Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A set of elementary reactions and their corresponding rate coefficients has been assembled to describe the homogeneous H2-O2 reaction system over the temperature range 300-3000 K. The reaction mechanism was drawn together assuming that H2-O2 reactive mixtures could be adequately described in terms of self-consistent, thermal distributions of electronically neutral, ground-state reactants, intermediates and products. The resulting time-dependent ordinary differential equations describing the system were integrated assuming various initial pressures, temperatures and initial concentrations of reactants and diluents. The computed results have been compared with experimentally observed induction times, second explosion limits, the rate of reaction above the second explosion limit and the temporal behavior of reaction species. The good agreement between the computational and experimental results attests to the accuracy of the assembled mechanism in its description of the homogeneous reaction system and supports the validity of the set of associated rate coefficients for the elementary reactions of the mechanism over a broad range of reaction conditions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many propulsion applications for which hydrogen and oxygen are attractive as fuel and oxidizer. These include liquid-propellant rocket motors with high specific impulse, air-breathing ramjets with supersonic combustion and certain types of pulse-detonation engines. Detailed knowledge of the chemical kinetics of combustion of hydrogen and oxygen is needed for rational design of combustors for such applications. Since there are only twenty-some steps in hydrogen-oxygen combustion chemistry, it is possible to ascertain all of the relevant rate parameters for this system much more accurately than for other fuel-oxidizer combinations. Although the relevant rate parameters are now rather well known, there are still some notable uncertainties that deserve further investigation. These include the falloff behavior at high pressures and chaperon efficiencies of various third bodies. More than twenty different mechanisms are currently available in the literature, some quite new. Predictions of these different mechanisms are in good agreement for most processes. There are, however, notable differences in predictions of autoignition induction times near crossover, where the rate of H + O2 -> OH + O equals the rate of H + O2 + M -> HO2 + M. Even certain very recent mechanisms are in poor agreement with experiment in this respect. A mechanism is given here that agrees well with experiment. A very simple mechanism consisting of only six irreversible elementary steps actually provides excellent agreement for autoignition delays over a very wide range of conditions. Simplifications of this type can be useful in computational fluid dynamics of reacting flows and in various practical propulsion calculations.

This book was released on 1961 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiments were conducted on an uncooled 20,000lb-thrust gaseous-H and LOX rocket engine over a range of chamber pressure from 45 to 300 psia and oxidant-fuel ratio from 2 to 7. Combustion dead times were measured and compared with dead times calculated from frequency data for two assumed combustion models. Measured combustion dead time decreased with increasing chamber pressure at constant oxidant-fuel ratio or LOX injection velocity. This dead time also decreased with oxidant-fuel ratio at constant chamber pressure or O injection velocity. For the engine model where combustion dead time was considered to be the inverse of twice the measured chamberpressure frequency, only a fair agreement with the measured dead time was obtained. When the measured chamber-pressure frequencies were corrected for gas-dynamics effects in terms of the gas residence time, close agreement with the measured dead times was obtained. (Author).

Book excerpt: This literature survey digest of hydrogen-air combustion fundamentals presents data on flame temperature, burning velocity, quenching distance, flammability limits, ignition energy, flame stability, detonation, spontaneous ignition, and explosion limits. The data are assessed, recommended values are given, and relations among various combustion properties are discussed. New material presented includes: theoretical treatment of variation in spontaneous ignition lag with temperature, pressure, and composition, based on reaction kinetics of hydrogen-air composition range for 0.01 to 100 atmospheres and initial temperatures of 0 degrees to 1400 degrees k.
