Book excerpt: Finding True Magic is the primary training text for the Transpersonal Hypnotherapy/NLP Certification Program offered by the Institute for Therapeutic Learning. Finding True Magic and the Transpersonal Hypnotherapy/NLP trainings are appropriate for laypeople seeking personal growth, as well as for therapists and other professionals intent on advancing their therapeutic skills. In fact, about 50 per cent of ITL students take the training primarily for personal development. This book explores the possibilities for recognizing and freeing ourselves from a destructive process of perceiving, thinking, and acting that can be viewed as a pernicious worldwide syndrome. Unlike other ailments, which we strive to isolate and cure, this insidious fever has a characteristic that makes us blind to its presence: we come to identify its symptoms as our own true self. We lovingly speak of this disease as our ego, our sense of limited separate selfhood. Jack Elias calls it "egoic-minding," because it is a process, not a thing. Egoic-minding is a fragmented, biased way of perceiving and thinking. It can be viewed as a sort of destructive hypnotic trance that causes us to experience each other as strangers, as different, as threats. The delirium of this trance causes us to do violence to each other and to our world, without ever recognizing that it (our egoic thought process) is the true enemy. By synthesizing insights and techniques of Eastern and Western philosophy and psychology, Finding True Magic explores various ways to disperse the feverish trance of egoic-minding, heal the trauma it causes, and wake us up to the sacred magic of our true Self. This true inner Self is the wellspring of our capacity for cooperation, community-building, and the celebration of life. Everyone has the right to the make use of the essential insights of healing communication, without resorting to the long-term expense of a professional intermediary. Therapy should change, simply because there is a more effective approach to healing and personal growth. That approach, the subject of this book, relies on each person's inherent goodness, a resource that is surprisingly easy to contact in the space between egoic thoughts.

Book excerpt: Once thought pure entertainment akin to magic acts, hypnosis is now a growing field being practiced by psychologists, psychiatrists, and medical doctors. Across all ages—from children to adults and the elderly—patients are finding professional, therapeutic hypnosis can help them recover from mental maladies ranging from addiction to depression and psychosis, and from physical illnesses from chronic pain to obesity and skin disorders. Studies show hypnosis can even speed healing from broken bones, burns, and surgery. These unprecedented volumes, including some of the best-known experts in the field hailing from Harvard, Stanford and other top universities, cover the newest research and practice in this intriguing arena. Edited by a psychologist at Harvard Medical School, this set explains developments in hypnosis, from its colorful if misguided inception with Anton Mesmer, across clinical techniques developed for health care in the 20th century, to emerging research showing new potential applications to aide mental and physical health. Chapters also highlight what psychologists, neurologists, physicians, and scientists have discovered about how personality, cognition, and brain functions affect, and are affected by, hypnosis. An appendix explains how to tell the difference between an entertainer or charlatan and a practitioner who is trained, credentialed, and practicing research-backed hypnosis. Universities with hypnotherapy programs and courses are also included.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from War Neuroses The account of the neuroses of war set forth in this book was written primarily for the instruction of the medical profession in America. Dr MacCurdy came to this country in 1917 to inquire into the nature of the problems which were about to confront the neurologists and psychiatrists of America through the participation of that country in the war. The experience he gained was originally recorded in the "Psychiatric Bulletin" of the New York State Hospitals in July, 1917, and the Cambridge University Press are greatly indebted to the editors of this journal for their permission to make Dr MacCurdy's work accessible to the public in another form. The book describes the experience of one with a long record of skilful investigation of the psycho-neuroses of civil life when brought into contact in British hospitals with the special forms of neurosis which are produced by the shocks and strains of warfare. The cases on which the book is based are not startling rarities especially selected to show features of scientific interest, but are characteristic straightforward cases such as may be met with by the score in any hospital especially devoted to functional nervous disorders. The merit of the book lies, not in the nature of its material, but in the skill with which this material has been treated and the clearness with which the essential facts have been set down and utilized to illustrate the special problems presented by the neuroses of war. The great frequency o functional nervous disorders in the present war has made a subject which was formerly a somewhat narrow specialist one with which every practitioner of medicine has been forced to become familiar. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No one is immune to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), which is the modern-day term for what has, at various times, been called 'shell shock', 'war neurosis' and 'combat fatigue' in wartime situations, and 'operational stress injury' in civilian terms. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is a serious, potentially debilitating condition that can occur in people who have experienced or witnessed a natural disaster; serious incident or accident; a sudden death; personal violence or another life-threatening situation. Military personnel and first responders are known to be particularly at risk from PTSD. Everybody has their breaking point, however strong they may have forced or trained themselves to be - physically or mentally. Ironically, it is often the people who have faced other distressing situations in their life, who are most at risk for developing PTSD. However there is a fast and effective way to get to the bottom of the causes of PTSD, with or without a diagnosis, and relieve or even eliminate the most troublesome symptoms, and that is clinical hypnotherapy. This 'alternative' therapy is the only clinically proven therapeutic tool endorsed by the American Medical Association, the American Psychological Association, and the British Medical Council. Clinical hypnotherapy allows a person to delve into the recesses of their own subconscious mind to seek the root source of any issue, and allow the mind to confront symptoms and causes at a pace the subconscious can allow. Hypnosis is so effective as a therapy for PTSD, that it was being used extensively by psychiatrists and psychologists in the Great Wars, to treat the most chronic cases of war neuroses. They called it 'the original brief therapy' because in a relatively small number of sessions of hypnotherapy, the PTSD sufferer and his or her clinical hypnotherapist were able to identify the stressors, past and present, causing the debilitating emotional and/or physical symptoms, and stop them in their tracks, without the need for strong drugs or months and months of talk therapy. Ten percent of all American troops who deployed to Europe returned as 'psychiatric casualties'.That figure mirrors the Canadian statistic of how many of its troops were severely affected by their service in Afghanistan. Canada is now facing a PTSD epidemic. Montreal-based clinical hypnotherapist Pierre Benoit, RCCH, is a renowned international expert in the application of clinical hypnotherapy techniques to reduce or even eliminate PTSD symptoms. His groundbreaking 'PTSD protocol' has helped hundreds of people reclaim their lives from the scourges of PTSD. In this book he explains the techniques he uses to help PTSD sufferers and why clinical hypnotherapy is so effective as a solution to PTSD.

Wolberg’s "Medical Hypnosis", being a comprehensive exposition on the principles of hypnotherapy. This book is the result of experimental work with hypnosis in the treatment of various emotional difficulties, and attempts to delineate the utilities and limitations, as well as advantages and disadvantages, of hypnotherapy. "Medical Hypnosis – The Principles of Hypnotherapy" is highly recommended for those with an interest in the practical applications of hypnosis, and it would make for a worthy addition to collections of allied literature. The chapters of this book include: “The Nature of Hypnosis”, “Pathological Theories”, “Psychologic Theories”, “The Technique of Hypnosis”, “Susceptibility to Hypnosis”, “Suggestibility Tests”, “ The Depth of Trance”, “The First Hypnotic Session”, etcetera. Many antiquarian books such as this are increasingly hard to come by and expensive, and it is with this in mind that we are republishing this book now in an affordable, modern, high quality edition. It comes complete with a specially commissioned new introduction on hypnosis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hypnosis in the Management of Sleep Disorders combines history and medical science to show that the use of hypnosis and hypnotic techniques is effective in the treatment of sleep disorders -- and that this is increasingly validated through modern tools (computers, fMRI images). Dr. Kohler and Kurz show readers that hypnosis and hypnotic techniques are not to be feared or avoided, but that their use can contribute to effective, non-intrusive, and cost-effective approaches to the treatment of sleep problems. This volume is a much needed reference for therapists and their patients alike on how hypnosis can be helpful in the treatment of certain sleep disorders.
