Book excerpt: The #1 New York Times bestseller The #1 Wall Street Journal bestseller USA Today bestseller "Funny, smart, uplifting, and fun, The Dog Lived (and So Will I) reminds us that animals are among our best teachers, our most powerful healers, and our most steadfast friends. I loved it!"—Sy Montgomery, author of The Good Good Pig The tale of a dog who wouldn't let go and the woman who followed his lead. Teresa Rhyne vowed to get things right this time around: new boyfriend, new house, new dog, maybe even new job. But shortly after she adopted Seamus, a totally incorrigible beagle, vets told Teresa that he had a malignant tumor and less than a year to live. The diagnosis devastated her, but she decided to fight it, learning everything she could about the best treatment for Seamus. Teresa couldn't possibly have known then that she was preparing herself for life's next hurdle — a cancer diagnosis of her own. She forged ahead with survival, battling a deadly disease, fighting for doctors she needed, and baring her heart for a seemingly star–crossed relationship. The Dog Lived (and so Will I) is an uplifting and heartwarming story about how dogs steal our hearts, show us how to live, and teach us how to love. A heartwarming, hilarious book about dogs, relationships and surviving life's challenges with humor and grace is perfect for fans of Marley and Me, The Middle Place and A Dog's Purpose will love this touching memoir. Other books by Teresa Rhyne: Dogs Were Rescued (And So Was I) What readers are saying about The Dog Lived (And So Will I): "infused with emotional moments and even more so with humor. The book is a wonderful mixture of it all." "As much as this book is about thriving, not just surviving, during cancer, it is also a love story written to the beagle." "A wonderfully poignant memoir straight from the heart" "like "Marley and Me", but much better." "INCREDIBLE - heartwarming, sad, funny, stressful and comforting all at once." "A true gem for any dog lover and anyone who either has had cancer or knows/has known someone with cancer - which let's face it - is everyone." "THIS MEMOIR IS WHAT ALL OTHER MEMOIRS SHOULD ASPIRE TO." What reviewers are saying about The Dog Lived (And So Will I): "This poignant and fast–moving memoir...is proof that even a hard–charging lawyer is no match for a big–hearted beagle." —Martin Kihn, author ofBad Dog (A Love Story) "...encouraging tale of finding love and love in unexpected places..."—Publishers Weekly "A book that dares to be honest and sad and hilarious all at once."—Susan Conley, author of The Foremost Good Fortune

Her parents, Jack and Elizabeth, are doing everything they can to help but are unable to halt the girl's downward spiral that continues to gain momentum. They come to accept that unless drastic steps are taken, they may lose their child forever. Based on the author's true life experiences, the uneven, twisted road to Samantha's recovery leads from a well-to-do suburb in Westchester County to a wilderness program in New Hampshire and culminates with her stay at a therapeutic boarding school in upstate New York. Desperate to save his daughter, Jack knows he must find a way to face his fears and resolve his own issues. As the program helps Samantha to painfully dig deeper toward discovering her true self, Jack also begins to absorb its teachings. In doing so, he gains a greater understanding of who his daughter really is and, ultimately, of himself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a reconstruction of Aristotelian character education, shedding new light on what moral character really is, and how it can be highlighted, measured, nurtured and taught in current schooling. Arguing that many recent approaches to character education understand character in exclusively amoral, instrumentalist terms, Kristjánsson proposes a coherent, plausible and up-to-date concept, retaining the overall structure of Aristotelian character education. After discussing and debunking popular myths about Aristotelian character education, subsequent chapters focus on the practical ramifications and methodologies of character education. These include measuring virtue and morality, asking whether Aristotelian character education can salvage the effects of bad upbringing, and considering implications for teacher training and classroom practice. The book rejuvenates time-honoured principles of the development of virtues in young people, at a time when ‘character’ features prominently in educational agendas and parental concerns over school education systems. Offering an interdisciplinary perspective which draws from the disciplines of education, psychology, philosophy and sociology, this book will appeal to researchers, academics and students wanting a greater insight into character education.

However, the early days were a challenge, and Lucy began recording her journey in a blog as a way of helping herself move forward to a happy and sober future. For someone who defined herself by her love of drinking for over twenty years, letting go of the booze crutch was initially a challenge, but over time, Lucy began to realise how much happier she was living alcohol-free. Glass Half Full is the story of her journey from hopelessly devoted wine fiend to sober and truly happy for the first time in her adult life. As the founder of Soberistas.com, Lucy’s blog also provides motivational and inspirational support for those seeking an alcohol-free life.

A rare and precious gift.’ – Krish Kandiah One in four of us will experience mental health problems but true resilience is ours for the taking. When shame, fear and despair threaten to fill us, it can be all too easy to resort to self-medicating through consuming, working, or other distractions. Rob Merchant has tried them all and discovered they don’t deliver. Drawing on his own experience, Rob shows how healing starts when we acknowledge and accept our vulnerability. Book excerpt: Stop Whining and Start Winning: The Power of Life's Choices is an invaluable guide for anyone who no longer wants to live the life of a whiner, but would rather experience the life of a winner. Author Joel Christiansen suggests that whiners are life's drainers and takers, and that whining is so toxic it can mutate and spread from person to person. Gone untreated, it becomes a hazardous landfill of negativity and despair, which only results in pessimism and failure. In clear, simple and easy to understand language, Christiansen points out that winners are life's enhancers and givers who create positive energy and success through optimism and hope. Stop Whining and Start Winning: The Power of Life's Choices is an excellent resource for anyone who has reached his or her misery level index with whining, and has a desire for a more purposeful, peaceful and prosperous life. "A terrible tragedy and waste is when a whiner fails to see and understand the negative ripple effect their whining creates."-Joel Christiansen Joel Christiansen also wrote the book Out of the Ashes the Resurrection of an Addict. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: `Chris Mitchell was 20 when he was diagnosed with Asperger syndrome. Both his academic success and the horrendous bullying he suffered highlight the mixed blessings of mainstream education for a child with Asperger syndrome. While his eventual success is heartwarming, from today′s understanding of Asperger, the ignorance and hostility Mitchell faced throughout his early life are shocking′ - TES Extra for Special Needs ′This autobiographical account of a young man′s discovery that Asperger′s syndrome could explain his early problems and provide light at the end of the tunnel, is both insightful and inspiring. Parents of children with Asperger′s syndrome and also older "aspies" will profit from Chris′s hard won experience′ - Dyslexia Contact ′[This] is a straightforward read, full of concrete examples of how Asperger′s syndrome affects the individual but at the same time acknowledging that every individual is different. Having experienced first-hand the vulnerability of the adolescent with Asperger′s syndrome, desperate to make connections with those around him but constantly being knocked back, I was delighted to read about the friendships [Chris Mitchell] eventually establishes when he takes the brave decision to make contacts through the web and sets out on his travels. I would particularly recommend this book to those with little knowledge of Asperger′s syndrome, especially for anyone involved in helping those with a diagnosis of Asperger′s syndrome through further education′ - British Journal of Special Education `This book is a ′must-read′ for any parents of children with Aspergers syndrome and also older aspies themselves. They will be able to relate to the slightly quirky writing style and profit from Chris′s hard won experience. These children are so individualistic and often isolated from like minds, so the book will provide some solace that there are other people like them′ - Judith Stansfield, Chair North Richmondshire Community Partnership SEN ICT Consultant NASEN ICT Group BDACC Reviews and Literature Editor `This book shows how one individual with very severe handicaps due to Asperger′s Syndrome won through in the end and achieved despite such a poor beginning. This is a book which should be read by anyone who has been diagnosed with Asperger′s Syndrome or feels he or she might have this condition′ - Dr L F Lowenstein, National Association Gifted Children Newsletter ′This is an unusual book in that it is written by a man where most autobiographical books about autism are written by women. It is both very readable and well-written, with a detached an honest account of his childhood, family life and life prior to diagnosis. He gets on well with his family, and they are happy that he has written this book, and happy with the book, despite some implied criticism of how they brought him up. Indeed, it comes across as less aggressive than some accounts, so it is particularly insightful for parents and other empathotypicals who might find more black-and-white descriptions of their mistakes hurtful. As with every book written by someone on the spectrum that I have seen, it is a short book, giving a snapshot of his difficulties and joys before and also after his diagnosis, giving highlights of specific problems and pleasures. Overall I think it would be a good book for someone who recognises himself in the author, or as a starting point for deepening your understanding of your brother, son or friend, or, if you are already interested in this condition, to broaden your understanding of the ways that it present itself′ - Asperger United ′[A]n especially uplifting read for a young person or adult newly diagnosed with Asperger′s Syndrom. It also would help those unfamiliar with Asperger′s Syndrome to understand the condition much better′ - REACH This gripping and at times astonishing story will be inspirational to all adults either facing Asperger′s Syndrome personally or interacting with someone who has been diagnosed. In his own imitable style, Chris Mitchell describes his life before and after diagnosis with Asperger′s Syndrome. We follow Chris through primary and secondary school, where his lack of social interaction and anger continually land him in trouble, and where he is bullied for being different. Only his excellent memory and specialist interests enable him to continue, and pass his GCSEs and a GNVQ in Media Studies. At university he is diagnosed with Asperger′s Syndrome. Suddenly his life makes more sense, and his self-awareness means his self-confidence returns, resulting in world travel, a Masters qualification in Information and Library Management and finally, acceptance. Chris Mitchell is a Records Assistant at Durham County Record Office, and also does public speaking on the subject of Asperger′s Syndrome.
