Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental and computational investigation of supersonic combustion flows is in progress. The principal objective of the research is to gain a more fundamental understanding of mixing and chemical reaction in supersonic flows. The research effort comprises three inter-related elements: 1) an experimental study of mixing and combustion in a supersonic plane mixing layer; 2) development of laser-induced fluorescence techniques for time-resolved two-dimensional imaging of species concentration, temperature, velocity and pressure; and, 3) numerical simulations of compressible reacting flows. The design of the supersonic plane mixing layer was completed and the high-pressure gas storage system was installed. The pulsed lasers and camera systems, to be used for two-dimension flow field imaging, were installed and initial performance evaluations are in progress. This work has focussed on development of appropriate numerical methods for performing full-turbulence simulations of high-speed compressible flows and on the application of these methods to temporally and spatially developing compressible mixing layers. The effort to date has identified several promising numerical methods for compressible flow problems. In addition, a code was developed for compressible mixing layers, and initial simulation using this code shows interesting features, such as imbedded shock waves, in high-speed mixing layers. Keywords: Turbulent reacting flow, Laser diagnostics, Computational fluid dynamics.

Book excerpt: Turbulent reactive flows are of common occurrance in combustion engineering, chemical reactor technology and various types of engines producing power and thrust utilizing chemical and nuclear fuels. Pollutant formation and dispersion in the atmospheric environment and in rivers, lakes and ocean also involve interactions between turbulence, chemical reactivity and heat and mass transfer processes. Considerable advances have occurred over the past twenty years in the understanding, analysis, measurement, prediction and control of turbulent reactive flows. Two main contributors to such advances are improvements in instrumentation and spectacular growth in computation: hardware, sciences and skills and data processing software, each leading to developments in others. Turbulence presents several features that are situation-specific. Both for that reason and a number of others, it is yet difficult to visualize a so-called solution of the turbulence problem or even a generalized approach to the problem. It appears that recognition of patterns and structures in turbulent flow and their study based on considerations of stability, interactions, chaos and fractal character may be opening up an avenue of research that may be leading to a generalized approach to classification and analysis and, possibly, prediction of specific processes in the flowfield. Predictions for engineering use, on the other hand, can be foreseen for sometime to come to depend upon modeling of selected features of turbulence at various levels of sophistication dictated by perceived need and available capability.

Book excerpt: The design and off-design studies of the hypersonic air-breathing engines face many challenges, due to the complexity of their internal flows. The mixing and combustion processes in Supersonic-Combustion Ramjet (scramjet) engines involve complicated aerothermochemical features, such as: the interactions between shock-waves and boundary-layer, the shock induced-combustion and the recirculation zones. In this study, a numerical solver is developed and validated to be an efficient design tool capable of simulating these complicated flow features of the supersonic combustors. For the code validation, several test cases are considered to monitor the code ability to solve for the diffusive and turbulent fluxes, and the chemical source term. In addition, the code is validated by resolving the transverse sonic injection into supersonic air flow in the case of Helium injection from a flat plate, and in the case of Hydrogen injection in a single-strut scramjet engine. The effectiveness of this injection technique in mixing and flame-holding is demonstrated. The results show good agreement with the previous numerical and experimental investigations, and prove the simulator's accuracy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The renewed interest in high-speed propulsion has led to increased activity in the development of the supersonic combustion ramjet engine for hypersonic flight applications. In the hypersonic regime the scramjet engine's specific thrust exceeds that of other propulsion systems. This book, written by a leading researcher, describes the processes and characteristics of the scramjet engine in a unified manner, reviewing both theoretical and experimental research. The focus is on the phenomena that dictate the thermo-aerodynamic processes encountered in the scramjet engine, including component analyses and flowpath considerations; fundamental theoretical topics related to internal flow with chemical reactions and non-equilibrium effects, high-temperature gas dynamics, and hypersonic effects are included. Cycle and component analyses are further described, followed by flowpath examination. Finally, the book reviews experimental and theoretical capabilities and describes ground testing facilities and computational fluid dynamics facilities developed for the study of time-accurate, high-temperature aerodynamics.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Workshop on Com bustion, sponsored by the Institute for Computer Applications in Science and Engineering (ICASE) and the NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC). It was held on October 12-14, 1992, and was the sec ond workshop in the series on the subject. The first was held in 1989, and its proceedings were published by Springer-Verlag under the title "Major Research Topics in Combustion," edited by M. Y. Hussaini, A. Kumar, and R. G. Voigt. The focus of the second workshop was directed towards the development, analysis, and application of basic models in high speed propulsion of particular interest to NASA. The exploration of a dual approach combining asymptotic and numerical methods for the analysis of the models was particularly encouraged. The objectives of this workshop were i) the genesis of models that would capture or reflect the basic pllysical phenomena in SCRAMJETs and/or oblique detonation-wave engines (ODWE), and ii) the stimulation of a greater interaction between NASA exper imental research community and the academic community. The lead paper by D. Bushnell on the status and issues of high speed propulsion relevant to both the SCRAMJET and the ODWE parallels his keynote address which set the stage of the workshop. Following the lead paper were five technical sessions with titles and chairs: Experiments (C. Rogers), Reacting Free Shear Layers (C. E. Grosch), Detonations (A. K. Kapila), Ignition and Struc ture (J. Buckmaster), and Unsteady Behaviour ('1'. L. Jackson).
