Book excerpt: Due to a lack of proper measurement techniques at elevated temperatures, we approached this study by dividing it into two parts. The first part was aimed at exploring the fluidization behavior of a gas-solid fluidized bed at different levels of IPFs from global and local points of view. The second part focused on the hydrodynamic characterization of a gas-solid fluidized bed at high temperature while different levels of IPFs were deliberately introduced into a bed of otherwise fresh coarse particles. Since the motion of "bubbles" is an important influence on fluidized bed heat transfer, a better understanding of their behavior is necessary for improving the design of fluidized bed boilers. Using a two-dimensional bed, silica sand particles were fluidized with air at room conditions. The bubbling bed was videotaped, and both qualitative and quantitative information were gathered. Bubble characteristics such as size, rise velocity and frequency were studied while particle size and superficial gas velocity were varied. Results were compared with some existing theories and other similar research. The effect of internal surfaces at several heights in the bed was also studied. General bubble behavior agreed well with descriptions from previous research, and the expected spherical-cap bubble shape was observed. Both bubble size and rise velocity increased with particle size and with fluid velocity. Bubble frequency increased with fluid velocity, but decreased with increasing particle size and height in the bed. These results agree with previous work done using optical probes to measure bubble characteristics. Comparisons of data with empirical models showed general agreement. The presence of internal surfaces had the effect of reducing the bubble size, rise velocity, and frequency, and also of reducing the influence of changing particle size and superficial velocity on the bed behavior.

It is very much necessary to have the idea about the particle shape, type of distributor, minimum fluidization velocity, voidage, sphericity of particle etc in order to achieve the proper functioning of fluidized beds. In this present work, hydrodynamic of fluidized bed with regular particles was studied. The hydrodynamic behavior like pressure drop, minimum fluidization velocity accounting with different parameters were determined and they compared with the theoretical value. The present work is been focussed on understanding the hydrodynamic behaviour in a gas-solid two phase fluidized bed. Hematite powder of size 10 micrometer, sand particle ranging from 0.2 mm to 0.73 mm and dolomite particle from 0.03mm to 0.53mm are used as the solid phase. The fluidization operation had been carried out with air as gas phase and the hematite powder, sand and dolomite in the fluidizing cylinder . Superficial velocity of gas has been varied in the range of 0 to 0.8 m/s . The static bed heights of the solid phase in the fluidized bed used are taken from 2cm to 8.5 cm.

This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Slurry bubble columns and gas-solid fluidized bed reactors are some of the most commonly used industrial processes. Considerable interests have been recognized in the field of physical, chemical, petrochemical, electrochemical, and biochemical operations (Fan, 1989). In these reactor systems, large axial dispersion of phases and high flow patterns can be achieved by the excellent macromixing characteristics. It also provides excellent heat and mass transfer without the aid of external mechanisms and relatively easy operation. Despite the advantages of operations, the transport behavior in these systems is very complex and a comprehensive knowledge of the hydrodynamics, heat and mass transfer and mixing are required for successful application of these systems. Some aspects of the fundamental characteristics of evaporative liquid jets in gas-liquid-solid flows are studied and some pertinent literature is reviewed. It is found that the injection of an evaporative liquid jet decreases the minimum fluidization velocity at a high pressure due to the additional gas flow generated from liquid evaporation. Fluidizing gas velocities have no significant effect on the jet penetration length in a dense phase fluidized bed while it reduces the radial dispersed distance of the evaporative liquid. The tomographic images of liquid nitrogen injection in a dense phase fluidized bed indicate a distribution of reduced bubble sizes compared to a dry bed. The hydrodynamics, gas-liquid mass transfer properties and liquid entrainment phenomena in a high pressure and high temperature bubble column is investigated. Effects of pressure on hydrodynamics and mass transfer properties are mainly through the change in gas and liquid physical properties, which in turn changes the bubble dynamics that govern the transport phenomena. Experimental results show that liquid velocities have a direct influence on kl while other factors have a dominant effect on the interfacial area over kl. Liquid entrainment in bubble columns is controlled by the droplet formation during bubble bursting at interface. Effect of pressure on liquid entrainment is to due to the higher drag force exerted on the liquid droplet with higher gas density and the formation of smaller droplet by the smaller bubbles at high pressure.

This book focuses on the design and operation of fluidized beds in many different industrial processes, emphasizing the rationale for choosing fluidized beds for each particular process. The book starts with a brief history of fluidization from its inception in the 1940’s. The authors present both the fluid dynamics of gas-solid fluidized beds and the extensive experimental studies of operating systems and they set them in the context of operating processes that use fluid-bed reactors. Chemical engineering students and postdocs as well as practicing engineers will find great interest in this book.

Book excerpt: Rising gas bubbles in bubbling fluidized beds are important for all hydrodynamics related phenomena, e.g. mass transfer, gas bypassing, heat transfer, gas-solids mixing, etc. However, still many interactions of bubbles with specific operation conditions in fluidized beds are unknown. In this work, fluidized beds with vertical heat exchangers are investigated. Vertical heat exchangers are in this case used to remove the heat of reaction from the exothermal methanation reaction for the production of synthetic natural gas (SNG) from wood. Several vertical tube bank configurations varying in their diameter, tube-to-tube spacing, and arrangement (square vs. triangular) have been immersed into a lab-scale fluidized bed. By means of optical probing and pressure fluctuation measurements, their influence on the rising gas bubbles has been evaluated by means of statistical tools. Findings from these experiments are furthermore used to develop a modified approach to scale up fluidized beds with vertical internals.

Book excerpt: Multiphysics Modelling of Fluid-Particulate Systems provides an explanation of how to model fluid-particulate systems using Eulerian and Lagrangian methods. The computational cost and relative merits of the different methods are compared, with recommendations on where and how to apply them provided. The science underlying the fluid-particulate phenomena involves computational fluid dynamics (for liquids and gases), computational particle dynamics (solids), and mass and heat transfer. In order to simulate these systems, it is essential to model the interactions between phases and the fluids and particles themselves. This book details instructions for several numerical methods of dealing with this complex problem. This book is essential reading for researchers from all backgrounds interested in multiphase flows or fluid-solid modeling, as well as engineers working on related problems in chemical engineering, food science, process engineering, geophysics or metallurgical processing. Provides detailed coverage of Resolved and Unresolved Computational Fluid Dynamics - Discrete Element Method (CFD-DEM), Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics, and their various attributes Gives an excellent summary of a range of simulation techniques and provides numerical examples Starts with a broad introduction to fluid-particulate systems to help readers from a range of disciplines grasp fundamental principles
