Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pulitzer Prize–winning film critics offers up more reviews of horrible films. Roger Ebert awards at least two out of four stars to most of the more than 150 movies he reviews each year. But when the noted film critic does pan a movie, the result is a humorous, scathing critique far more entertaining than the movie itself. I Hated, Hated, Hated This Movie is a collection of more than 200 of Ebert’s most biting and entertaining reviews of films receiving a mere star or less from the only film critic to win the Pulitzer Prize. Ebert has no patience for these atrocious movies and minces no words in skewering the offenders. Witness: Armageddon * (1998)—The movie is an assault on the eyes, the ears, the brain, common sense, and the human desire to be entertained. No matter what they’re charging to get in, it’s worth more to get out. The Beverly Hillbillies * (1993)—Imagine the dumbest half-hour sitcom you’ve ever seen, spin it out to ninety-three minutes by making it even more thin and shallow, and you have this movie. It’s appalling. North no stars (1994)—I hated this movie. Hated hated hated hated hated this movie. Hated it. Hated every simpering stupid vacant audience-insulting moment of it. Hated the sensibility that thought anyone would like it. Hated the implied insult to the audience by its belief that anyone would be entertained by it. Police Academy no stars (1984)—It’s so bad, maybe you should pool your money and draw straws and send one of the guys off to rent it so that in the future, whenever you think you’re sitting through a bad comedy, he could shake his head, chuckle tolerantly, and explain that you don't know what bad is. Dear God * (1996)—Dear God is the kind of movie where you walk out repeating the title, but not with a smile. The movies reviewed within I Hated, Hated, Hated This Movie are motion pictures you’ll want to distance yourself from, but Roger Ebert’s creative and comical musings on those films make for a book no movie fan should miss.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: February 1, 2002 marks the 100th birthday of Langston Hughes. To commemorate the centennial of his birth, Arnold Rampersad has contributed new Afterwords to both volumes of his highly-praised biography of this most extraordinary and prolific American writer. The second volume in this masterful biography finds Hughes rooting himself in Harlem, receiving stimulation from his rich cultural surroundings. Here he rethought his view of art and radicalism, and cultivated relationships with younger, more militant writers such as Richard Wright, Ralph Ellison, James Baldwin, and Amiri Bakara. Rampersad's Afterword to volume two looks further into his influence and how it expanded beyond the literary as a result of his love of jazz and blues, his opera and musical theater collaborations, and his participation in radio and television. In addition, Rempersad explores the controversial matter of Hughes's sexuality and the possibility that, despite a lack of clear evidence, Hughes was homosexual. Exhaustively researched in archival collections throughout the country, especially in the Langston Hughes papers at Yale University's Beinecke Library, and featuring fifty illustrations per volume, this anniversary edition will offer a new generation of readers entrance to the life and mind of one of the twentieth century's greatest artists.

Book excerpt: Laurie Anderson believes in repeat performances, especially when it comes to marriage. Thankfully she finally got it right with her fifth husband, and is happily living on the back side of fifty in a town known for only one thing—its sins. Now she just wishes she could create a new pastime besides standing in front of a mirror and pulling her skin back so she can see her original jawline again. Laurie is not alone. Her best friends—wacko Sally CJ, respectable Frances, and white-knight deprived Marcia—are dealing with jiggly butts, saggy breasts, and a potpourri of men with more problems than them. Sally CJ, whose thirty-four double Ds are not shrinking with age, believes sex is the magic elixir for all evils. Frances, who just ended a dead-end relationship, is approaching aging through wine and expensive face creams. Marcia, a widow who has the ability to attract guys with major character flaws, is unintentionally transforming into a nun. As the women search for their next relationship, they reflect on youthful escapades and eventually create rules to guide them through the unfamiliar territory of Internet and blind dating. Menopausal Killer Sharks is an amusing, heartfelt tale centered around four middle-aged women who bravely face the third act of life with humor and, most importantly, each other.

Metanoia: A Catholic Book Series, Book Number One: “Down That Way Lies Death” is the author’s first publication in a series of Catholic books. In “Down That Way Lies Death,” the author sets forth his personal account of why he returned to the Roman Catholic Church, in mid-life. He is publishing it to testify and/or witness to the Reality, Truth, and Love that is God, especially in light of the current crisis of faith in the increasingly post-Christian, hedonistic, nihilist, transhuman, and occult West. Finally, this book and those that follow are part of the author’s personal response to and promotion of the Church’s “universal call to holiness” (Lumen Gentium) and the “new evangelization” (Novo Millenio Ineunte), in the electronically connected virtual world of the Internet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn to communicate with your dog—using their language “Good reading for dog lovers and an immensely useful manual for dog owners.”—The Washington Post An Applied Animal Behaviorist and dog trainer with more than twenty years’ experience, Dr. Patricia McConnell reveals a revolutionary new perspective on our relationship with dogs—sharing insights on how “man’s best friend” might interpret our behavior, as well as essential advice on how to interact with our four-legged friends in ways that bring out the best in them. After all, humans and dogs are two entirely different species, each shaped by its individual evolutionary heritage. Quite simply, humans are primates and dogs are canids (as are wolves, coyotes, and foxes). Since we each speak a different native tongue, a lot gets lost in the translation. This marvelous guide demonstrates how even the slightest changes in our voices and in the ways we stand can help dogs understand what we want. Inside you will discover: • How you can get your dog to come when called by acting less like a primate and more like a dog • Why the advice to “get dominance” over your dog can cause problems • Why “rough and tumble primate play” can lead to trouble—and how to play with your dog in ways that are fun and keep him out of mischief • How dogs and humans share personality types—and why most dogs want to live with benevolent leaders rather than “alpha wanna-bes!” Fascinating, insightful, and compelling, The Other End of the Leash is a book that strives to help you connect with your dog in a completely new way—so as to enrich that most rewarding of relationships.

Book excerpt: Metanoia: A Catholic Book Series, Book Number Two: Prayer and the Tingling Grace is the author’s second publication in a series of Catholic books. In Prayer and the Tingling Grace, the author sets forth his experience with what he calls the tingling grace. The tingling grace is a “grace of prayer,” according to one of the author’s past confessors, a Carmelite priest. As such, it has most commonly been experienced by novice monks and nuns during prayer. However, according to the Carmelite priest, about five percent of lay Catholics also experience it. In the pages that follow, the author recounts his understanding of and experiences with the tingling grace, a sensible manifestation of actual grace given by a loving and guiding God to encourage the performance of salvific and salutary acts, such as prayer, frequenting the sacraments, spiritual reading, spiritual and corporeal works of mercy, and discernment of one's vocation. He is publishing it to testify or witness to God’s love, sanctification, and guidance of Catholics through this amazing grace, in light of the current crisis of faith, inside and outside the Church. Finally, this book is part of the author’s lay apostolate of Roman Catholic witness, as well as the author’s response to and promotion of the Church’s “universal call to holiness” (Lumen Gentium) and the “new evangelization” (Novo Millenio Ineunte), in the electronically and globally connected virtual world of the Internet.

Don’t miss your chance to take this unforgettable journey with the Cabrelli women!” —Lisa Wingate, Book of the Month From “a master of visual and palpable detail” (The Washington Post), comes a lush, immersive novel about three generations of Tuscan artisans with one remarkable secret. Epic in scope and resplendent with the glorious themes of identity and belonging, The Good Left Undone unfolds in breathtaking turns. Matelda, the Cabrelli family’s matriarch, has always been brusque and opinionated. Now, as she faces the end of her life, she is determined to share a long-held secret with her family about her own mother’s great love story: with her childhood friend, Silvio, and with dashing Scottish sea captain John Lawrie McVicars, the father Matelda never knew. . . . In the halcyon past, Domenica Cabrelli thrives in the coastal town of Viareggio until her beloved home becomes unsafe when Italy teeters on the brink of World War II. Her journey takes her from the rocky shores of Marseille to the mystical beauty of Scotland to the dangers of wartime Liverpool—where Italian Scots are imprisoned without cause—as Domenica experiences love, loss, and grief while she longs for home. A hundred years later, her daughter, Matelda, and her granddaughter, Anina, face the same big questions about life and their family’s legacy, while Matelda contemplates what is worth fighting for. But Matelda is running out of time, and the two timelines intersect and weave together in unexpected and heartbreaking ways that lead the family to shocking revelations and, ultimately, redemption.
