Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A hydrological model was used to examine the water balance of the Delta Marsh Watershed (DMW) currently and as impacted by land use changes. Understanding DMW hydrology can help to improve conditions in the Delta Marsh. MIKE SHE model results showed that the water balance is typical of prairie conditions with limited wintertime activity, significant spring melt runoff, and high summertime evapotranspiration and infiltration. Results showed that the DMW contributes approximately 40 million m3 of water to the Delta Marsh in an average year, or 710 m3/ha/yr. Portage Creek is the single greatest inflow from the watershed (31% of total) and the West Marsh area also receives large runoff volumes (combined 37% of total). Analysis of land use changes showed that urban expansion in the DMW would increase annual marsh inflows by over 50% under one urbanization scenario due to associated decreases in infiltration and transpiration. An agricultural shift towards row crop predominance would have minimal impact on the DMW water balance. Conversion of cropland to natural vegetation would decrease annual runoff by 12% to the marsh due to increased surface ponding, infiltration, and transpiration.

This book was released on 1975 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Delta Marsh, situated at the south end of Lake Manitoba, is Manitoba's most widely known marsh. Under optimum conditions it can support large and varied waterfowl and wildlife populations. However, periods of low water levels during droughts, and untimely water level fluctuations have seriously hampered the productivity of the Marsh. In the 1940's structures were built including a fixed crest dam at Clandeboye Bay and flap gates on the Delta channel. These were designed to increase low Marsh levels by trapping water driven into the marsh by wind setup on Lake Manitoba. However, many people now feel that the stability of water level brought on by these control structures has in general been detrimental to the Marsh. The water Resources Division was therefore asked to make a hydrologic study of the Delta Marsh examining the proposal involving removal of the existing structures at Clandeboye Bay and Delta channel, and the alternative of replacing the existing structures at these location.
Book Synopsis Spatial Variation of Water Quality and Algal Production, and the Relationship Between Land Use and Nutrient Loading in Delta Marsh by : Madeline Stanley
Download or read book Spatial Variation of Water Quality and Algal Production, and the Relationship Between Land Use and Nutrient Loading in Delta Marsh written by Madeline Stanley and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Delta Marsh is a 19,000-hectare freshwater coastal wetland located on the southern shore of Lake Manitoba, Canada. The ecological integrity of Delta Marsh has been declining due to changes in hydrology, nutrient loading, water quality and the introduction of invasive species. Research on variables influencing this decline is imperative for restoration. The objectives of this research were to determine which chemical and physical variable(s) drive phytoplankton chlorophyll-a concentrations and to determine if there is spatial variation of nutrient loading caused by the land use gradient across the watershed. Environmental variables were analyzed using multivariate statistical analyses and demonstrated that phytoplankton blooms were most influenced by meteorological conditions and nutrient availability. Nutrient exports to Delta Marsh were greater in areas with higher agricultural cover. This research will help inform management plans to restore the ecological function to Delta Marsh and other coastal wetlands, ultimately improving water quality, fisheries and waterfowl habitat.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Water Institute of the Gulf is a not-for-profit, independent research institute dedicated to advancing the understanding of coastal, deltaic, river and water resource systems, both within the Gulf Coast and around the world. Their mission supports the practical application of innovative science and engineering, providing solutions that benefit society. Those who make policy for coastal and deltaic systems, as well as managers of natural resources, need high-quality science and engineering to guide their decisions. The Water Institute of the Gulf began operations in 2012 to address exactly this sort of challenge. Delta Waters offers advice to The Water Institute of the Gulf that it might use as part of its strategic planning process. This report focuses on strategic research to support integrated water resources management in the lower Mississippi River delta and includes international comparative assessments. The recommendations of Delta Waters promote a human and environmental systems approach to scientific research that supports integrated water and environmental resources management in the lower Mississippi River and delta, and offers ideas regarding comparative assessments with other, relevant deltaic regions around the world. This report provides input for research into common deltaic problems and challenges, identifies strategic research for The Water Institute of the Gulf, and suggests ways that the organization can utilize knowledge gained from the lower Mississippi River and delta system in developing a research program to support water management decisions in other large river/delta complexes.
Book Synopsis Vegetation Changes with Falling Water Levels in the Delta Marsh, Manitoba by : Jennifer Mary Walker
Download or read book Vegetation Changes with Falling Water Levels in the Delta Marsh, Manitoba written by Jennifer Mary Walker and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This investigation was planned as a continuation and expansion of the study initiated in 1958 at Delta, Manitoba, to describe the vegetation of a freshwater marsh. At that time water levels in the marsh were falling. The expansion of vegetation on progressively drying areas was described by Walker (1959). In order to determine the effects of prolonged drying on seral succession in the marsh, the need to follow-up the original observations was emphasized. To do this it was necessary to estimate the overall composition of the vegetation and to study variation within the marsh complex. In an area of approximately 15,000 hectares sampling had to be restricted. Criticism has been levelled at the inaccuracy of subjective estimates of cover (e.g, Hope-Simpson,1940; Smith, 1944) and there is no doubt that criticism is valid if conclusions are drawn which are more detailed than the data justify. In this study analytical comparisons have been confined to differences in presence and frequency.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of California's most remarkable wetlands, Suisun Marsh is the largest tidal marsh on the West Coast and a major feature of the San Francisco Estuary. This productive and unique habitat supports endemic species, is a nursery for native fishes, and is a vital link for migratory waterfowl. The 6,000-year-old marsh has been affected by human activity, and humans will continue to have significant impacts on the marsh as the sea level rises and cultural values shift in the century ahead. This study includes in-depth information about the ecological and human history of Suisun Marsh, its abiotic and biotic characteristics, agents of ecological change, and alternative futures facing this ecosystem.
