From barbershop encounters with Malcolm X to death threats at Illinois State University and gunfire at Towson State, Pruitt provides a powerful narrative poised at the intersection of social justice, higher education and politics. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life Among the Paiutes (1883) is a book by Sarah Winnemucca. Written toward the end of a lifetime of advocacy on behalf of Native Americans, Life Among the Paiutes is a hybrid work of history and memoir by Sarah Winnemucca, who witnessed firsthand the dangers of unchecked occupation by US government and military forces. Intended as a rallying cry to white Americans, Life Among the Paiutes is considered the first autobiographical work written by a woman of Native American heritage. Oh my dear good Christian people, how long are you going to stand by and see us suffer at your hands?” First and foremost, Winnemucca’s groundbreaking text is intended for an Anglo-American audience, whose political status the author hopes to use as a means of bringing her message to the halls of Congress. In the memoir section, Winnemucca describes her upbringing among the Northern Paiute in Nevada, whose lives were irrevocably disrupted by incursions from white settlers and military raids. After the murder of her mother and several members of her family by the US Cavalry, Winnemucca dedicated herself to social work and activism, using her knowledge of the English language to reach a larger audience. Weaving her own story into the story of her people, Winnemucca makes a compelling case for the reparation of land and sovereignty to the Northern Paiutes, who had been devastated and dispersed for decades after making contact with American settlers. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Sarah Winnemucca’s Life Among the Paiutes is a classic work of Native American literature reimagined for modern readers.

The Swindoll Study Bible offers the best of Chuck Swindoll's wit, charm, pastoral insight, and wise biblical study directly to you as you study God's Word. Chuck's warm, personal style comes across on every page, and his informed, practical insights get straight to the heart of the Bible's message for the world today. Reading each part of this study Bible is like hearing Chuck speak God's Word directly to your heart. It will both encourage readers' faith and draw them deeper into the study of God's Word. In Chuck's own words: "This study Bible was designed with you in mind. As you read the Scriptures, imagine my sitting beside you and sharing personal stories, important insights, and hard-earned lessons that will encourage you to walk more closely with Jesus Christ. You'll discover the who, what, where, when, why, and how of the Bible: Who wrote it and when? What does it mean, and where did its events occur? Why should I trust it? And most importantly, how can I apply it today? "It's that last question more than any other that has fed my passion to publish this Bible. My primary focus in ministry has been teaching biblical insight for living . . . for genuine life change. After all, that's why God has communicated His Word to us--so that we may become like His Son, Jesus Christ, the central figure of this Book." Free app with purchase! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1600s, travelers, scientists, and doctors have claimed that “hermaphroditism” and intersex are disproportionately common among black South Africans. In Envisioning African Intersex Amanda Lock Swarr debunks this claim by interrogating contemporary intersex medicine and demonstrating its indivisibility from colonial ideologies and scientific racism. Tracing the history of racialized research that underpins medical and scientific premises of gendered bodies, Swarr analyzes decolonial actions by intersex South Africans from the 1990s to the present, centering the work of organizers such as Sally Gross, the first openly intersex activist in Africa and a global pioneer of intersex legislation. Swarr also explores African social media activism that advocates for intersex justice and challenges the mistreatment of South African Olympian Caster Semenya. Throughout, Swarr shows how activists displace doctors’ impositions to fashion self-representation. By unseating colonial visions of gender, intersex South Africans are actively disrupting medical violence, decolonizing gender binaries, and inciting policy changes. All author royalties from Envisioning African Intersex will be donated to Intersex South Africa.
