Book excerpt: Extradosed bridges can be an elegant and economic solution for bridges with spans ranging between 100 and 250m. This novel type of cable-supported bridges has become quite successful in recent years first in Japan and then all over the world. Experienced members of the international bridge community have come together in Working Commission 3 of IABSE to share their knowledge and to prepare an SED which provides the reader with guidance and practical advise that was not available so far. This book contains useful information regarding conceptual and structural design, analysis, construction, cost and typical properties of Extradosed Bridges.

Book excerpt: Every entry follows a standard pattern: after the address and telephone number of the institution there is a brief description of its history and financial support, followed by the names of the senior staff, total number of staff, the institution's structure and services, its main research programmes and a list of its publications. For this new edition a subject index has been added, allowing the reader to identify centres of research activity on individual construction topics throughout the world. The world-wide investment in construction industry research is enormous. This unique directory is a guidebook to that investment which will enable its readers to isolate sources of advice on practical problems, information on national standards and requirements and potential research collaborators.

Book excerpt: Most high performance structures require the development of a generation of new materials, which can more easily resist a range of external stimuli or react in a non-conventional manner. Formed of research works presented at the 10th International Conference on High Performance and Optimum Design of Structures and Materials, the included papers cover issues involving advanced types of structures, particularly those based on new concepts or new materials and their system design. Contributions highlight the latest developments in design, optimisation, manufacturing and experimentation. There is also a focus on the search for higher performance sustainable materials. Particular emphasis is placed on intelligent structures and materials as well as the application of computational methods for their modelling, control and management. Optimisation problems are also covered, including those related to the size, shape and topology of structures and materials. Optimisation techniques have much to offer to those involved in the design of new industrial products. The development of new algorithms and the appearance of powerful commercial computer codes with easy to use graphical interfaces has created a fertile field for the incorporation of optimisation in the design process in all engineering disciplines.

This book was released on 2023-09-14 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Failures of structures occur in all parts of the world as the result of design errors, construction defects, abuse or misuse, ageing and deterioration of the structure, lack of maintenance, as well as environmental effects such as wind, flood, snow, earthquake and, of course, human errors. They can result in catastrophic human costs as well as heavy financial losses to all involved, including local economic growth deceleration, expensive delays and repairs, as well as other repercussions, such as legal actions to responsible parties. ‘Welcome’ effects of these unfortunate events include a better understanding of the origins and causes of structural failures, their corresponding lessons learnt, and a more effective mitigation of their occurrence through changes in codes, standards, guidelines, and practice. In several countries the investigation process of the causes of failures, responsibilities, and resolution of the consequent claims have created an active, demanding, and specialised field of professional practice – often referred to as Forensic Structural Engineering – with well-defined technical and legal procedures. This bulletin is the result of the work lead by the Task Group 5.1 ‘Forensic Structural Engineering’. It provides understanding of the origins, causes, and consequences of failures, their forensic investigations, and the lessons learnt from them. The aim of the bulletin is not only to describe different examples but, mainly, to use emblematic case studies to show procedures that can be used when dealing with structural failures. In addition to obtaining a deeper insight into the technical causes for structural failure, the reader would be duly informed about the different countries’ legal issues related to the investigation process. The bulletin is aimed at young, mid-career and experienced structural engineers who want to acquire a better understanding of failure mechanisms towards improving their design, inspection, construction, administrative, and other project-related practices to avoid pitfalls that may lead to failures. It also aims at those wanting to acquire a working knowledge of the challenging professional practice of forensic structural engineering.

This book was released on 2024-05-06 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainability in construction is a priority for both academia and industry to reduce the carbon footprint of the built environment and thus combat climate change. Numerous approaches have been developed on how to tackle this issue, wherein the implementation of eco-efficient concrete is currently considered one of the most effective measures to be applied at the beginning of a building’s life cycle. This edition of the Structural Engineering Document discusses key issues in selecting and incorporating eco-efficient waste materials capable of enhancing the sustainability of structural concrete in construction projects. The cost-efficiency of using recycled aggregates in structural concrete is shown by several world-renowned researchers. Critical evaluations and case studies further highlight the properties and performance of these materials and in various structural applications. Also, novel low-impact binding systems using industrial by-products showcase the importance of continuous research for technically viable alternatives capable of decreasing the huge dependency on ordinary Portland cement. The purpose of this document is to contribute to a broader understanding of the many possibilities for the development of a more sustainable structural concrete, thereby fostering resilient and sustainable construction practices to support the global commitment to environmental responsibility.
