Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experience a wonderful glimpse into the life of a remarkable woman. Alma was born in 1910 from humble beginnings in rural Davidson County, NC and raised one of nine children. Now, she shares with us in detail what rural life was like in backwoods North Carolina through vivid descriptions of daily customs, folklores and hardships. At age twelve Alma's family moved from the backwoods to Lexington. There, Alma's life changed dramatically when in her late teens she married and became the mother of eleven children. Resilience is the word that comes to mind when describing her character. In childhood, Alma's parent's instilled in her the value of family, church and community. During the chaotic years of raising her family she never forgot her upbringing. She worked hard; always putting her family first. In times of personal need, she sought strength from the church. Alma tells her story with a warmth and enthusiasm that will leave you laughing at times and at other times holding a tissue to your eyes.

Book excerpt: In Backwoods Witchcraft, Jake Richards offers up a folksy stew of family stories, lore, omens, rituals, and conjure crafts that he learned from his great-grandmother, his grandmother, and his grandfather, a Baptist minister who Jake remembers could "rid someone of a fever with an egg or stop up the blood in a wound." The witchcraft practiced in Appalachia is very much a folk magic of place, a tradition that honors the seen and unseen beings that inhabit the land as well as the soil, roots, and plant life. The materials and tools used in Appalachia witchcraft are readily available from the land. This "grounded approach" will be of keen interest to witches and conjure folk regardless of where they live. Readers will be guided in how to build relationships with the spirits and other beings that dwell around them and how to use the materials and tools that are readily available on the land where one lives. This book also provides instructions on how to create a working space and altar and make conjure oils and powders. A wide array of tried-and-true formulas are also offered for creating wealth, protecting one from gossip, spiritual cleansing, and more.

Book excerpt: Here is the steamy underside of rural America, the back roads, back doors, and back rooms of a town called Groom, Pennsylvania. Secrets are sacred in a place where one's business is everyone's business, and the erotic stories in Backwoods bare them all. Conceived as a gay-themed erotic take on Sherwood Anderson's Winesburg, Ohio, Backwoods is by turn poignant and pornographic, romantic and raunchy, tender and titillating. Literal climaxes are underpinned by an authentic observation of small-town lives, both repressed and unreserved.

Women raped and murdered, men strung up and butchered in place–all for sport. Corpses buried and corpses dug up, and bodies found...with parts missing. Welcome home, Patricia... But it's more than home that awaits Patricia when she returns to the quiet backwoods town where she grew up. Lust-driven frenzy and sultry dreams spark the most erotic obsessions, while something wanton stalks her from the darkest heart of the night. As the bodies pile up and the blood pours, the blackest secrets are revealed. Has the town she calls home really been cursed? No. It's been blessed. By a nameless evil older than sin. Welcome to... I have added more experiences in my early life and show how a back woods education is so much superior to an Ivey League education especially in the things that are importin. I talk about the morals we learned growing up in the back woods. Also, the respect for others and especially our elders. I talk about the joy of living with what we had and not even knowing we were poor. I talk about Coon hunting and Goats milk, fishing and White Trash. I have my family tree all the way back to Ireland on my father's side and back to Germany on my mother's side. I also talk about Church, rearing children, travel and many other things. I think you will enjoy this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The writings of William Gilmore Simms (1806–1870) provide a sweeping fictional portrait of the colonial and antebellum South in all of its regional diversity. Simms’s account of the region is more comprehensive than that of any other author of his time; he treats the major intellectual and social issues of the South and depicts the bonds and tensions among all of its inhabitants. By the mid-1840s Simms’s novels were so well known that Edgar Allan Poe could call him “the best novelist which this country has, on the whole, produced.” The twelfth volume in the ongoing Arkansas Edition of the works of William Gilmore Simms, Backwoods Tales brings together three of the best examples of his comic writing. All were written during the last decade of Simms’s life, when he had become a master of his craft. These three tales belong in the tradition of southern backwoods humor, a genre that flourished before the Civil War and produced classic tales by such authors as George Washington Harris, Johnson Jones Hooper, and Thomas Bangs Thorpe. Paddy McGann, “Sharp Snaffles,” and “Bill Bauldy” are all frame tales, told by rustic narrators in authentic dialect, with frequent pauses for libation and comment. These three pieces of writing, never before published together, stand among the best examples of American humor of the nineteenth century.

Book excerpt: A description of the events that led to the climax and eventual demise of the British campaigns in the Southern theater during the Revolutionary War. The introductory chapter presents the British and Hessian employment of the eighteenth century European method of warfare and the ways it contrasted with the colonial army's diverse and constantly changing fighting styles. The subsequent nine chapters detail the principal military efforts of the British in the South, their capture of seaports, movement in the backcountry, and the critical winter campaign of 1780-81. This almost forgotten campaign and its trilogy of intense clashes at Guilford Court House, Cowpens, and Kings Mountain proved pivotal to American independence. The leadership of the armies isolated in the backcountry and left to their own resources for survival is addressed. The British profiles include the admirably courageous direction of Lord Charles Cornwallis, his morally questionable but valorous cavalry commander Banastre Tarleton, as well as a cadre of impressive young officers such as Webster, Stuart, O'Hara, Hall, and Ewall. Swisher's profiles of the Southern colonial army details the genius strategies of Maj.Gen. Nathaneal Greene and the astute backwoods tactical abilities of Daniel Morgan at Cowpens.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the American wilderness shaped Scottish experience, imagination and identity. How is the Scottish imagination shaped by its emigre experience with wilderness and the extreme? Drawing on journals, emigrant guides, memoirs, letters, poetry and fiction, this book examines patterns of survival, defeat, adaptation and response in North America's harshest landscapes. Most Scots who crossed the Atlantic in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries encountered the practical, moral and cultural challenges of the wilderness, with its many tensions and contradictions. Jenni Calder explores the effect of these experiences on the Scots imagination. Associated with displacement and disappearance, the 'wilderness' was also a source of adventure and redemption, of exploitation and spiritual regeneration, of freedom and restriction. An arena of greed, cruelty and cannibalism, of courage, generosity and mutual understanding, it brought out the best and the worst of humanity. Did the Scots who emigrated exchange one extreme for another, or did they discover a new idea of identity, freedom and landscape?

Book excerpt: The works of Henry David Thoreau contain some of the most beautifully written and inspiring observations of nature, yet most of his readers are familiar with only one of his books, Walden, Two other gems, The Maine Woods and Cape Cod, are travelogues containing some of his finest writing. Presented here are selections from the best of these two works, including Thoreau's record of his climb up Mount Katahdin, his arduous river journey by canoe down the Allegash River, the deadly shipwreck he encountered on his first trip to Cape Cod, as well as his wonderfully colorful and humorous portrait of the Wellfleet oysterman. These writings offer a vision of Thoreau struggling with the harsh realities of wild nature and how people might live in harmony with the natural world.
