Book Synopsis The Other End of the Leash by : Patricia McConnell, Ph.D.
Download or read book The Other End of the Leash written by Patricia McConnell, Ph.D. and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2009-02-19 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn to communicate with your dog—using their language “Good reading for dog lovers and an immensely useful manual for dog owners.”—The Washington Post An Applied Animal Behaviorist and dog trainer with more than twenty years’ experience, Dr. Patricia McConnell reveals a revolutionary new perspective on our relationship with dogs—sharing insights on how “man’s best friend” might interpret our behavior, as well as essential advice on how to interact with our four-legged friends in ways that bring out the best in them. After all, humans and dogs are two entirely different species, each shaped by its individual evolutionary heritage. Quite simply, humans are primates and dogs are canids (as are wolves, coyotes, and foxes). Since we each speak a different native tongue, a lot gets lost in the translation. This marvelous guide demonstrates how even the slightest changes in our voices and in the ways we stand can help dogs understand what we want. Inside you will discover: • How you can get your dog to come when called by acting less like a primate and more like a dog • Why the advice to “get dominance” over your dog can cause problems • Why “rough and tumble primate play” can lead to trouble—and how to play with your dog in ways that are fun and keep him out of mischief • How dogs and humans share personality types—and why most dogs want to live with benevolent leaders rather than “alpha wanna-bes!” Fascinating, insightful, and compelling, The Other End of the Leash is a book that strives to help you connect with your dog in a completely new way—so as to enrich that most rewarding of relationships.
Book Synopsis The People And Events That Made Me, ME! by : Tom Thoreson
Download or read book The People And Events That Made Me, ME! written by Tom Thoreson and published by Thomas H Thoreson. This book was released on 2024-01-29 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is this guy’s life so important that he has to write a book about it?”, you may be asking yourself. Well, you see, I have three grandchildren that don’t know the “history (his-story)” behind this grandfather’s growing up and growing old years, and I decided to write it down for them so they could read it when (and if) they wanted to read it, and while they were at it, so could their dads and mothers too, if they so wished. It would maybe answer some questions as to why I am the way I am. It was suggested others might be interested in reading about one person’s walk through life, or as it has seemed to me, run through life, so I should make it available to all. So, I think my grandchildren and their parents might find the book interesting, and maybe you will, too. Thank you.
Book Synopsis Second Line Rescue by : Barry Jean Ancelet
Download or read book Second Line Rescue written by Barry Jean Ancelet and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2013-05-16 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Second Line Rescue: Improvised Responses to Katrina and Rita chronicles the brave and creative acts through which Gulf Coast people rescued their neighbors during the chaotic aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Ordinary citizens joined in with whatever resources they had. Unlike many of the official responders, vernacular rescuers found ways around paralysis produced by a breakdown in communications and infrastructure. They were able to dispel unfounded fears produced by erroneous or questionable reporting. The essays, personal narratives, media reports, and field studies presented here all have to do with effective and often ingenious answers that emerged from the people themselves. Their solutions are remarkably different from the hamstrung government response, and their perspectives are a tonic to sensationalized media coverage. The first part of the collection deals with Gulf Coast rescuers from outside stricken communities: those who, safe in their own homes and neighborhoods, marshaled their resources to help their fellow citizens. It includes some analysis and scholarly approaches, but it also includes direct responses and firsthand field reports. The second part features the words of hurricane survivors displaced from New Orleans and other Gulf Coast communities to Houston, Texas. In many cases, the “victims” themselves were the first responders, rescuing family, friends, and strangers. All of the stories, whether from the “outside” or “inside” responders, reveal a shared history of close-knit community bonds and survival skills sharpened by hard times. This book is about what went right in the aftermath of Katrina and Rita—in spite of all that went so wrong.

Book Synopsis Raised in the South by : Seymour S. Lenz
Download or read book Raised in the South written by Seymour S. Lenz and published by Seymour Sylvester Lenz. This book was released on 2009-07 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book of short stories about being raised as one of six kids in a poor family in South Georgia. As a young boy, my mother told me that I had a vocation to be a priest and I was sent off to the seminary at St. Bernard's Monastery in Cullman, Alabama. Some of my memories are full of adventure and others are about struggle and hardship in a large family. My stories tell of the obstacles I faced, how they affected me, and how I dealt with them. The happiest stories are about my friends and the monks at St. Bernard's who influenced my life and helped me to grow into a young man full of optimism and opportunity. My experiences in life, while growing up, helped me to form my identity. They are part of who I am.
Download or read book Blink of an Eye written by Rexanne Becnel and published by Harlequin. This book was released on 2014-11-15 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: She had nothing to lose… To say that desperation clouded Jane Falgoust's judgment was a colossal understatement. With a hurricane bearing down on New Orleans, the failed nurse-turned-waitress viewed it as an opportunity—to escape her tattered life. But then she saw the dog paddling frantically in the surging flood waters. She couldn't let this dog drown. From that one rescue, her nursing instincts kicked in and she started saving people—including herself. As the hurricane subsided, Jane tended the wounded in Dr. Ben Comeaux's makeshift street clinic. Sure, her life had turned upside down in the blink of an eye—but that was bad only if you were in a good place to begin with. Now it was time to rebuild—her life, her city—on a foundation of hope.

A few weeks later, the Edinburgh press reports a major art theft from the friend's Highland estate, including a valuable Dutch masterwork that was going to pay the estate tax. In helping her friend and the team of lawyers to negotiate the ethical dilemmas of paying ransom for the painting's return, Isabel will face her first real criminals.
