This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals with the interaction between moments of excited or radioactive nuclei and electromagnetic fields. The experimental techniques developed for the observation of this hyperfine interaction are governed by the lifetime of the nuc lear states in question. The dynamics of the interaction are reflected by the time dependence of the spatial distribution of the radioactive decay radiation. Basically, the experiments yield information on the energy shifts and/or splittings of the nuc lear levels. These quantities are determined essentially by the product of the nuc lear moment and the electromagnetic field acting at the site of the nucleus. Due to the strong decrease in the fields with distance, the measurements probe these fields within a highly localized region centered around the radioactive nuclei. Detailed experimental methods with numerous ramifications were developed in the early sixties. In the period which followed, the main emphasis was on excitation of short-lived nuclear states by means of pulsed particle accelerators, implantation of radioactive nuclei, and production of polarized a-unstable nuclei by nuclear re actions with polarized neutrons or particles. The seventies were a period of fruit ful applications directed to extensive studies of the moments of excited nuclear states on the one hand, and local internal fields on the other, resulting in far reaching information on atomic and solid-state properties. The organization of this Topics volume follows these main lines of research.

Book Synopsis Introduction to Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging by : Richard B. Buxton
Download or read book Introduction to Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging written by Richard B. Buxton and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-08-27 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) has become a standard tool for mapping the working brain's activation patterns, both in health and in disease. It is an interdisciplinary field and crosses the borders of neuroscience, psychology, psychiatry, radiology, mathematics, physics and engineering. Developments in techniques, procedures and our understanding of this field are expanding rapidly. In this second edition of Introduction to Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Richard Buxton – a leading authority on fMRI – provides an invaluable guide to how fMRI works, from introducing the basic ideas and principles to the underlying physics and physiology. He covers the relationship between fMRI and other imaging techniques and includes a guide to the statistical analysis of fMRI data. This book will be useful both to the experienced radiographer, and the clinician or researcher with no previous knowledge of the technology.

Book Synopsis Site Characterization and Aggregation of Implanted Atoms in Materials by : A. Perez
Download or read book Site Characterization and Aggregation of Implanted Atoms in Materials written by A. Perez and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explosive developments in microelectronics, interest in nuclear metallurgy, and widespread applications in surface science have all produced many advances in the field of ion implantation. The research activity has become so intensive and so broad that the field has become divided into many specialized subfields. An Advanced Study Institute, covering the basic and common phenomena of aggregation, seems opportune for initiating interested scientists and engineers into these various active subfields since aggregation usually follows ion implantation. As a consequence, Drs. Perez, Coussement, Marest, Cachard and I submitted such a pro posal to the Scientific Affairs Division of NATO, the approval of which resulted in the present volume. For the physicist studying nuclear hyperfine interactions, the consequences of aggregation of implanted atoms, even at low doses, need to be taken into account if the results are to be correctly interpreted. For materials scientists and device engineers, under standing aggregation mechanisms and methods of control is clearly essential in the tailoring of the end products.
Book Synopsis X-Ray Spectroscopy with Synchrotron Radiation by : Stephen P. Cramer
Download or read book X-Ray Spectroscopy with Synchrotron Radiation written by Stephen P. Cramer and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-19 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Synchrotron radiation has been a revolutionary and invaluable research tool for a wide range of scientists, including chemists, biologists, physicists, materials scientists, geophysicists. It has also found multidisciplinary applications with problems ranging from archeology through cultural heritage to paleontology. The subject of this book is x-ray spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation, and the target audience is both current and potential users of synchrotron facilities. The first half of the book introduces readers to the fundamentals of storage ring operations, the qualities of the synchrotron radiation produced, the x-ray optics required to transport this radiation, and the detectors used for measurements. The second half of the book describes the important spectroscopic techniques that use synchrotron x-rays, including chapters on x-ray absorption, x-ray fluorescence, resonant and non-resonant inelastic x-ray scattering, nuclear spectroscopies, and x-ray photoemission. A final chapter surveys the exciting developments of free electron laser sources, which promise a second revolution in x-ray science. Thanks to the detailed descriptions in the book, prospective users will be able to quickly begin working with these techniques. Experienced users will find useful summaries, key equations, and exhaustive references to key papers in the field, as well as outlines of the historical developments in the field. Along with plentiful illustrations, this work includes access to supplemental Mathematica notebooks, which can be used for some of the more complex calculations and as a teaching aid. This book should appeal to graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and senior scientists alike.
Book Synopsis Ion Beams in Nanoscience and Technology by : Ragnar Hellborg
Download or read book Ion Beams in Nanoscience and Technology written by Ragnar Hellborg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-11-09 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Energetic ion beam irradiation is the basis of a wide plethora of powerful research- and fabrication-techniques for materials characterisation and processing on a nanometre scale. Materials with tailored optical, magnetic and electrical properties can be fabricated by synthesis of nanocrystals by ion implantation, focused ion beams can be used to machine away and deposit material on a scale of nanometres and the scattering of energetic ions is a unique and quantitative tool for process development in high speed electronics and 3-D nanostructures with extreme aspect radios for tissue engineering and nano-fluidics lab-on-a-chip may be machined using proton beams. This book will benefit practitioners, researchers and graduate students working in the field of ion beams and application and more generally everyone concerned with the broad field of nanoscience and technology.
