Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phenomenal life of Ukrainian peasant Nestor Makhno (1888-1934) provides the framework for this breakneck account of the downfall of the tsarist empire and the civil war that convulsed and bloodied Russia between 1917 and 1921. Mahkno and his people were fighting for a society "without masters or slaves, with neither rich nor poor." They acted towards that idea by establishing "free soviets." Unlike the soviets drained of all significance by the dictatorship of a one-party State, the "free soviets" became the grassroots organs of a direct democracy - a living embodiment of the free society - until they were betrayed, and smashed, by the Red Army. Delving into a vast array of documentation to which few other historians have had access, this study illuminates a revolution that started out with the rosiest of prospects but ended up utterly confounded. More than just the incredible exploits of a guerilla revolutionary par excellence, Skirda weaves the tale of a people, and the organizations and practices of anarchism, literally fighting for their lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second volume of this retrospective anthology covers the Pulitzer prize-winning cartoon strip from 1980 to 1989. On October 26, 1970, G.B. Trudeau introduced the world to a college jock named B.D. and his inept and geeky roommate, Mike Doonesbury. Fourteen thousand strips later, Doonesbury has become one of the most beloved and acclaimed comic strips in history. Over the years, the world of Doonesbury grew uniquely vast, sustained by an intricately woven web of relationships—over forty major characters spanning three generations. The complete 40: A Doonesbury Anthology presents more than 1,800 comic strips that chart key adventures and cast connections over the last four decades. Dropped in throughout this rolling narrative are twenty detailed essays in which Trudeau contemplates his characters, including portraits of core characters such as Duke and Honey, Zonker, Joanie, and Rev. Sloan, as well as more recent additions, such as Zipper, Alex, and Toggle. Trudeau also includes an annotated diagram that maps the mind-boggling matrix of character relationships. This second volume of the four-volume e-book edition of 40 covers the years 1980 to 1989 for the celebrated cartoon strip.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist takes on politics, war, pop culture—and the absurd ways they intermingle—in this comic strip anthology. While some in the Doonesbury universe seek office, others serve. Alex and her Seattle co-hordes devote their young, restless, and body-pierced energy to hooking up “flash art” with politics. Half a world away in Iraq, a major bad boy from stateside devotes himself to liberating the city of Al Amok, ruling with a steady hand, a full glass, and an economy based on looting. As fate would have it, B.D. finds himself heading upriver on an apocalyptic mission to terminate Al Duke with extreme prejudice, a storyline so made-for-TV that B.D. feels compelled to bang out the screenplay on his laptop in real time. In the homeland, Mark and Zonk join the war against trash politics, but their efforts, alas, come to naught. Walden College's acting coach, Boopstein, lets accusations of way-personal fouls force her football team off the field. Sex parties for recruits? “Who knew we were that competitive?” marvels President King, ending Boopsie's gridiron apprenticeship with two little words: “You're fired.”

The Handbook on Building Cultures of Peace addresses this complex and daunting task by presenting an accessible blueprint for this development. Its perspectives are international and interdisciplinary, involving the developing as well as the developed world, with illustrations of states and citizens using peace-based values to create progress on the individual, community, national, and global levels. The result is both realistic and visionary, a prescription for a secure future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taoism remains the only major religion whose canonical texts have not been systematically arranged and made available for study. This long-awaited work, a milestone in Chinese studies, catalogs and describes all existing texts within the Taoist canon. The result will not only make the entire range of existing Taoist texts accessible to scholars of religion, it will open up a crucial resource in the study of the history of China. The vast literature of the Taoist canon, or Daozang, survives in a Ming Dynasty edition of some fifteen hundred different texts. Compiled under imperial auspices and completed in 1445—with a supplement added in 1607—many of the books in the Daozang concern the history, organization, and liturgy of China's indigenous religion. A large number of works deal with medicine, alchemy, and divination. If scholars have long neglected this unique storehouse of China's religious traditions, it is largely because it was so difficult to find one's way within it. Not only was the rationale of its medieval classification system inoperable for the many new texts that later entered the Daozang, but the system itself was no longer understood by the Ming editors; hence the haphazard arrangement of the canon as it has come down to us. This new work sets out the contents of the Daozang chronologically, allowing the reader to follow the long evolution of Taoist literature. Lavishly illustrated, the first volume ranges from antiquity through the Middle Ages, while the second spans the modern period. Within this frame, texts are grouped by theme and subject. Each one is the subject of a historical abstract that identifies the text's contents, date of origin, and author. Throughout the first two volumes, introductions outline the evolution of Taoism and its spiritual heritage. A third volume offering biographical sketches of frequently mentioned Taoists, multiple indexes, and an extensive bibliography provides critical tools for navigating this guide to one of the fundamental aspects of Chinese culture.
