Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are we responsible for the well-being of our neighbors and our friends and family? Obeying the command of God is detrimental in our efforts to reap, eternal life. I have attempted to share my efforts from personal experiences through the power of the Holy Spirit guiding my actions. The Psalm, in 37:25, says, I have been young, and now am old; Yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, Nor his descendants begging bread (NKJV). The author, Andrew Earl Stafford, took years to chronicle his experiences for over seventy years as he interprets how the Holy Spirit guided him to be a leader to his family, community, and nation in sharing the presence of God in our everyday lives. Andrew became aware of the presence of God at an early age as he observed how God protected and provided for his mother, Maezell, who in the 1940s, turned down welfare because she viewed it as a trap to create dependence, rather than an opportunity to succeed. Four boys and one girl to raise, Maezell was told by the welfare department that she could not own a car because it was considered a luxury. Well, Maezells response was that, she needed a car to transport her children to school, besides, she worked at a laundry until she retired. Their father, Clifford, after leaving the navy, had no choice but to try and earn a living playing baseball in the, Old Negro Baseball Leagues. His absence from the family created a situation of divorce. Though they face possible economic challenges, Maezells goal was to make sure all of her children finished high school. They all did, and most with honors and all with perfect attendances. Andrews book covers his struggles in poverty, racism, family, society, and in the realm of spiritual warfare. Although you walk through the valley of the shadow of death, theres no reason to fear evil. Andrew learned firsthand how God will empower each of us to make this world a better place to live if we are willing to wait on him.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While recruitment efforts toward men of color have increased at many colleges and universities, their retention and graduation rates still lag behind those of their white peers. Men of color, particularly black and Latino men, face a number of unique challenges in their educational careers that often impact their presence on campus and inhibit their collegiate success. Empowering Men of Color on Campus examines how men of color negotiate college through their engagement in Brothers for United Success (B4US), an institutionally-based male-centered program at a Hispanic Serving Institution. Derrick R. Brooms, Jelisa Clark, and Matthew Smith introduce the concept of educational agency, which is harbored in cultural wealth and demonstrates how ongoing B4US engagement empowers the men’s efforts and abilities to persist in college. They found that the cultural wealth(s) of the community enhanced the students’ educational agency, which bolstered their academic aspirations, academic and social engagement, and personal development. The authors demonstrate how educational agency and cultural wealth can be developed and refined given salient and meaningful immersions, experiences, engagements, and communal connections.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Am I My Brother's Keeper? provides a powerful cautionary tale about the challenges involved in enacting large-scale educational change. The book, chronicling the Expanded Success Initiative (ESI), a four-year study focused on improving the educational outcomes of 15,000 Black and Latinx males in New York City public high schools, covers what worked, what didn't, and what we can learn from the experience. The ESI model, a precursor to President Obama's My Brother's Keeper, highlights the ways that school districts can embed educational equity into the principles and policies that guide their work with students, in contrast to implementing stand-alone initiatives that may come and go. Through the voices of students, teachers, and administrators, the book informs the implementation of other large-scale district-community partnerships designed to improve opportunities and outcomes for young people who have systematically been denied both. Most critically, the book provides policy, practice, and research recommendations to inform the next generation of work with this student population. As sustained protests across the United States call attention to the ravages of systemic racism, Am I My Brother's Keeper? highlights concrete steps that school districts can take to confront racist structures and support young people of color.

Book excerpt: A Strictly Biblical Perspective Ministries Inc. has strategically designed a biblical cognitive character-based training curriculum. It is designed to equip pastors, chaplains, and faith-based instructors with insight for preparing reentry volunteers as mentors to be matched with returning citizens upon their release from prison or while incarcerated. The curriculum is designed with six modules to assist faith-based volunteers in developing a biblical perspective into God's fourfold purpose for their lives: relationships, character development, service, and reproduction. The fifth module is designed to address the spiritual warfare that ministry leaders and faith-based volunteers will encounter in mentoring the "returning citizen population." The final module is designed to assist ministry leaders and faith-based volunteers in understanding how to assist returning citizens in overcoming the effects of alcohol and drug addiction. This course will build the capacity of members within the faith-based community to minister to returning citizens in restoration from crime and addiction. The curriculum is designed to enhance the quality of care to the "ex offender population" by producing spiritually mature mentors walking in close fellowship with God. The curriculum is extremely comprehensive and highly interactive and will assist volunteers in developing a functional understanding of their roles in mentoring returning citizens through the use of scriptures, a series of individual and small group exercises.

The inspiration to write this book was the finale of a lengthy healing process. Growing up for me consisted of a life surrounded by vices, which could cause a man to become powerless. I remember relying on the Serenity Prayer God grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, and Wisdom to know the difference. The power of prayer is an awesome thing. Through prayer, I was given serenity, courage and wisdom. Serenity helped me stand still and allow God to fight the battles for me as I was only a child and was not equipped. Courage helped me tobreak the cycles and provided me with determination to beat the odds. Wisdom helped me understand that the cards I was dealt in life are required ingredients for me to become self-empowered. In 2004, God revealed to me that my purpose in life is to impact social change on a macro-level, particularly with African American males. I have realized through mentoring African American males that the same vices that surrounded me two decades ago, still exist in their lives. I am obligated through my purpose in life, to represent the survival, growth and successes of black men who by defeating the odds, are as a result, changing the odds. I pray that this book is received as a fundamental tool to help move African American males towards Self-Empowerment. If one person's life is changed through the message in this book, social change has been impacted.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Difficult Subjects: Insights and Strategies for Teaching about Race, Sexuality and Gender is a collection of essays from scholars across disciplines, institutions, and ranks that offers diverse and multi-faceted approaches to teaching about subjects that prove both challenging and often uncomfortable for both the professor and the student. It encourages college educators to engage in forms of practice that do not pretend that teachers and students are unaffected by world events and incidents that highlight social inequalities. Readers will find the collected essays useful for identifying new approaches to taking on the “difficult subjects” of race, gender, and sexuality. The book will also serve as inspiration for academics who believe that their area of study does not allow for such pedagogical inquiries to also teach in ways that address difficult subjects. Contributors to this volume span a range of disciplines from criminal justice to gender studies to organic chemistry, and demonstrate the productive possibilities that can emerge in college classrooms when faculty consider “identity” as constitutive of rather than divorced from their academic disciplines.Discussions of race, gender, and sexuality are always hot-button issues in the college classroom, whether they emerge in response to a national event or tragedy or constitute the content of the class over a semester-long term. Even seasoned professors who specialize in these areas find it difficult to talk about identity politics in a room full of students. And many professors for whom issues of racial, and sexual identity is not a primary concern find it even more challenging to raise these issues with students. Offering reflections and practical guidance, the book accounts for a range of challenges facing college educators, and encourages faculty to teach with courage and conviction, especially when it feels as though the world around us is crashing down upon our students and ourselves.

Book excerpt: Across the world, we see an explosion of unpredictable violence committed by alienated young men. Jamil Jivani recounts his experiences working as a youth activist throughout North America and the Middle East, drawing striking parallels between ISIS recruits, gangbangers, and Neo-Nazis in the West. Having narrowly escaped a descent into crime and gang violence in his native Toronto, Jivani has devoted his life to helping other at-risk youths avoid this fate in cities across North America. After the Paris terrorist attacks of 2016, he traveled to Europe and the Middle East to assist Muslim community outreach groups focused on deterring ISIS recruitment. Why Young Men is the story of Jivani’s education as an activist on the front lines of one of today’s most dangerous and intractable problems: the explosion of violence among angry young men throughout the world. Jivani relates his personal story and describes his entrance into the community outreach movement, his work with disenfranchised people of color in North America and at-risk youth in the Middle East and Africa, and his experiences with the white working class. The reader learns along with him as he profiles a diverse array of young men and interviews those who are trying to help them, drawing parallels between these groups, refuting the popular belief that they are radically different from each other, and offering concrete steps toward countering this global trend.

Giving us an overview of the social, economic, and spiritual challenges that our boys face, White gives practical tips on how we can break these chains and set them free. This is a must read for churches who are serious about ministering to our boys! - Rev. Dr. James Perkins Pastor Greater Christ Baptist Church, Detroit Michigan President Progressive National Baptist Convention My Brothers Keeper is an excellent guide for mentoring our young people in general and our young men in particular. A readable and helpful book. I highly recommend it to anyone concerned about how to reach this generation.- Rev. Dr. Kevin Turman Pastor Second Baptist Church, Detroit Michigan My Brothers Keeper is a must read for all who sincerely want every young person, especially at-risk young men reach their God-given potential.- Rev. Lawerence T. Foster Pastor The Calvary Baptist Church, Detroit Michigan My Brothers Keeper is a training manual for clergy, laity, parents, teachers, social workers, youth workers, guidance counselors and caring persons who want to develop a Mentoring Program, Rites of Passage, Conflict Resolution Classes, Liberation Lessons and use Rap music to free young, African American males from their spiritual, social, and psychological bondage. Moreover, these ministries will raise their self-esteem, fulfill their paternal deprivation, help them manage their anger, instruct them to be peacemakers, develop their moral consciousness and save their souls. If you are tired of watching our young men wearing sagging pants, rapping with profanity, using the n word, dropping out of school, getting high, selling drugs, having children out of wedlock, terrorizing our neighborhood, going to jail, killing one another, then this book is for you. This book will not only tell you what happened to our boys but what you can do about it. For too long we have rejected, ignored, or demonized black boys and asked, Am I my brothers keeper? It is time for Christians and people of good will to acknowledge the fact that we are our brothers keeper and do justice, love mercy and walk humbly with our God. It is time for us to heed the words of Jesus, preach good tidings unto the poor; heal the brokenhearted, proclaim liberty to the captives, and let the oppressed go free.

Book excerpt: When a 13 year old told photographer Brandon Stanton that his principal, Ms. Lopez, was the person who most influenced his life, it started a lucky landslide for Nadia Lopez and her small, public school in one of Brooklyn's most wretched communities. The posting on Stanton's wildly popular site Humans of New York went viral. Lopez found herself in the national spotlight and headed for a meeting with Obama, as well as the beneficiary of a million-dollar IndieGoGo campaign for the school. Here is her first-person account of what it took to get to that moment.
