Book excerpt: Effects of moisture absorption on the mechanical behavior of glass-reinforced polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) composites were examined. At 100°C and 95% relative humidity, significant moisture absorption into PPS composites took place within a period of one or two weeks. Large reduction in tensile strengths from 25 to 46% were observed. This reduction is significantly increased up to 60% if the thermoplastic material is not properly crystallized.

Book excerpt: This literature review paper was prepared for the Department of Energy Automotive Lightweighting Program to address materials interest expressed by the Automotive Composites Consortium and it summarizes the measurement and development of crystallinity and its relation to properties in poly(phenylene sulfide) (PPS) and its fiber reinforced composites. The objective of this effort was to broaden the understanding of low-cost, semi-crystalline thermoplastic resins and composites for use in potential future automotive applications. PPS has an excellent combination of attributes including good mechanical properties and thermal stability, high chemical resistance, low moisture absorption, good weathering resistance, high dimensional stability, low flammability, and excellent processability. Specific areas addressed in this report include: Structure of PPS; Techniques for measuring crystallinity; Crystallinity as a function of prior treatment; Crystallization kinetics and morphology; Effect of variation of crystallinity on properties of PPS and its composites; Environmental stability; Unusual effects of cooling rates and degree of crystallinity on mechanical properties of AS4/PPS composites; Recent PPS laminate data (Ten Cate Advanced Composites); and Recommendations for future research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Constitutive modelling is the mathematical description of how materials respond to various loadings. This is the most intensely researched field within solid mechanics because of its complexity and the importance of accurate constitutive models for practical engineering problems. Topics covered include: Elasticity - Plasticity theory - Creep theory - The nonlinear finite element method - Solution of nonlinear equilibrium equations - Integration of elastoplastic constitutive equations - The thermodynamic framework for constitutive modelling – Thermoplasticity - Uniqueness and discontinuous bifurcations • More comprehensive in scope than competitive titles, with detailed discussion of thermodynamics and numerical methods. • Offers appropriate strategies for numerical solution, illustrated by discussion of specific models. • Demonstrates each topic in a complete and self-contained framework, with extensive referencing.

Book excerpt: The third International Conference on Composite Interfaces (ICCI-III) was held under the auspecies of ASM International, The Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa), The Edison Polymer Innovation Co. (EPIC), Case Western Reserve University, Nippon Glass Fiber Co., Nitto Boseki Co., Office of Naval Reserach (ONR), SAMPE Japan, Teijin Co., Mobay Co., Union Carbide Co., and Vetrotex Sain-Gobain. The underlying philosophy of the conference continues to be the promotion of fundamental understanding of the structure and role of composite interfaces. With the growth of composite interface studies, the research direction naturally changes from characterization and understanding of interfacial structure to controlling this structure. For this reason, the conference was subtitled, "Controlled Interphase Structure." The rather unfamiliar phrase "interphase" is used to emphasize the interfacial region whose properties are different from the bulk. The importance of the interphase to the mechanochemical properties has been rapidly recognized among composite researchers in recent years. The conference incorporated nine sessions. No concurrent sessions were planned because of the strong interest among panicipants and organizers to intennix researchers from different disciplines. Papers presented were redistributed in Pans I throught V. Because of this, both the conference and proceedings are not organized based on the traditional disciplines or materials, but rather around concepts.

This book was released on 1989 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The viscoelastic properties of polyphenylene sulfide resin based carbon fiber-reinforced composites have been examined using torsion, centrosymmetric disk (CSD), and three-point and four-point flexure testing modes. Laminates fabricated with carbon fabric and a quasi-isotropic layup of continuous carbon fiber have been considered. Dynamic mechanical tests have shown that these materials exhibit a glass transition interval (Tg) from 50 to 150°C and a melting transition near 280°C. The storage component of the modulus or stiffness decreases from room temperature to 175°C by an amount which varies with the imposed stress or strain state. Fiber-dominated modes (three-point and four-point flexure) exhibit a smaller percentage loss in modulus or stiffness than resin-dominated modes (torsion and CSD). Arrhenius plots obtained from frequency sweep data in the glass transition region indicate the fabric-reinforced material and quasi-isotropic layup have activation energies of 130 and 105 kcal, respectively, independent of testing mode. Superposition of frequency/temperature or time/temperature data was achieved in dynamic mechanical and transient (that is, creep and relaxation) tests, respectively. Projection of the ten-year modulus, stiffness, or compliance from transient tests suggests that the response is stress-state dependent with greater change observed for resin-dominated testing modes.
