Rick is intrigued by her and finds an opportunity to get to know her: He can help her with her algebra assignments, and she can help him with his English assignments. But soon word of his friendship with Lorraine gets back to the leaders of Gamma Sigma Gamma and a meeting is called: Rick, as well as his fellow pledges, are told they are not to associate with undesirable people because it reflects badly on Gamma Sigma Gamma. Rick then finds himself in an impossible situation - he doesn’t want to stop seeing Lorraine but the consequences set his world on fire. The school board members, you see, had mandated that it be a day trip no longer than a certain number of miles from Lubbock because, in their wisdom, they reasoned that an overnighter would surely result in half the class returning home as mothers-to-be. So Jack simply took a compass with a pointy end that he placed on Lubbock, calibrated how far he could go with the circles outer extremity to conform to the school boards edict, and settled on Sligo. It turned out to be a disaster, despite Jacks having tried his best to avert such an outcome. But you nevertheless must admire him for trying. There are certain other anticdotes that came along in Lubbock and elsewhere that are described in somewhat sordid detail in this collection of newspaper columns that I hope will evoke a tear or two not in sadness but hopefully in joy as I delve into occasional supercilious silliness while exploring some of lifes foibles that have cropped up along the way. And as you, dear reader, travel lifes byways, please always be cognizant of my old Uncle Bens deeply thought-out truism which is, to wit, that it takes a mighty big dog to weigh a ton. -- Jerry W. Born in Cartersville, Georgia in 1950, Delores Faye Phillips spent much of her childhood in Georgia before moving to Cleveland, Ohio. Best known for her 2004 novel The Darkest Child, which follows the Quinn family as they attempt to survive and escape racism, lynchings, and poverty in Jim Crow Georgia during the 1950s, Phillips wrote much more than that. While the novel was met with critical acclaim (won Black Caucus of the ALA Award and was a nominee for the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award, Phillips), little is known about Phillips herself or about her other writings. In fact, in the 2018 reissue of The Darkest Child, Tayari Jones remarks in the introduction that when she heard Phillips had passed away in 2014, she was "weighted down with longing for the other books that she would never write." This volume, then, corrects the misconception that The Darkest Child was Phillips's only published work. Rather, it establishes her as an experienced and prolific writer who created multi-genre literature throughout her life. It paints a broader picture of Phillips, who was not just a novelist, but also a poet and short story writer as well. Much like Alice Walker's recovery work on Zora Neale Hurston in the 1970s was critical to a revival and appreciation of Hurston as "a genius of the South," Stumbling Blocks expands the legacy and illuminates an under-represented writer who is uniquely situated at the intersections of multiple identities including race, gender, disability, and region. In addition to the sequel to The Darkest Child, this collection also includes an unfinished third novel (No Ordinary Rain), ten poems, seven short stories, contextualizing essays, and an in-depth biography of Phillips.
