Book excerpt: For most of her life, Stefanie Preissner was a people-pleaser. From hair-raising sleepovers and endless offers of cake to unwanted second dates and unrealistic work demands, she said yes to everything - even if it scared her or made her uncomfortable. Until, one day, she realised that her life had become more about agreeing to other people's decisions than making any of her own. What did she want? And how would she figure this out? So Stefanie made a decision: she would start saying no. To everything. Hilarious and honest, Can I Say No? follows Stefanie through managing her fear of disappointing people, the thrill of setting boundaries, and finally coming to understand that she was worth more than the sum of her yeses. But is 'no' always the right answer? And what's the secret to finding the right balance so you can say YES to who you really are? 'What Stefanie captures so beautifully is that our value and worth are not tied to saying yes to everything that's asked of us' Arianna Huffington

It is not just a matter of being a "nice person." It can be rooted in your desire to maintain your self-image, the product of chronically low self esteem. It may even be the result of situations in which you feel you will gain from constantly saying yes. But the truth in life is that knowing when to say "No" when you usually say "Yes" is one of the most fundamentally important things you can do for yourself and for your relationships. Forcing others to respect you regardless of your positions and to establish a clear and comfortable persona for yourself rely on this ability. This book walks everyone who has ever felt uncomfortable denying something to others through the process of recognizing how you truly feel and tapping into your inner self so that you can relay to others how you truly feel, saying no when necessary and yes only when you truly agree or are willing to do something. You will learn everything you need to know to recognize what it is about your personality that creates a need to say yes. From understanding what it is you want to get out of other people to accepting that you do not need their validation, you will learn how to separate your insecurities from what you really think so that you can start telling people how you truly feel. Learn how to set priorities and therefore know when it is okay to say yes. By understanding the proper time to say yes, you will quickly learn how to tell the times when it is not okay and you must say no. In various interviews with parents, educators, psychologists, and every day citizens, this book provides a complete world view that helps any individual understand what it is about their personality that causes them to consistently say yes when they should not. You will ultimately learn what it means to give in and what the psychological results are of making these decisions repeatedly. For anyone who has ever found themselves unhappy due to constant willingness to sacrifice their own happiness, this book is for you. Book excerpt: We Who Dared to Say No to War uncovers some of the forgotten but compelling body of work from the American antiwar tradition -- speeches, articles, poetry, book excerpts, political cartoons, and more -- from people throughout our history who have opposed war. Beginning with the War of 1812, these selections cover every major American war up to the present and come from both the left and the right, from religious and secular viewpoints. There are many surprises, including a forgotten letter from a Christian theologian urging Confederate President Jefferson Davis to exempt Christians from the draft and a speech by Abraham Lincoln opposing the 1848 Mexican War. Among others, Daniel Webster, Mark Twain, Andrew Carnegie, Grover Cleveland, Eugene Debs, Robert Taft, Paul Craig Roberts, Patrick Buchanan, and Country Joe and the Fish make an appearance. This first-ever anthology of American antiwar writing offers the full range of the subject's richness and variety.

Book excerpt: The story is set on the high seas where a gas tanker is high-jacked by terrorist under the control of the Senate, who put it on tow to a high-jacked cruise liner, which is used as a human shield. The terrorists want to sail the convoy to New York harbor and blow it up, causing devastation in an act of revenge. The only chance for Jeff and his friends have for saving themselves is if the passengers take back the two ships before they reach American waters; otherwise, the Americans will blow the gas tanker up, killing all the passengers. The main action takes place off Sable Island near Nova Scotia, the notorious area known as the Atlantic graveyard, where history will tell there has been the loss of over three hundred ships. The flashback of when Jeff first came in contact with the deadly Senate, he was a well-known local environmentalist and was wanted for terrorist crimes he did not commit. The only way he can prove his innocence and stay alive is by pretending to be dead, return to a devastated Estuary area, search for his family and the truth. The evidence of corruption he finds that threatens to destabilize the government must be exposed at all costs Jeff is hunted by a professional killer of the Senate called Wilson, who must destroy him and the evidence before Jeff can expose it. In this part of the story, the action is set against a background of the aftermath of an explosion of biblical proportions at a gas terminal in the Estuary. The thought-provoking reality is that it could happen for real, and the establishment knows it, and they have to plan for the worst-case scenario.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries Augustine's theory of free will has been used to explain why God is not the author of evil and humans are morally responsible for sin. Yet, when he embraced the doctrines of unconditional election and operative grace, Augustine began modifying his theory of free will. His final works claim his evolved notion of free will remained consistent with his early view, but this claim has provoked significant debate. Some scholars take him at his word, interpreting his teachings on free will in light of his later predestination teachings. Others reject his claim of continuity and warn of great inconsistencies between his early and later works. Few have undertaken a thorough study of Augustine's works to compare his early notion of free will with his later theory of predestination. Free To Say No? is a detailed study of Augustine's work that presents clear evidence in Augustine's own words for a significant discontinuity between his early and later theories--especially the disappearance of the will's freedom to say "No"--and offers some fascinating insights as to why Augustine proposed such drastic changes.

Book excerpt: Traditionally few people challenged the distinction between absolute and selective conscientious objection by those being asked to carry out military duties. The former is an objection to fighting all wars - a position generally respected and accommodated by democratic states, while the latter is an objection to a specific war or conflict - theoretically and practically a much harder idea to accept and embrace for military institutions. However, a decade of conflict not clearly aligned to vital national interests combined with recent acts of selective conscientious objection by members of the military have led some to reappraise the situation and argue that selective conscientious objection ought to be legally recognised and permitted. Political, social and philosophical factors lie behind this new interest which together mean that the time is ripe for a fresh and thorough evaluation of the topic. This book brings together arguments for and against selective conscientious objection, as well as case studies examining how different countries deal with those who claim the status of selective conscientious objectors. As such, it sheds new light on a topic of increasing importance to those concerned with military ethics and public policy, within military institutions, government, and academia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Books are like people, each one has its own story. My book is a story about teenagers with an addiction for drugs and the adverse effects these addictions have on their parents. My hope is that this book will present a picture of the many changes that can present themselves in the lives of young people and parents in their battle with mind-altering drugs. Many parents, unfortunately, are lost in the complexities of our everyday busy lives and their minds are clouded to the problems that are developing before them. Many of us are either oblivious to the problem of drugs or are too afraid to admit to ourselves that we do not know what to do if it happens in our families. Parents are sadly convinced that drug addiction can never happen to their children. My wife, Jane, and I had to face that sudden realization that drugs were destroying the life of our son. I believe that my book, when read in its entirety, will give you the guidance and insight to help all parents and their children to fight drug addiction and to render proper guidance to those already in the grip of mind-altering drugs. This book will help to illuminate those hidden changes that drugs can bring into the lives of our children and teenagers, and with it the effects it will have on those around them. I hope and pray that the sharing of this valuable information, along with my own experiences, will be a positive force in the thinking of our teenagers and their loving parents. My fellow parents, it is of the utmost importance that no matter what happens and how tough it may get, remember there is no other way but up. Wherever you are and whatever the problem, don't ever stop the fight against drug addiction. I am aware that in the hard-nosed world we live in, there are a multitude of self-help books, and numerous concepts and scientific theories on how to successfully face your problems and bring about changes in your life. But I have written my book for this reason: that parents can be hopeful in a time of adversity, suffering from a family drug addiction problem. Let faith and understanding change your life around. As parents, we often read about drugs and the effects they have upon our children. Invariably, our many conversations will drift to the topic of drug addiction and whether our children are in fact using drugs, and what we can do about it. I remember sitting with a group of parents discussing drugs. Although we all agreed that the rapid introduction of mind-altering substances was a critical problem to our children, not everyone was in agreement what we should and could do about this problem if it affects our family. Some parents told us our family is very content since all our children are young, this problem doesn't pertain to us at this time. Some parents sat back and told me that their teenage children have never taken drugs. They never had to discuss drugs with their children because they knew they would never touch them. A third group of parents were honest enough to admit that their teenage son was a drug addict for years and they didn't know it, and when they found out about it they didn't know what to do about it. Parents, do these statements sound familiar? Perhaps something you have heard before but shrugged it off as something you would never have to worry about. I realize that this is a sad scenario, but very true. Too many parents are not taking the time to talk to their children and establish a drug-free family when they are young and vulnerable. The result has been too many young people becoming drug addicts. Some of them could have been prevented or helped at a young age. That initial help must come from us as their parents. We must have a constant sense of awareness of this problem facing our children today. Remember, parents, we cannot change the nature of the drug addict or his addiction, but we can help

Book excerpt: What the 3rd edition brings you: You support climate protection, quickly recive compact information and checklists from experts (overview and press reviews in the book preview) as well as advice proven in practice, which leads to success step by step - also thanks to add-on. Because as the saying goes: Everybodies Darling, Everybodies Depp. Or also: If you want to please everybody, you put yourself in the wrong. Everybody knows that, but in important situations many people don't succeed in simply saying "no". Often, the fear of social devaluation or sanctions, false politeness, too high demands on oneself or feelings of guilt are behind it. It is precisely these negative feelings that can become problematic in a negotiation, especially when it is particularly important to assert one's own position as uncompromisingly as possible. This book helps here by pointing out causes and suggesting possible solutions. We give you the best possible help on the topics of career, finance, management, personnel work and life assistance. For this purpose, we gather in each book the best experts in their field as authors - detailed biographies in the book - , who give a comprehensive overview of the topic and additionally offer you success planner workbooks in printed form. Book excerpt: Have you at some points wound up in a state where someone asks you something and you know that you should refuse, you should just say no, but you can not? It may have been the last time a friend asked you to help paint the kitchen during exams or when you had to shop for your sarcastic boss. The bitter truth is that we have all been there and learning to capture those moments and just saying "no" is one of the greatest feelings imaginable! Benefits of How To Say No:- · Stronger relationships · Higher self-esteem · Higher EQ · Self confidence · Social success · Work success · Skills upliftment · Life satisfaction This book obviously can't answer all of your questions, but it can help you to make sure that you're asking the right ones of yourself. Obviously no book of this nature can ever account for all of the dynamics of each individual relationship of each reader. This book provides a good overview, though, of assessing the situations in which you would consider saying "no" and will help you to determine how and when to say "no".

He gradually changed from a baby-faced university student to a devilish handsome young man with an agenda in pursuing communist agents to beautiful ladies in Europe. These traits had a tendency to have him loved or hated according to who was taken advantage of his availability. The ones who disliked his natural confident manner were usually fathers protecting their daughters or husbands who became adversaries. He never turned downor almost nevera ladys wishes when they were needed to make sure an assignment was successful. Loyalty was his creed with fellow associates, lovers and the three generals he answered to, and justifiable force was his trademark. Will asked for no quarter and gave only when respect warranted such reactions.
