Book excerpt: Borowiec portrays Cyprus as a permanent source of tension in the Eastern Mediterranean and a potential trigger for future conflict between Greece and Turkey. He describes the depth of animosity between Greek and Turkish Cypriots and analyzes the obstacles in the path of a search for a solution. Most casual observers see the conflict between Greeks and Turks on a strategic Mediterranean island as a struggle within a sovereign state. Borowiec concludes that there has never been a Cypriot nation, only Greeks and Turks living in Cyprus, separated by the hostility reflecting the traditional animosity between their motherlands. If these two groups could forget their past conflicts—as did, for example, Germany and Poland—there might be a way to end the partition of Cyprus. At the present time, however, the crisis is likely to continue with varying degrees of tension, threatening the entire Eastern Mediterranean and undermining NATO's cohesion. Borowiec traces the history of Cyprus from antiquity through Ottoman and British colonial rule and the post-independence period. He describes the break between the island's communities in 1963, the UN intervention of 1964, and the path toward the Athens junta's coup in 1974 which caused the Turkish invasion and occupation of the northern part of Cyprus. He compares the conflicting views of the protagonists—the Greek Cypriot majority and the Turkish Cypriot minority. Considerable attention is paid to the two separate economic and political entities on the island. Borowiec analyzes the futility of myriad international mediation efforts and suggests possible ways of creating a climate propitious to dialogue. This important new look at the Cypriot conflict will be valuable to researchers, policy makers, and scholars involved with the Eastern Mediterranean and conflict/peace studies.

Book excerpt: "[U]shers the reader into the complexities of the categorical ambiguity of Cyprus [and]... concentrates... on the Dead Zone of the divided society, in the cultural space where those who refuse to go to the poles gather." -- Anastasia Karakasidou, Wellesley College The volatile recent past of Cyprus has turned this island from the idyllic "island of Aphrodite" of tourist literature into a place renowned for hostile confrontations. Cyprus challenges familiar binary divisions, between Christianity and Islam, Greeks and Turks, Europe and the East, tradition and modernity. Anti-colonial struggles, the divisive effects of ethnic nationalism, war, invasion, territorial division, and population displacements are all facets of the notorious Cyprus Problem. Incorporating the most up-to-date social and cultural research on Cyprus, these essays examine nationalism and interethnic relations, Cyprus and the European Union, the impact of immigration, and the effects of tourism and international environmental movements, among other topics.

Book excerpt: After eleven years of observing the Cypriot people, (of which I am one), I have written this book as a humorous, very much 'tongue in cheek' guide on Cyprus living. It is not meant to offend in any way, but what I have written is absolutely true. Once you learn to go with the flow Cyprus is a paradise. Please read with the humour it was intentionally written in.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past fifty years the Cyprus Problem has come to be regarded as the archetype of an intractable ethnic conflict. Since 1964, the United Nations has been at the forefront of efforts to find a political solution to the dispute between the island's Greek and Turkish communities. And yet, despite the active involvement of six Secretaries-General (U Thant, Kurt Waldheim, Javier Perez de Cuellar, Boutros Boutros Ghali, Kofi Annan and Ban Ki-Moon), every attempt to reach a mutually acceptable solution has failed. Here, James Ker-Lindsay draws together new and original perspectives from the leading experts on Cyprus, including academics, policy-makers, politicians and activists. All have addressed one deceptively simple question: 'Can Cyprus be solved?' Resolving Cyprus presents a comprehensive overview of the Cyprus Problem from a variety of approaches and offers new and innovative ideas as to how to tackle one of the longest running ethnic conflicts on the world stage. This represents an essential contribution to the body of work on Cyprus, and will be required reading for all those following the debates surrounding the Cyprus problem.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the ideological and socio-political discourses shaping the remembrance and representation of Britain and the Cyprus conflict of 1974 within Greek Cypriot society. By combining the official with the popular and drawing on an extensive range of oral history interviews, this monograph shows that a suspicion born out of Britain’s long (neo-)colonial connection to Cyprus has come to frame the image and understanding of British actions associated with the events, and lasting consequences, of 1974. Indeed, with the island of Cyprus still divided, and the requirement to remember a national imperative, this book has a direct contemporary relevance. However, within the existent literature, while much has been written about the political roots of the Cyprus conflict, no study has yet sought to systematically analyse and understand the influences shaping the history and memory of British actions on Cyprus in 1974. One defined by the existence of 'partitionist' conspiracies, collusive accusations and a series of memory distortions which continue to resonate strongly irrespective of the evidence that is now available. As such, by analysing the influences shaping the image of Britain in 1974, one can begin to understand in ever greater detail the Anglo–Greek Cypriot relationship in a modern context.

This interdisciplinary collection takes Cyprus as a geographical, cultural and political point of reference for understanding how conflict is mediated, represented, reconstructed, experienced, and transformed. Through methodologically diverse case studies of a wide range of topics—including public art, urban spaces, and print, broadcast and digital media—it assembles an impressively multifaceted perspective, one that provides broad insights into the complex interplay of culture, conflict, and identity.

Book excerpt: Cyprus, The Divided Island By: Dr. Niki Karavasilis Cyprus, The Divided Island, is a concise book of the most complex, intricate, and unjust history in the world narrated by people who lived and still live in Cyprus. The reader is submerged into the world of fear, suspicion, and violence among the Turkish and Greek Cypriots that didn’t exist before Turkey unleashed the invasions, Attila I and Attila II. Cyprus became a victim of violence and multiple atrocities of mankind due to the political intervention by foreign interests. The result was to divide the island in two by the buffer zone called the Green Line. The north for the Turkish Cypriots and the south for the Greek Cypriots. Cyprus, The Divided Island, describes the politics of the island from 1954 to 1977. It also combines history and storytelling so that the reader understands how the decision by foreign governments and military leaders affected the people of Cyprus. The reader also observes the bond of two families; a Greek and a Turkish family that put their friendship above all the political events of hatred. In the end, Demitri, the son of the Turkish Cypriot family marries Eleni, a Greek Cypriot’s daughter. They fall in love during the most devastating years of war, embracing the most powerful ingredient of life…love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since Britain's occupation of Cyprus in 1878 and the fall of the Ottoman Empire after the First World War, ethnic rivalry has dominated the island's divided history. This comprehensive collection of documentary evidence and archival sources offers an enlightening insight into the troubled political conflict of the island and seeks to illuminate the contested debate. "The Cyprus Issue" brings together material which scrutinises relations between Cyprus and Europe over the last twenty years, exploring the impact of international and constitutional law on the dispute. Paying particular attention to judgements delivered by the European Court of Justice and the European Court of Human Rights, this volume sets out the legal and political documents which inform the discourse on the subject. Arguing that a wide range of interest groups will need greater access to legal and political documentation if Cyprus is to integrate itself fully into an ever broadening European Union, this book above all provides an essential resource for scholars and researchers seeking primary source data on contemporary Cyprus.
