in one single volume. Throughout the book, attention is given to the difficult question of how to provide best practice in countries where the discipline of geriatric medicine is not well established and resources for secondary prevention are scarce. The revised and updated chapters on the epidemiology of hip fractures, osteoporosis, sarcopenia, surgery, anaesthesia, medical management of frailty, peri-operative complications, rehabilitation and nursing are supplemented by six new chapters. These include an overview of the multidisciplinary approach to fragility fractures and new contributions on pre-hospital care, treatment in the emergency room, falls prevention, nutrition and systems for audit. The reader will have an exhaustive overview and will gain essential, practical knowledge on how best to manage fractures in elderly patients and how to develop clinical systems that do so reliably.

Part I reviews the anatomy and physiology of the vestibular system focusing on clinically relevant material. Part II analyzes specific details in the patient's history, examination, and laboratory evaluation pointing to the probable site of lesion and likely pathophysiology. Patient history is emphasized since it is the critical first step in understanding the patient's complaints. Part III covers the differential diagnosis and specific treatments of common neurologic disorders. A separate chapter surveys the common syndromes encountered in neurotology. Part IV discusses general principles of treatment relevant to all vestibular disorders. Designed primarily to help physicians who treat patients complaining of dizziness, this book is also a complete source of reference to practitioners in internal medicine, family practice, otolaryngology, neurology, head and neck surgery, and neurosurgery.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: The management of critically ill patients is rapidly undergoing change as new technology for the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of these patients is being utilized. Moreover, the understanding of the pathophysiology of multi-organ failure has greatly increased, a key element in its management involving the support of organ function to allow specific interventions or time for recovery. Originally introduced as an alternative for intermittent hemodialysis, CRRT techniques are now also used for renal support not only in the traditional setting of acute renal failure, but also in other settings as diverse as liver support systems for end-stage liver disease and cancer chemotherapy. This utilization of a common mechanism of blood and plasma membrane interactions is truly an exciting advance, which is likely to be further developed in the next decade. In this multidisciplinary publication, recent advances in our understanding of pathophysiology and critical illness are highlighted, as well as emerging strategies in the management of sepsis, liver failure, acute renal failure, technical advances in CRRT and targeted intervention with these techniques. Since this publication provides articles relevant to the management of critically ill patients requiring renal support in the ICU setting, it should be read not only by nephrologists and critical care physicians, but by all those involved in the care of patients with multi-organ failure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For most Americans, staying "mentally sharp" as they age is a very high priority. Declines in memory and decision-making abilities may trigger fears of Alzheimer's disease or other neurodegenerative diseases. However, cognitive aging is a natural process that can have both positive and negative effects on cognitive function in older adults - effects that vary widely among individuals. At this point in time, when the older population is rapidly growing in the United States and across the globe, it is important to examine what is known about cognitive aging and to identify and promote actions that individuals, organizations, communities, and society can take to help older adults maintain and improve their cognitive health. Cognitive Aging assesses the public health dimensions of cognitive aging with an emphasis on definitions and terminology, epidemiology and surveillance, prevention and intervention, education of health professionals, and public awareness and education. This report makes specific recommendations for individuals to reduce the risks of cognitive decline with aging. Aging is inevitable, but there are actions that can be taken by individuals, families, communities, and society that may help to prevent or ameliorate the impact of aging on the brain, understand more about its impact, and help older adults live more fully and independent lives. Cognitive aging is not just an individual or a family or a health care system challenge. It is an issue that affects the fabric of society and requires actions by many and varied stakeholders. Cognitive Aging offers clear steps that individuals, families, communities, health care providers and systems, financial organizations, community groups, public health agencies, and others can take to promote cognitive health and to help older adults live fuller and more independent lives. Ultimately, this report calls for a societal commitment to cognitive aging as a public health issue that requires prompt action across many sectors.
