Book excerpt: Sent to crush space pirates from the inside, he’s in his element. Now he faces betrayals beyond imagination with control of hyperspace at stake. Pavan Khadorov has tired of treachery and death. He's on his final mission for the Galactic Syndicate Security Service, infiltrating space pirates. A loaded drink and misplaced trust land him on a new ship, the Ravager. Pavan allies with the alluring pirate Dellatrix Devdan to get the trust of her shipmates. But Dellatrix is not all that trustworthy herself, especially when treasure is at stake. And treasure there is—a secret weapon that can control hyperspace. When Pavan and Dellatrix discover the secret is a village of children that can form a collective Mind, they hit a snag. As pirate treasure goes, children are hard to manage, especially on the pirate world of Khonoë with few rules and fewer trustworthy allies. Pavan falls back on romance to get Dellatrix on his side. When Pavan gets Dellatrix to double-cross the Captain of the Ravager, they face a slow and certain death if their secrets unravel. And Pavan’s wife won’t help with that. As crisis engulfs Khonoë, Pavan, Dellatrix, and the kids need a miracle to make it off the planet alive. The Ravager descends into mutiny and chaos. Pavan must use all his black-ops experience to find a path through the maze of deceit and death. He has to discover who is his friend—and who is not.

Colonel Chazz Silver, Chief of Staff of the Army National Guard, has always been a soldier's soldier. Decorated war hero. Respected leader. Loyal to a fault. But when she uncovers a plot to tear California away from the United States, she realizes that the greatest threat to her country comes from within. As tanks roll through Sacramento and Manzanar reopens, Chazz finds herself caught in a web of betrayal that stretches from the governor's office to the highest echelons of the military. Her lover, Tom Peña, stands at the center of the storm – but is he a co-conspirator or just another pawn? With time running out and the fate of millions hanging in the balance, Chazz must navigate a minefield of loyalty and deception, becoming a fugitive and forming an unlikely alliance with an Air Guard sergeant, a cartel boss's sister, and a Marine colonel. Racing against time, she traverses the sun-baked Central Valley to the snow-capped peaks of the Sierra Nevada, each step bringing her closer to the truth – and further from everything she once believed in. But as the lines between friend and foe blur, Chazz faces an impossible choice: fulfill her oath to the Constitution or save the man she once loved. Death of a Golden State is a gripping tale of loyalty, betrayal, and the high cost of doing the right thing. It's a stark reminder that in times of crisis, the most dangerous enemies are often the ones we never see coming. In a state where the golden dream has turned to ashes, her fight could change the nation's future. Will Chazz's last-ditch resistance be enough to keep the bear on the California Republic’s flag from devouring the nation? Or will her fight for justice spark a conflagration that consumes them all? Instead of dreams turning to gold, Chazz Silver is about to discover that nightmares can become all too real.

Book excerpt: In a very different San Francisco, a detective and her chef partner follow the money amidst gangsters and temple priests dead set against them finding it. Cheryl MacIntyre aids her friend Henutsenu when the Temple of Bastet arrests her for sacrilegious murder. But in Menmenet, the temples outrank the cops. The frustrated MacIntyre puts her own life in danger as she recklessly dives into the middle of a gang war between the local Aztec mob and encroaching Russian mafias from Russkaya Amerika. Shesmu wins the Best New Chef award from the Menmenet R’ames Society. When he tries to collect his award check, he discovers a vast swindle. The con sucks in an old family friend, and Shesmu seeks to help. Then Henet Baket revenue agents step in to accuse Shesmu himself of tax evasion and money laundering. The two cases merge as MacIntyre and Shesmu follow the money. Then things turn dire. Russian gangsters bomb Shesmu’s restaurant. An Aztec crime lord insists MacIntyre help him fend off encroachment by mafias from Russkaya Amerika. Then the Temple of Bastet threatens to execute Henutsenu. Staying out of jail shifts to survival when gangsters, money-laundering tycoons, and corrupt police stage attacks on the pair to obstruct their pursuit of ma’at. The second novel in the Menmenet trilogy of alternate history mysteries, The Lion of Bastet tells a story of corruption and murder in Menmenet, the capital city of the Ta’an-Imenty Republic, a country on the West Coast of North America colonized by the Egyptian Empire in the 18th century.

Cheryl MacIntyre, an American expatriate, thinks her boss on the Menmenet homicide squad is missing the obvious in the celebrity chef murder—his wife Neferaset did it. After investigating, she’s sure, but she’s forced off the case. When she continues pressing the wealthy Neferaset, she’s ousted from her job with the medjau. Shesmu za-Akhen, a dynamic young chef on the rise, has betrayed his murdered mentor by sleeping with Neferaset. He knows she didn’t murder her husband, but he can’t prove it. When the medjau question her, Neferaset ends the affair but won’t say why. Shesmu and MacIntyre both pursue ma’at but strike sparks over Neferaset. The flames ignite an attraction between the two, but the murder and Neferaset get in the way. When MacIntyre discovers Neferaset’s secret life at the Temple of Seteh, a banned god, tensions mount, driving MacIntyre and Shesmu even further apart. Tomb robbery, murderous attacks, and ancient treasure force them into worlds that threaten not just their love but their careers, their lives, and even their souls. The first novel in the Menmenet trilogy of alternate history mysteries, The Jackal of Inpu tells the story of how a lonely American transplant and a dynamic young Remetjy chef find love in an exotic city full of fog, mystery, and romance despite the many obstacles in their path. Menmenet is the capital city of the Ta’an-Imenty Republic, a country on the West Coast of North America colonized by the Egyptian Empire in the 18th century. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ancient gods and modern armies clash in a riveting alternative-history thriller. Cheryl MacIntyre loves her work on the Menmenet homicide squad. Then she’s fired—for being American. When she plunges into Ta’an-Imenty politics to get her job back, she finds only an endless well of corruption. Shesmu za-Akhen, her lover, can’t help her because he gets a frantic call from the mountains of Washeshu, the small country to the east—his foster father has vanished. The quest to find him takes Shesmu deep into a world of indigenous spirituality that compels him to confront his personal demons. Tahefnu, a young Miwuk woman, lives in an idyllic mountain valley south of Washeshu but questions her future. She undertakes to guide Shesmu in his search for his Coyote-spirit father but loses her own Hummingbird spirit when she confronts the Remetjy gods. When a Spetsnaz team from Russkaya Amerika captures the pair, Shesmu must abandon his quest to save Tahefnu’s life and his own. Furious at Shesmu for deserting her in her time of trial, MacIntyre goes it alone at the Temple of Mentju while Shesmu and Tahefnu hike through the valley of the dead. As MacIntyre rises through the ranks of Mentju, she uncovers a shadowy plot at the highest levels of the state. NATO countries to the east plan to invade the republic with the help of the plotters. Discovered, she flees for her life and joins the Remetjy Republican Guard in the mountains to fight for her adopted country. MacIntyre, Shesmu, and Tahefnu join forces. But with a powerful army poised to invade and the gods against them, their future looks bleak—and short—unless they can get the gods on their side. Set in a North America divided between the North American Treaty Organization of the United States, Numunuu, and the Plains Federation and the Ta’an-Imenty Republic colonized by the Egyptians, the third novel in the Menmenet trilogy of alternate history thrillers confronts MacIntyre and Shesmu with political conspiracy, war, genocide, and their own demons in a world dominated as much by the gods as by men.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Murder, money, mystery, and metaphysics come together in a collection of riveting alternative-history thrillers. The Menmenet mysteries take place in a very different San Francisco colonized by the Egyptian Empire. A city of fog, temples, and mystery, Menmenet and the country of which it is the capital, the Ta'an-Imenty Republic, sit in an uneasy tension with the First Peoples' nations and the United States to the East. They get along well enough with the Aztec Republic to the south, but the Russians from Russkaya Amerika to the north are a constant source of trouble. Shesmu za-Akhen is a celebrity chef in Menmenet. Hutyt-er-Semetyu Cheryl MacIntyre is an emigrant from Boston in the United States trying to make her way in the homicide squad of the Menmenet medjau, the enforcers of ma'at. The trilogy of novels in the Menmenet Series tells their story. The Jackal of Inpu tells the story of how Shesmu and MacIntyre met, a romantic mystery full of murder and misplaced religiosity. In the second novel, The Lion of Bastet, the lovers follow the money amidst Aztec and Russian gangsters and temple priests dead set against them. The novel combines romance, police procedure, and religious conflict in a murder mystery that comes to a stunning conclusion. The third novel, The Bull of Mentju, takes Shesmu and MacIntyre far out of their comfort zones. Shesmu confronts the mystery of his missing father in the high mountains to the east, encountering First Peoples shamans and their gods, while MacIntyre confronts a more prosaic problem: the United States is mounting a secret attempt to take over the small country with genocidal intent. Ancient gods and modern armies clash in this military and political thriller. Enjoy all three novels in this box set of alternate history mysteries.

Book excerpt: i’ve got peter gabriel’s “I Don’t Remember” going thru my head this morning . . . and most of yesturday, and the day before. it seems important to some part of my soul which sits with signs and applause everytime it goes thru my head. they like the drive of the artist’s expression of frustration and anxiety which comes thru in a manic crazyness. the song is an example of something that flashes us spiritually . . . maybe unlike a man in a trenchcoat . . . wearing shorts with a tee-shirt . . . flashing us briefly (ow!) as we walk by. the words “believe in god” embelished on his shirt echo on the canvas of the imagination. it doesn’t matter if we turn around, run after him and chide him in his actions. it doesn’t matter if by doing this it puts him in the same alagory as a pervert . . . and by action, god as well. ultimately tho, the tired, worn out god, quietly sitting in a courner, desperatly trying to believe in himself . . . probably wondering how valid this whole soap opera is, and whether or not spiritual flashers help or hurt his cause. now i got one of the songs from “the last temptation of christ” going thru my head . . . soundtrack ala peter gabriel as well. another spiritual flasher . . . who, jesus or peter gabriel? both an arrow pointing at a path to be walked . . . or a voice to listen to . . . or a feeling to behold. the hardest part is opening your heart up to the option. the option to be open. ( . . . maybe it’s god that’s trying to get into a working relationship with us and it’s us that flinch and put it back up on a pedistal.) . . . why pursue it then? the path. you might accidently get superpowers or something . . . start levitating, healing the sick, curing the blind. become an issue . . . to be delt with by turkeys that can’t fly. walk around, wonder when thanksgiving is. wonder if you look like a turkey. if you are a turkey walking around with turkeys talking turkey talk about how great it is to be a turkey . . . waiting for other turkeys to come over and watch turkey friends on turkey tv. and each turkey has the same turkey right to talk turkey to any turkey it wants in a frantic pace with a frantic face . . . then it’s a good turkey day to be a turkey. gobble it up the daily rut. question your life avoid the knife. be not a turkey entwined behind the line of commonality to turkey HQ. after awhile, you fall into the style. you are accepted, people talk to you. and you find flaws in the turkey tune.

Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE AWARD FOR NONFICTION • An acclaimed journalist sets a new standard for bold, in-depth reporting in this first-hand account of life inside the penal system at Sing Sing. “Newjack is about as good as it gets—by turns gripping, funny, frightening, and sad.” —The Washington Post Book World When Ted Conover’s request to shadow a recruit at the New York State Corrections Officer Academy was denied, he decided to apply for a job as a prison officer himself. The result is an unprecedented work of eyewitness journalism: the account of Conover's year-long passage into storied Sing Sing prison as a rookie guard, or "newjack." As he struggles to become a good officer, Conover angers inmates, dodges blows, and attempts, in the face of overwhelming odds, to balance decency with toughness. Through his insights into the harsh culture of prison, the grueling and demeaning working conditions of the officers, and the unexpected ways the job encroaches on his own family life, we begin to see how our burgeoning prison system brutalizes everyone connected with it. An intimate portrait of a world few readers have ever experienced, Newjack is a haunting journey into a dark undercurrent of American life.
