Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graduated High School in 1971, three months pregnant. I left my mothers house with my Fianc. The only thing I took with me were the clothes on my back, the things I read in books, the things my Grandmother taught me which mainly involved cooking and cleaning, the Bible quotes and old folks tales my Grandmother used to say over and over, the few things my mother taught me during her brief and few periods of time into my life, and also a very special gift from God, which was the ability to play any musical instrument I chose to play. I thought I was grown and knew everything. What I didn't know was although I was very smart, I was also very naive. I got married in 1972 and had another baby in 1974. I worked for a police department from 1977 to 1985. I was in the Army National Guard from 1979 to 1985. So many unbelievable things happened to me during that time, both good and bad. So many more bad things happened than good that I started to think my life was cursed for some reason. It started to happen so much that finally I did not want to live any longer.

Book excerpt: MANDEEP K. ATWAL KNEW FROM A YOUNG AGE SHE WANTED TO FIGHT FOR EQUALITY. Motivated and driven, she pursued a career in law, but even when she was a full-fledged lawyer and everything had gone according to her plans, she still felt like something was missing. She felt that it was time to start a family with her husband, Samir. But little did they know how that decision would take their souls to places they never could have imagined. After multiple complications during the delivery, Mandeep gave birth to her son, JSS. The initial months of motherhood were difficult—and then, everything changed when Mandeep and Samir discovered their son had autism. Their lives became a whirlwind of therapies and doctors’ visits, but the thing that stood out the most to Mandeep was how differently her son was treated at almost every turn. Why did the word “autism” suddenly change the way the world saw her kind, hardworking son? Why was he denied opportunities granted to other children? A lifelong passion for justice and a never-ending drive to change the world led Mandeep exactly where she was meant to be. From that day onward, Mandeep and her family became advocates for autism awareness, first starting small among their friends and family, then spreading outward in their community. In Noble Victory, Mandeep and her family walk side by side in JSS’s journey with autism and teach us that across the world, we are more alike than we are different, and that even one individual can make a difference.

Book excerpt: An unforgettable and inspiring memoir of an extraordinary doctor who is saving lives in a most unconventional way. Ask Me Why I Hurt is the touching and revealing first-person account of the remarkable work of Dr. Randy Christensen. Trained as a pediatrician, he works not in a typical hospital setting but, rather, in a 38-foot Winnebago that has been refitted as a doctor’s office on wheels. His patients are the city’s homeless adolescents and children. In the shadow of an affluent American city, Dr. Christensen has dedicated his life to caring for society's throwaway kids—the often-abused, unloved children who live on the streets without access to proper health care, all the while fending off constant threats from thugs, gangs, pimps, and other predators. With the Winnebago as his moveable medical center, Christensen and his team travel around the outskirts of Phoenix, attending to the children and teens who need him most. With tenderness and humor, Dr. Christensen chronicles everything from the struggles of the van’s early beginnings, to the support system it became for the kids, and the ultimate recognition it has achieved over the years. Along with his immense professional challenges, he also describes the trials and joys he faces while raising a growing family with his wife Amy. By turns poignant, heartbreaking, and charming, Dr. Christensen's story is a gripping and rich memoir of his work and family, one of those rare books that stays with you long after you’ve turned the last page.

This book was released on 2010-10-12 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometimes doctors don't know best. Luckily, mom and doctor Susan Markel is a pediatrician who questions conventional wisdom and instead partners decision-based medicine with the best ideas of attachment parenting. Too often, parents ignore their instincts and better sense to follow their doctor's advice, such as overtreating vulnerable children, letting babies cry themselves to sleep and giving their children cow's milk for strong bones, even though strong evidence shows none of these practices is the best route. Revealing the medical industry's gaps in knowledge is Dr. Susan Markel, frequent contributor to BabyCenter.com, the world's most popular parenting site, and Le Leche League International medical liaison, and Linda F. Palmer, D.C., author of Baby Matters, in What Your Pediatrician Doesn't Know Can Hurt Your Child. This new work combines the latest research with solid advice from a pediatrician who dares to defy her rote education and big-industry-supported dogma and seek out parent- and child-centered choices in all aspects of child care. As a mother and a pediatrician with 27 years' experience, Dr. Markel has come to find that less intervention in the natural processes generally brings superior outcomes. While providing helpful how-to natural parenting ideas throughout, What Your Pediatrician Doesn't Know Can Hurt Your Child gives parents insight into many instances where standard pediatric dogma is in conflict with the best research. Parents will find comprehensive solutions to specific health concerns and issues affecting children, such as: • Nutrition, including breastfeeding • Shared sleep • Common illnesses and drug usage • Allergies and asthma • Attention deficit disorder • Emotional health • Discipline In a reader-friendly, succinct format, not bogged down by scientific digressions, this book will assist parents in making the best possible choices for the mental and physical health of their children.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the many ethical issues related to health and health care in children. It describes the field of Pediatric ethics, a unique and important aspect of the discipline of bioethics, the study of moral conduct in health care and the rational process for determining the best course of action in the face of conflicting choices. The book begins with an exploration of what it means to be a child in America and the unique kinship relationships and obligations engendered by the decision of parents to have a child, and it examines ethical principles and professional obligations related to the care of children. Each of the chapters in the book focuses on important ethical concerns. It begins with ethical issues in creating babies using reproductive technologies, and then continues with an analysis of the ethical issues in labor and delivery of a child. The book continues with an in depth analysis of the many hard choices faced by families and clinicians in the care of critically ill neonates, and then goes on to describe current controversies in caring for older children who are dying and their families, as well as ethical issues concerning adolescents, research ethics as it relates to children, issues concerning genetic testing, screening and biobanking, and surgical and medical enhancement of children. Each chapter has case examples to illustrate the real life concerns of patients, families and clinicians. The book is intended for students in pediatrics and ethics, as well as for practicing clinicians, and interested families.

Malik "King" Shields is the first man she's ever loved, but she walked away from him when he was arrested...and her broken heart was saved by rising street hustler Caesar Jones. Caesar knows Sunday will never love him the way she loved Malik, but she is a trophy in his eyes. Now the father of her son, he's determined to keep her by his side. Malik is trapped in a whirlwind of murder and betrayal after being hit with a death sentence for a crime he didn't commit. As he fights to clear his name, he also begins to make amends for his past...and reunite with Sunday. But getting her back seems impossible when he discovers she believes his enemies' lies. Though Sunday's heart tells her to trust Malik, she doesn't want to destroy the family she's created with Caesar. Caught in the middle of a war that can only end in tragedy, who will Sunday choose?
