Book Synopsis Microgravity Two-phase Flow and Heat Transfer by : Kamiel S. Gabriel
Download or read book Microgravity Two-phase Flow and Heat Transfer written by Kamiel S. Gabriel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-05-10 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiphase thermal systems have numerous applications in aerospace, heat-exchange, transport of contaminants in environmental systems, and energy transport and conversion systems. A reduced - or microgravity - environment provides an excellent tool for accurate study of the flow without the masking effects of gravity. This book presents for the first time a comprehensive coverage of all aspects of two-phase flow behaviour in the virtual absence of gravity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Substantial progress has been made in the field of fluid mechanics under compensated gravity effects (microgravity). The main task of this disciplinehas evolved tremendously. Starting out with the aim of providing assistance in describing flow problems in other microgravity sciences, microgravityfluid mechanics has itself now become acknowledge as a powerful means of research. The IUTAM Symposium on Microgravity Fluid Mechanics has pro- vided the long-awaited forum for scientists from 15 coun- tries to discuss and concretize the "state-of-the-art" in this discipline. The main themes treated are: Interface Phe- nomena, Convective Processes; Marangoni effects, Solidifica- tion, Combustion, Physico-Chemical Processes, Multiphase Phenomena, Residual Acceleration effects, Fluid Handling and Non-Newtonian Flows.

Download or read book Materials Processing in High Gravity written by Liya L. Regel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are two motives for studying materials processing in centrifuges. First, such research improves our understanding of the influence of acceleration and convection on materials processing. Second, there are commercial opportunities for production of unique and improved materials that cannot be prepared under normal earth conditions or in space. Through a combination of experiments and theory, we are gaining an understanding of centrifugation on phenomena of importance to materials processing. We find that it is necessary to consider not only acceleration, but also the Corio lis effect and the variation of acceleration with position. As one consequence, the vigor of buoyancy-driven convection is sometimes increased by centrifugation and sometimes decreased. Similarly, the tendency of the convection to become unstable or oscillatory may either be increased or decreased by centrifugation. On the other hand, the observed effects of centrifugation on product quality have largely gone unexplained. This volume constitutes the proceedings of The Second International Workshop on Materials Processing at High Gravity, hosted by Clarkson University in June of 1993. The concept for a workshop on materials processing in centrifuges was born at a series of informal meetings held in Paris in 1990. The First International Workshop on Materials Processing at High Gravity was held in May of 1991 in Dubna, USSR, on the banks of the Volga River. The proceedings of this workshop was published in 1992 as a special issue of the Journal of Crystal Growth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of multiphase flows has grown by leaps and bounds in the last thirty years and is now regarded as a major discipline. Engineering applications, products and processes with particles, bubbles and drops have consistently grown in number and importance. An increasing number of conferences, scientific fora and archived journals are dedicated to the dissemination of information on flow, heat and mass transfer of fluids with particles, bubbles and drops. Numerical computations and "thought experiments" have supplemented most physical experiments and a great deal of the product design and testing processes. The literature on computational fluid dynamics with particles, bubbles and drops has grown at an exponential rate, giving rise to new results, theories and better understanding of the transport processes with particles, bubbles and drops. This book captures and summarizes all these advances in a unified, succinct and pedagogical way. Contents: Fundamental Equations and Characteristics of Particles, Bubbles and Drops; Low Reynolds Number Flows; High Reynolds Number Flows; Non-Spherical Particles, Bubbles and Drops; Effects of Rotation, Shear and Boundaries; Effects of Turbulence; Electro-Kinetic, Thermo-Kinetic and Porosity Effects; Effects of Higher Concentration and Collisions; Molecular and Statistical Modeling; Numerical Methods-CFD. Key Features Summarizes the recent important results in the theory of transport processes of fluids with particles, bubbles and drops Presents the results in a unified and succinct way Contains more than 600 references where an interested reader may find details of the results Makes connections from all theories and results to physical and engineering applications Readership: Researchers, practicing engineers and physicists that deal with any aspects of Multiphase Flows. It will also be of interest to academics and researchers in the general fields of mechanical and chemical engineering.

Book Synopsis Centrifugal Materials Processing by : Liya L. Regel
Download or read book Centrifugal Materials Processing written by Liya L. Regel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is not good to have zeal without knowledge • . . . Book of Proverbs This volume constitutes the proceedings of the Third International Workshop on Materials Processing at High Gravity. It offers the latest results in a new field with immense potential for commercialization, making this book a vital resource for research and development professionals in industry, academia and government. We have titled the proceedings Centrifugal Materials Processing to emphasize that centrifugation causes more than an increase in acceleration. It also introduces the Coriolis force and a gradient of acceleration, both of which have been discovered to play important roles in materials processing. The workshop was held June 2-8, 1996 on the campus of Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York, under the sponsorship of Corning Corporation and the International Center for Gravity Materials Science and Applications. The meeting was very productive and exciting, with energetic discussions of the latest discoveries in centrifugal materials processing, continuing the atmosphere of the first workshop held in 1991 at Dubna (Russia) and the second workshop held in 1993 in Potsdam, New York. Results and research plans were presented for a wide variety of centrifugal materials processing, including directional solidification of semiconductors, crystallization of high Tc superconductors, growth of diamond thin films, welding, alloy casting, solution behavior and growth, protein crystal growth, polymerization, and flow behavior. Also described were several centrifuge facilities that have been constructed for research, with costs beginning at below $1000.
