Book excerpt: In the quiet desert night, a murderer confesses to a Spanish police officer in a remote station just outside of Madrid, Spain. The cold, methodical confession unnerves the unprepared officer. The young American man has no business in this part of Spain but why has he come here to confess and who did he murder? The jarring violence gives way to a far more sinister misdeed as the plot, told in a nonlinear style, unfolds and the true nature of the crime, involving big pharmaceutical executives, a new, revolutionary cancer drug coming to market and hired guns comes to light. One man bent on revenge wrestles with his internal demons and depression as he travels through the streets of Madrid, Northern coastal Spain and Valencia on a quest to put the pieces together in a noir-style, psychological, international crime thriller amidst corporate corruption and the loss of a beloved. Grief and loss are overcome with matter-of-fact violent justice in the vein of Cormac McCarthy against the beautiful backdrop of the enchanting Spanish cities, beaches and countryside. The mystery to be solved awaits.
Book Synopsis Why Be Catholic? by : Patrick Madrid
Download or read book Why Be Catholic? written by Patrick Madrid and published by Image. This book was released on 2014-06-03 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The popular blogger and publisher of Envoy magazine offers 10 key reasons why he loves being Catholic (and you should too). Drawing heavily on poignant anecdotes from his own experience as a life-long Catholic born in 1960s, Madrid offers readers a way of looking at the Church--its members, teachings, customs, and history--from perspectives many may have never considered. Growing up Catholic during a time of great social and theological upheaval and transition, a time in which countless Catholics abandoned their religion in search of something else, Patrick Madrid learned a great deal about why people leave Catholicism and why others stay. This experience helped him gain many insights into what it is about the Catholic Church that some people reject, as well as those things that others treasure. Drawing upon Madrid's personal experiences, Why Be Catholic? offers a deeply personal, fact-based, rationale for why everyone should be Catholic or at least consider the Catholic Church in a new light.

Download or read book Dead-End Lives written by Briggs, Daniel and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2017-11-08 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Julia” nervously emerges from her shabby tent in the suburban wastelands on the outskirts of Madrid to face another day of survival in one of Europe’s most problematic ghettos: she is homeless, wanted by the police, and addicted to heroin and cocaine. She is also five months pregnant and rarely makes contact with support services. Welcome to the city shadows in Valdemingómez: a lawless landscape of drugs and violence where the third world meets the Wild West. Briggs and Monge entered this area with only their patience, some cigarettes and a mobile phone and collected vivid testimonies and images of Julia and others like her who live there. This important book documents what they found, locating these people's stories and situations in a political, economic and social context of spatial inequality and oppressive mechanisms of social control.

Book excerpt: Bad Faith tells the story of one of history’s most despicable villains and con men—Louis Darquier de Pellepoix, Nazi collaborator and “Commissioner for Jewish Affairs” in France’s Vichy government.Darquier set about to eliminate Jews in France with brutal efficiency, delivering 75,000 men, women, and children to the Nazis and confiscating Jewish property, which he used for his own gain. Carmen Callil’s riveting and sometimes darkly comic narrative reveals Darquier as a self-obsessed fantasist who found his metier in propagating hatred—a career he denied to his dying day—and traces the heartrending consequences for his daughter Anne of her poisoned family legacy. A brilliant meld of epic sweep and psychological insight, Bad Faith is a startling history of our times.
