Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hymns of the Church Universal Besides the many well-known tunes by Barnby, there are about twenty by him that have been reprinted very little, if at all, and that are associated with no especial names; these have been numbered for convenience, and have been also given names, for the purpose of easier identification. No alterations have been made in either melody or harmony; but it often was found out of the question to obtain the origi nal form in which tunes were written, as so many of them have been tampered with in the course of time. In such cases the attempt was made to get as near to the original as possible, and at any rate to have the harmonization correct. Three tunes had to be changed (though not in melody or harmony) to fit the hymns; they are Peace, by Elvey, Amsterdam (hymns 315 and and Mary Magdalene, by Dykes. One thing, however, has been done, which it is hoped will be justified by the result, - the transposition of a large number of tunes to a lower key, to fit them better for congregational singing. There are many in common use that lie too high for average voices, at least for unison singing. To take two instances, Amsterdam and Bethany become comfortable, instead of almost impossible for congregational use, by lowering their pitch a tone. Many organists habitually transpose such tunes in prac tice, and it seemed better to print them in that manner. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methodist Free Church Hymns Not less earnestly has the Committee endeavoured, in the inclusion of new hymns, to provide for the glad and grateful expression of praise. It is still, it will always be 'a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord.' In all ages praise has been the universal lan guage of the children of God, and He reveals Himself in response, when they draw nigh to Him with songs of thanksgiving. Thus, at the dedication of the temple, when they lifted up their voices, the glory of the Lord filled the House of God and the great multitude which no man can number, ' with 'the voice of many waters, ' sing the new song unto Him that sitteth upon the throne, and to the Lamb for ever and ever.' The compilers have also striven, by the choice of suitable hymns, and through the classification and arrangement of the whole book, to stimulate the manifestation of practical Christianity, and to supply a medium for the devout utterance of the varied emotions and experiences of the Christian life. Many hymns are comprised, that, to those who are afflicted, and to those in suffering and sorrow, will be full of consolation, and will be welcome as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land.' Book Synopsis Hymns Historically Famous (Classic Reprint) by : Nicholas Smith
Download or read book Hymns Historically Famous (Classic Reprint) written by Nicholas Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hymns Historically Famous The purpose of this volume is twofold: To in epire a warmer love of Church song; and to make the reader better acquainted with that class of hymns which are noted for the history they have made. The special aim has been to take the more popular and useful of our familiar compositions and give a fuller and more connected story of the lives of the authors, the origin of the hymns, with incidents of interest and value illustrating their influence, than have yet appeared in any annotated hymnal either in America or Great Britain. Twenty-three chapters are devoted to Church hymns and gospel songs which have two common characteristics universal popularity, and the power to make spiritual history. Many hymns are historic solely because their origin is closely related to some striking event, or associated with some hallowed experience; and the rule governing the scope of the book has been re laxed that a few of those having particular merit, might be annotated. The chapter - Five Lay Hymn Writers - was inserted for two important reasons First, the position those consecrated laymen occupy in Church hymnody in all English-speaking coun tries, is unique; and, second, the hymns selected from their writings and printed in these pages, are of great poetic beauty, and add much to the pleasure and profitof public worship. There are many favorite hymns which are perfect in form, exquisite in thought and expression, and which no doubt interpret charming Christian experiences, but not being connected with noteworthy historical facts, they could not properly find a place in this volume. Download or read book The Best Church Hymns (Classic Reprint) written by Louis Fitzgerald Benson and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-13 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Best Church Hymns This little book had its origin in two papers prepared at the request of the editor of The Sunday School Times, and printed in that journal in the autumn of 1897. They are now, by his courteous permission, substantially reproduced here. As there recorded, the collation covered ninety-eight hymn-books, and is now brought down to cover nine more not then at hand or since published. It is interesting to note that this enlargement of the material effected no change in the list of the best hymns, except in some cases a change in their relative order, and the addition of one more hymn to their fellowship. But the better part of the book is the hymns themselves. As far as practicable they are printed as their authors wrote them; such accepted alterations as it seemed necessary to adopt being referred to in the notes. It is well known that books on a similar plan have already come into general use in other denominations, and have been found to be of great advantage in increasing the interest of public worship; and a desire for a hymn and tune book expressly adapted to our wants and tastes has been growing more and more urgent. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons on Hymns for the Church Seasons I have avoided, as far as possible, the choice of hymns for comment which others have made the subjects of sermons; hence some famous hymns are omitted. But all the hymns are well known, and illustrate the doctrines of the seasons for which they are appointed. I desire to ask the kind consideration of any whose thoughts are embodied in this book, if I have inadvertently failed to acknowledge my debt. SO many biographies and books of reference have been consulted that I must have overlooked the origin of some paragraphs.
