Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early in his career, Gino Cataldi worked a kidnapping case in Philadelphia. By all accounts, it was a success—he brought the girl home alive. But reality told a different story. She had been beaten and raped, and she was scarred for life. Gino didn't escape unscathed either. He'd been haunted by what happened to Mae Lin for twenty years. Now living in Houston, Gino is called to solve another kidnapping, and it looks as if it may be the same people who did the Philly crime.

Book excerpt: Al Rose has known virtually every noteworthy jazz musician of this century. For many of them he has organized concerts, composed songs that they later played or sang, and promoted their acts. He has, when called upon, bailed them out of jail, straightened out their finances, stood up for them at their weddings, and eulogized them at their funerals. He has caroused with them in bars and clubs from New Orleans to New York, from Paris to Singapore -- and survived to tell the story. The result has been a lifetime of friendship with some of the music world's most engaging and rambunctious personalities. In I Remember Jazz, Rose draws on this unparallelled experience to recall, through brief but poignant vignettes, the greats and the near-greats of jazz. In a style that is always entertaining, unabashedly idiosyncratic, and frequently irreverent, he writes about Jelly Roll Morton and Bunny Berigan, Eubie Blake and Bobby Hackett, Earl Hines and Louis Armstrong, and more than fifty others. Rose was only twenty-two when he was first introduced to Jelly Roll Morton. He quickly discovered that they had more in common than a love of music. Something of a peacock at that age, Rose was dressed in a "polychromatic, green-striped suit, pink shirt with a detachable white collar, dubonnet tie, buttonhole, and handkerchief" -- and so was Jelly Roll. About Eubie Blake, Rose notes that he was not only a superb musician but also a notorious ladies' man. Rose recalls asking the noted pianist when he was ninety-seven, "How old do you have to be before the sex drive goes?" Blake's reply: "You'll have to ask someone older than me." Once in 1947, Rose was asked to assemble a group of musicians to play at a reception to be hosted by President Truman at Blair House in Washington, D.C. The musicians included Muggsy Spanier, George Brunies, Pee Wee Russell, Pops Foster, and Baby DOdds. But the hit of the evening was President Truman himself, who joined the group on the piano to play "Kansas City Kitty" and the "Missouri Waltz." I Remember Jazz is replete with such amusing and affectionate anecdotes -- vignettes that will delight all fans of the music. Al Rose does indeed remember jazz. And for that we can all be grateful.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On September 10, 1897, a group of 400 striking coal miners--workers of Polish, Slovak, and Lithuanian descent or origin--marched on Lattimer, Pennsylvania. There, law enforcement officers fired without warning into the protesters, killing nineteen miners and wounding thirty-eight others. The bloody day quickly faded into history. Paul A. Shackel confronts the legacies and lessons of the Lattimer event. Beginning with a dramatic retelling of the incident, Shackel traces how the violence, and the acquittal of the deputies who perpetrated it, spurred membership in the United Mine Workers. By blending archival and archaeological research with interviews, he weighs how the people living in the region remember--and forget--what happened. Now in positions of power, the descendants of the slain miners have themselves become rabidly anti-union and anti-immigrant as Dominicans and other Latinos change the community. Shackel shows how the social, economic, and political circumstances surrounding historic Lattimer connect in profound ways to the riven communities of today. Compelling and timely, Remembering Lattimer restores an American tragedy to our public memory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2015-16 season marks the 60th anniversary of the Big 5, Philadelphia’s top men’s college basketball teams—LaSalle, Penn, Saint Joseph's, Temple, and Villanova. No other city has schools that participate in a full round robin, which has grown in popularity in such a sports-driven city. Philadelphia’s Big Five highlights the history of these five schools, their basketball programs, and their unique relationship with one another. Author Skip Clayton has interviewed prominent figures from each school to get a look into some of the biggest moments in Big 5 history. One chapter focuses exclusively on the legendary coaches from these teams, including several who went on to coach in the NBA (three from Penn, three from Saint Joseph’s, and one from Temple), and four who became general managers. Clayton also provides stats on how each Big 5 team did against each other in the City Series games, the most exciting events for Big 5 fans. Some of the legends highlighted include: • LaSalle: Larry Cannon, Ken Durrett, Tom Gola • UPenn: Steve Bilsky, Corky Calhoun, Bob Morse • Saint Joseph’s: Cliff Anderson, Matt Guokas Jr., Jim Lynam • Temple: John Baum, Eddie Jones, Aaron McKie • Villanova: Harold Jensen, Wali Jones, Jim Washington • Coaches: Tom Gola, Jack McKinney, Phil Martelli Philadelphia’s Big Five is a great read for Big 5 alumni and all fans of Philadelphia basketball! Book excerpt: Table for One By Kevin J. Wilson Table for One tells a wonderful story about the love between a mother, son, and food, and how the bond and memories among those three things relate to everybody and can never be broken. It also shows how the money in your wallet is no factor when your food is cooked with love. This book takes you on life’s journey, starting out in a very poor neighborhood all the way up to dining at fine restaurants as an adult. It shows how there isn’t much difference between wealth and poverty, and it also discusses author Kevin J. Wilson’s lifetime battle with depression and the loss of the people he loved. Table for One was written after Kevin’s brother and sister died young and unexpectedly from two different things in the same week right before Christmas. He was determined to turn the grief he had into a positive, and thus the book was written. It pays tribute to the great lives that they lived and also sends a positive message of hope to others who may be going through the same things. Kevin hopes to reach out to other people who may be battling the same thing and show them they can have loss and tragedy and still keep going.
