Book excerpt: This book is about liberty as it existed in one homestead community on the American frontier in an isolated high desert region of northeast California and how the Genuine Frontier Liberty was made possible by customary common law and a complete absence of government intrusion, restraint, and enforcement (IRE). It is the personal account of the author, Jon Garate, along with various oral histories from the pioneer era through the homestead era. This describes the purest form of liberty and self-governing that can exist. Here we see the Triangle of Liberty depicted on the cover—the triangle being one of the strongest geometric forms known. Liberty is supported by a triangle mounted on the great foundation stones of customary common law on one side and freedom from government on the other. The minuteman at the right of the Triangle of Liberty is taken from a picture of the author in 1964. The upper background picture is the author’s family homestead in 1980, taken from a point on the north base of Spanish Springs Peak, an extinct volcano in northeast California. The view is looking across the Madeline Plains to the northwest. The white building to the left of the triangle is the original homestead house built in 1910. The lower background picture is of the homestead workshop around 1950. This picture is looking east from the ranch house toward the shop, which is the larger central structure with the A-frame structure in front. The shop was the first structure built on the homestead in 1909. The A-frame is the smokehouse for curing meat. The structure to the right of the shop is the chicken house. To the center right is the old horse-drawn light-freight wagon, which was the first vehicle driven by the author as a young boy. The person on the right is the author’s father, Thomas Jefferson Garate (1906–1988). On his left is the author’s mother, Faye “Haley” Garate (1920–2016). The chickens are unnamed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this striking study of the pre–Civil War literary imagination, Karen Sánchez-Eppler charts how bodily difference came to be recognized as a central problem for both political and literary expression. Her readings of sentimental anti-slavery fiction, slave narratives, and the lyric poetry of Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson demonstrate how these texts participated in producing a new model of personhood—one in which the racially distinct and physically constrained slave body converged alongside the sexually distinct and domestically circumscribed female body. Moving from the public domain of abolitionist politics to the privacy of lyric poetry, Sánchez-Eppler argues that attention to the physical body blurs the boundaries between public and private. Drawing analogies between black and female bodies, feminist-abolitionists use the public sphere of anti-slavery politics to write about sexual desires and anxieties they cannot voice directly. However, Sánchez-Eppler warns against exaggerating the positive links between literature and politics. She finds that the relationships between feminism and abolitionism reveal patterns of exploitation, appropriation, and displacement of the black body that acknowledge the difficulties in embracing “difference” in the nineteenth century as in the twentieth. Her insightful examination of these issues makes a distinctive mark within American literary and cultural studies. This title is part of UC Press’s Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Book excerpt: Here is the story of how the Statue of Liberty got its pedestal when Joseph Pulitzer, a Jewish immigrant and famous newsman, created one of the first American crowdfunding campaigns to raise money for it. When Joseph Pulitzer first saw the Statue of Liberty's head in Paris, he shared sculptor Auguste Bartholdi's dream of seeing France's gift of friendship stand in the New York harbor. Pulitzer loved words, and the word he loved best was liberty. Frustrated that many, especially wealthy New Yorkers, were not interested in paying for the statue's needed pedestal, Pulitzer used his newspaper, the New York World, to call on all Americans to contribute. Claudia Friddell's text and Stacy Innerst's illustrations capture this inspiring story of how one immigrant brought together young and old, rich and poor, to raise funds for the completion of a treasured national monument.
