Book excerpt: Motivated by the debate about globally uniform accounting standards, this paper investigates whether firms using US GAAP vis-a-vis IAS exhibit differences in several proxies for information asymmetry. The study exploits a unique setting where the two sets of standards are put on a level playing field. Firms trading in Germany's New Market must choose between IAS and US GAAP for financial reporting, but face the same regulatory environment otherwise. Thus, institutional factors such as listing requirements, market microstructure and standards enforcement are held constant. In this setting, differences in the bid-ask spread and share turnover between IAS and US GAAP firms are statistically insignificant and economically small. Subsequent analyses of analysts' forecast dispersion, IPO underpricing and firms' standard choices corroborate these findings. Thus, at least for New Market firms, the choice between IAS and US GAAP appears to be of little consequence for information asymmetry and market liquidity. These findings do not support widespread claims that US GAAP produce financial statements of higher informational quality than IAS.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. In today s economy wealth and growth are mainly driven by intangible assets. In a knowledge-based economy the success of an enterprise is driven by intangible factors, while control over physical resources becomes progressively unimportant. In most successful companies, brands and other intangible assets outperform physical assets by a notable margin. Brands, the most valuable and sustainable corporate assets, and trademarks play an especially important role. This paper aims to show how to account for brand names in financial statements according to US-GAAP and IAS. The objectives of this paper are to present and discuss the disclosure of brands as intangible assets, in the balance sheet according to US-GAAP and IAS. Therefore, the recognition criteria of both accounting regulations will be examined. The initial and subsequent measurement techniques will be discussed, and problems in this field will be exposed and criticized. The paper also aims to show criticisms of the current regulations and to discuss possible future developments. New ideas and solutions for the problems arising with the disclosure and measurement of intangible assets and brands will be presented and discussed in Chapter four. Chapter five will include a summary of the findings and a critical statement about the problems discussed in this paper. Book excerpt: Presentation (Handout) from the year 2000 in the subject Business economics - Accounting and Taxes, grade: none, University of Applied Sciences Aalen (Economics), course: Referat in International Accounting, language: English, abstract: Before trying to explain this expression used in accounting you should know where you usually find it in a financial statement. Equity is part of the liabilities and is mentioned in the first place. Usually the liabilities are mentioned in order of expiration and divided into two sectors. The first position is the equity and the second position is the borrowed capital (liabilities). I have to say that equity is a very inexact expression. Indeed it consists of the following items, which have to been treated and stated differently concerning the various regulations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Jayne Godfrey and Keryn Chalmers explore the intricacies of the globalisation of accounting standards - arguably one of the most significant business developments of the wider globalisation process during the past two decades. They examine the key issues and implications of this harmonization of accounting standards from the perspectives of a diverse range of worldwide stakeholders. "Globalisation of Accounting Standards" shows that globalisation approaches differ significantly because countries seek to maintain varying degrees of sovereignty over their regulations. International differences in economic, political, legal, religious and social characteristics also affect globalisation approaches and, in turn, influence national accounting standard-setting agendas. The book explores why countries relinquish their existing national accounting standard-setting regimes to join the global movement. It also seeks to resolve questions such as: To what extent are national incentives altruistic, economic, political or social? Who are the winners and losers in the process? This authoritative book is thoroughly researched and expertly informed. Written by both academics and regulators, it tackles a critical and controversial issue in the globalisation movement. As such, it will be of great interest to a wide-ranging audience including: international, national, private and public sector standard-setters, economic regulators, accounting academics and political economists and strategists.
