Book Synopsis Surviving Southampton by : Vanessa M. Holden
Download or read book Surviving Southampton written by Vanessa M. Holden and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2021-07-13 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The local community around the Nat Turner rebellion The 1831 Southampton Rebellion led by Nat Turner involved an entire community. Vanessa M. Holden rediscovers the women and children, free and enslaved, who lived in Southampton County before, during, and after the revolt. Mapping the region's multilayered human geography, Holden draws a fuller picture of the inhabitants, revealing not only their interactions with physical locations but also their social relationships in space and time. Her analysis recasts the Southampton Rebellion as one event that reveals the continuum of practices that sustained resistance and survival among local Black people. Holden follows how African Americans continued those practices through the rebellion’s immediate aftermath and into the future, showing how Black women and communities raised children who remembered and heeded the lessons absorbed during the calamitous events of 1831. A bold challenge to traditional accounts, Surviving Southampton sheds new light on the places and people surrounding Americas most famous rebellion against slavery.

Book Synopsis Creating a National Collection by : Susanna Avery-Quash
Download or read book Creating a National Collection written by Susanna Avery-Quash and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creating a National Collection' is the first exhibition to explore the unique relationship and influence the National Gallery has had on the evolution of Southampton?s collection. The historical links between the two galleries are significant, but little known. This fruitful relationship was established from the start, when Cllr Robert Chipperfield (1817?1911), whose bequest in 1911 led to the creation of the collection and the Art Gallery in Southampton, ensured that future acquisitions would be of a national calibre. Chipperfield had the foresight to stipulate that all purchases using his Trust fund should be undertaken in consultation with the Director of the National Gallery. Kenneth Clark, newly installed as the National Gallery?s Director in 1934 took a particularly active interest in advising Southampton on acquisitions and wrote its first formal collecting policy in 1936, which essentially remains in place today.00The exhibition will include outstanding works from Southampton, alongside the loan of 9 paintings from the National Gallery, by artists including Monet, Gainsborough, Maggi Hambling and Paula Rego. The two institutions have worked in partnership as part of the current 2019?21 National Gallery Curatorial Traineeship programme, supported by the Art Fund with the assistance of the Vivmar Foundation, with Curatorial Trainee, Jemma Craig, leading on a project to explore this dynamic and ongoing collaboration. A major publication will accompany the exhibition which will tell the fascinating history of Southampton City Art Gallery, and its relationship with the National Gallery, using untapped archival material and new oral histories.00Exhibition: Southampton City Art Gallery, UK (28.05.-04.09.2021).

Book excerpt: One explores the personal journey of Steve Clifford, General Director of the Evangelical Alliance. It explores the challenges of unity as outworked both in his day-to-day marriage and home life, and national and international relations. Unity is what drives him - but not just for unity's sake. In bringing people together, we are following the John 17 mandate to show the immense love of God, who sent his Son for us. We connect to a shared mission, whether it's nurturing a church culture which is increasingly confident in the gospel, getting involved in community action or lobbying the government for a better society. The Church is the key to long-lasting change in the world - by working in unity we can transform our communities with the good news of Jesus.

Book Synopsis Love The Life You're Living by : Bryan Arndt, PhD
Download or read book Love The Life You're Living written by Bryan Arndt, PhD and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2014-10-03 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is nothing you need, for all will be provided, when you are in love with the life you are living. And when I say life, I mean your life. You did not arrive on this planet to live someone else's life, nor did you arrive on this planet to live in someone else's shadow. You and your life matter; you are not to be controlled or manipulated by anyone at any time into believing that you do not. I encourage you to always believe in the following statement and to say it as an affirmation: This is my life. I am here to live and love my life, my way. My intention and the intention of this book is this: to gently guide and encourage you to enrich your life regardless of your age (the younger in adulthood the better). First, you will work through a series of positive life-affirming self-assessments (aka, a series of steps) in Part One: Look into the Mirror. Second, in Part Two: Beauty Surrounds You, you will continue to learn how to apply and integrate much of what you have discovered or rediscovered about yourself when you are out in the rest of the world. You will also learn how to slow down. What are you waiting for? This is your life. Live and love it your way.

Book Synopsis Shakespeare and the Authorship of the Sonnets by : Dennis Hirsch
Download or read book Shakespeare and the Authorship of the Sonnets written by Dennis Hirsch and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2024-02-28 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The persona of Edward de Vere represents a contrast to the canonical, Stratfordian image of Shakespeare. His adulterous affair with a teenage girl half his age, his complicity in acts of treason against Queen Elizabeth, and the bankruptcy of his earldom due to his lavish spending all combine to paint a picture of a man contrary to the Stratfordian ideal. However, it is this unattractive portrayal of him that supports the argument that de Vere wrote the sonnets, since the sonnets themselves offer up underlying messages of ridicule, deception, avarice, and sexual obsession that doggedly champion the author's own best interests above others. This work presents an Oxfordian reading of the sonnets and the problematic life of Edward de Vere, the 17th Earl of Oxford.
