Book Synopsis The People Have Spoken (and They Are Wrong) by : David Harsanyi
Download or read book The People Have Spoken (and They Are Wrong) written by David Harsanyi and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-03-10 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Democracy may be one of the most admired ideas ever concocted, but what if it’s also one of the most harebrained? After many years of writing about democracy for a living, David Harsanyi has concluded that it’s the most overrated, overused, and misunderstood idea in political life. The less we have of it the better. “Democracy” is not synonymous with “freedom.” It is not the opposite of tyranny. In fact, the Founding Fathers knew that democracy can lead to tyranny. That’s why they built so many safeguards against it into the Constitution. Democracy, Harsanyi argues, has made our government irrational, irresponsible, and invasive. It has left the American people with only two options—domination by the majority or a government that can’t possibly work. The modern age has imbued democracy with the mystique of infallibility. But Harsanyi reminds us that the vast majority of political philosophers, including the founders, have thought that responsible, limited government based on direct majority rule over a large, let alone continental scale was a practical impossibility. In The People Have Spoken, you’ll learn: Why the Framers of our Constitution were intent on establishing a republic, not a “democracy” How democracy undermines self-government How shockingly out of touch with reality most voters really are Why democracy is an economic wrecking ball—and an invitation to a politics of envy and corruption How the great political philosophers from Plato and Aristotle to Burke and Tocqueville predicted with uncanny accuracy that democracy could lead to tyranny Harsanyi warns that if we don’t recover the Founders’ republican vision, “democracy” might very well spell the end of American liberty and prosperity.

This book was released on 2017-11-06 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Ten Lectures on Cognitive Linguistics and the Unification of Spoken and Signed Languages Sherman Wilcox suggests that rather than abstracting away from the material substance of language, linguists can discover the deep connections between signed and spoken languages by taking an embodied view. This embodied solution reveals the patterns and principles that unite languages across modalities. Using a multidisciplinary approach, Wilcox explores such issues as the how to apply cognitive grammar to the study of signed languages, the pervasive conceptual iconicity present throughout the lexicon and grammar of signed languages, the relation of language and gesture, the grammaticization of signs, the significance of motion for understanding language as a dynamic system, and the integration of cognitive neuroscience and cognitive linguistics.

Book Synopsis Spoken and Written Discourse in Online Interactions by : Maria Grazia Sindoni
Download or read book Spoken and Written Discourse in Online Interactions written by Maria Grazia Sindoni and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-24 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the AIA Book Prize for a research monograph in the field of English Language and Linguistics (2016) Common patterns of interactions are altered in the digital world and new patterns of communication have emerged, challenging previous notions of what communication actually is in the contemporary age. Online configurations of interaction, such as video chats, blogging, and social networking practices demand profound rethinking of the categories of linguistic analysis, given the blurring of traditional distinctions between oral and written discourse in digital texts. This volume reconsiders underlying linguistic and semiotic frameworks of analysis of spoken and written discourse in the light of the new paradigms of online communication, in keeping with a multimodal corpus linguistics theoretical framework. Typical modes of online interaction encompass speech, writing, gesture, movement, gaze, and social distance. This is nothing new, but here Sindoni asserts that all these modes are integrated in unprecedented ways, enacting new interactional patterns and new systems of interpretation among web users. These "non verbal" modes have been sidelined by mainstream linguistics, whereas accounting for the complexity of new genres and making sense of their educational impact is high on this volume’ s agenda. Sindoni analyzes other new phenomena, ranging from the intimate sphere (i.e. video chats, personal blogs or journals on social networking websites) to the public arena (i.e. global-scale transmission of information and knowledge in public blogs or media-sharing communities), shedding light on the rapidly changing global web scenario.
Book Synopsis The One Thing We've Never Spoken About by : Elfy Scott
Download or read book The One Thing We've Never Spoken About written by Elfy Scott and published by Pantera Press. This book was released on 2023-01-31 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation into the failings of Australia's mental healthcare system, grounded in a personal story of a mother–daughter relationship. Journalist Elfy Scott grew up in a household where her mother's schizophrenia was rarely, if ever, spoken about. For many years, this complex mental health condition was treated as an open secret. Over the past two decades, admirable work has been done to generate public dialogue about more common mental health conditions like depression and anxiety. But complex conditions like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and psychosis have been left behind, as have many of the people who live with these conditions or who care for them. Part memoir, part deep-dive investigation, The One Thing We've Never Spoken About is filled with rage at how our nation's public discourse, emergency services and healthcare systems continue to fail so many people. It is also a work of care, telling the little-heard stories of people who live with these conditions and work at the front lines of mental health. Above all, this timely, compelling book is informed by hope and courage, breaking down taboos and asking big questions about vulnerability, justice and duty of care in modern Australia.

I dedicate this work to the clients of my forty-six years of therapy and pastoral work who have shared their pain and sorrow inflicted by words. No wound is more difficult to overcome than the wound caused by words. Love is destroyed by words. Families are separated by words. Young lives are placed on roads that lead to dead-ends and destructions by words. Careers are ended, reputations are lost and wars are begun all because of words. To the many who have suffered so greatly I pray this book will help others understand your pain. Like apples of gold in settings of silver is a word spoken in right circumstances. (Proverbs 23:11 New American Standard Bible)
