This book was released on 2017-12-26 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hypnotic Therapeutics in Theory and Practice, Treatment by Suggestion, Vol. 1 Seven years have elapsed since the author of this monograph, in response to requests from many friends of his work, published in a manual entitled Hypnotism in Mental and Moral Culture, the conclusions derived from a series of experiments with Suggestion as a means of dealing with moral obliquity and of developing and exalting mind power. Since the appearance of the initial volume, he has devoted his attention, exclusively and with little interruption, to a practical application of suggestional methods in the treatment of a most instructive miscellany of physical and mental conditions. The present book is thus no mere lattermath. It is a record of many thousand recent experiences, covering seven years of investigation. An ever growing interest on the part of enlightened men and women in psychical therapeutics, supplemented by his own apprehension of the force of mind as a singularly potent curative instrumentality in the fields of medicine and psychiatry, and as a regenerating power in that of criminal anthropology, would seem to justify the author in placing the results of his personal experience, together with his conception of the psychology of suggestion, at the disposal of an intelligent public. This he essays to do, modestly, but with the courage of conviction, in the pages that follow. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of Hypnosis is the long overdue successor to Fromm and Nash's Contemporary Hypnosis Research (Guilford Press), which has been regarded as the field's authoritative scholarly reference for over 35 years. This new book is a comprehensive summary of where field has been, where it stands today, and its future directions. The volume's lucid and engaging chapters on the scientific background to the field, fully live up to this uncompromising scholarly legacy. In addition, the scope of the book includes 17 clinical chapters which comprehensively describe how hypnosis is best used with patients across a spectrum of disorders and applied settings. Authored by the world's leading practitioners these contributions are sophisticated, inspiring, and richly illustrated with case examples and session transcripts. For postgraduate students, researchers and clinicians, or anyone wanting to understand hypnosis as a form of treatment, this is the starting point. Unequalled in its breadth and quality, The Oxford Handbook of Hypnosis is the definitive reference text in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Treatment by Hypnotism and Suggestion: Or Psycho-Therapeutics The seven years which have elapsed since the publication of the fourth edition of this work have not been marked by any striking development of hypnotic theory or practice. England still continues much behind other countries in taking up the treatment; but there is much less prejudice against it than formerly, especially among medical men. Perhaps the decrease in the amount of acute and gross disease, and the increase of functional and nervous disorders, have something to do with this changed attitude. The growth of fantastic systems of 'mind-cure' is a real danger to scientific medicine, as well as to the public, and the study of psycho-therapeutics will do more than anything else to help us to understand and combat these forms of quackery. They flourish because so many medical men in the past have ignored the psychical factor in disease, and the public, therefore, have been constrained to seek advice outside the profession. The formation of an English society, composed of medical men interested in the theory and practice of suggestive therapeutics, will afford the encouragement and support so much needed by isolated practitioners, and will bring to light much excellent material which is being lost for want of collection. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hypnotism and Treatment by Suggestion IT is not easy to do justice to such a wide subject as Hypnotism and Treatment by Suggestion in the limited space at my disposal, and my ditficulties are increased by the conflicting Opinions that still exist as to the real nature of the so-called hypnotic state. I have attempted, however, to deal fully and clearly with all practical points, especially the methods of employing suggestion, the causes which influence suggestibility, and the class of cases suit able for this form of treatment. My aim throughout has been to give such practical information as might be really valuable to those who wish to employ suggestion in their practice. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Suggestion, Its Law and Application: Or the Principal and Practice of Psycho-Therapeutics The theory of psycho-therapeutics has been dis cussed at some length and the practice of this new science has been somewhat illustrated. In another book there will be discussed the spiritual phases ofthe utilization of these principles commanding so much attention to-day. The author has used the words conscious and subconscious as applying to mind, as the best terms in the present state of the nomenclature. The reading on these subjects has been extensive on the part of the author and his investigations have been as thorough as possible and he has incorporated the results of these things in this work. He has repeated many things in different ways so that the suggestions shall anchor and may be reproduced by the reader and student. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Suggestion and Mental Analysis: An Outline of Theory and Practice of Mind Cure The call for a second edition has followed so quickly upon the publication of the first that occasion has not arisen for any great change in the scope or plan of this book. But I have taken the opportunity to go carefully through the text, removing crudities of style in certain places, and altering and supplementing the wording in others where perusal of reviews of the book indicated its necessity, to obviate future misunderstanding. An additional chapter (chapter XIII) has been added in order to emphasize the fact of the incompleteness of present theories of suggestion and the. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hypnotism and Suggestion in Therapeutics, Education, and Reform The volume here presented does not assume to be a systematic treatise upon hypnotism, nor even upon its therapeutic uses; for that the works of Bernheim, Moll, Wetterstrand, Tuckey, and others may suffice - but there are certain phases of hypnotism which seem to the author to be of special interest and present importance, and it is for the purpose of distinctly presenting these special phases that the following chapters have been prepared. Hypnotism to the medical profession has not been a specially welcome guest, either in England or America; it has been neglected, misunderstood, and misjudged; indeed the time for fully appreciating the effects of mental states upon physical conditions, and of one mind upon another, has only newly arrived. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hypnotism or Suggestion and Psychotherapy; A Study of the Psychological, Psycho-Physiological and Therapeutic Aspects of Hypnotism The wish, which has been expressed to me from many quar ters, that I should place this article, in a short, comprehensive form, before the whole medical profession, and give the chief facts about hypnotism and the up-to-date theories, impelled me to publish the work in book form, with a number of supple mentary data. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hypnotism: Including a Study of the Chief Points of Psycho-Therapeutics and Occultism MY numerous other duties have, unfortunately, delayed the appearance of this edition of my book, in spite of the fact that the third has long been sold out. In the present, fourth edition, I have completely revised my former woi'k and made many important additions thereto. I have endeavoured to bring it into line with our present-day knowledge, and have laid Special stress on the universal importance which has become attached to hypnotism and suggestion during the last ten years. I have given the narrowest limits possible to the concept suggestion, with the view of better differentiating sug gestion from other psychic process than was formerly done. Relatively speaking, the fewest alterations have been made in the chapters on symptomatology and post-hypnotic suggestion. Very little has been added to our knowledge of these questions during the last few years, and it would appear that this branch of hypnotic research is fairly exhausted, though, of course, it may one day happen that it will have to go through a searching revision which will prove instructive.
