Book excerpt: In this work the hydrodynamic behavior of an inverse liquid-solid circulating fluidized bed (ILSCFB) system was studied. In addition, the hydrodynamic characteristic of the inverse liquid-solid fluidization under the conventional fluidization regime was also studied. The system consists of a downer with an inner column diameter of 7.6 cm and a height of 5.4 meters, an upcomer (riser) with an inner column diameter of 20 cm, a separator, and feeding and returning pipes which connect the downer and the upcomer. Based on the axial hydrodynamic behavior of the ILSCFB, it was found that the axial solids holdup in the downer is uniform. Similar to the heavy-particle LSCFB, the circulating fluidization regime in the downer was separated into the two zones including the initial circulating fluidization zone and the fully developed circulating fluidized zone as a function of the total liquid velocity in the downer. The effects of the solids inventory and the counter current flow in the upcomer on the hydrodynamics of the downer were also studied. Afterwards, the radial distribution of particles was studied in the downer of the ILSCFB. Interestingly, the radial structure of the two-phase flow was completely different from the case of the heavy-particle LSCFB. It was found that the solids holdup was greater in the center than near the wall of the downer. Finally, the conventional (non-circulating) inverse liquid-solid fluidization was studied in a column with a large diameter for the first time. The minimum fluidization velocity was obtained experimentally and compared with the Richardson and Zaki model. It was concluded that the Richardson and Zaki model can predict the bed expansion in the case of the inverse liquid-solid fluidization when the terminal velocity was calculated by the model of free rising light particles.

In part, the attention has arisen due to the environmental advantages associated with CFB (circulating . fluidized bed) combustion systems, the incorporation of riser reactors employing cir culating fluidized bed technology in petroleum refineries for fluid catalytic cracking and, to a lesser extent, the successes of CFB technology for calcina tion reactions and Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. In part, it was also the case that too much attention had been devoted to bubbling fluidized beds and it was time to move on to more complex and more advantageous regime,S of operation. Since 1980 a number of CFB processes have been commercialized. There have been five successful International Circulating Fluidized Bed Confer ences beginning in 1985, the most recent taking place in Beijing in May 1996. In addition, we have witnessed a host of other papers on CFB funda mentals and applications in journals and other archival publications. There have also been several review papers and books on specific CFB topics. However, there has been no comprehensive book reviewing the field and attempting to provide an overview of both fundamentals and applications. The purpose of this book is to fill this vacuum.

Book excerpt: The hydrodynamics of three-phase (gas-liquid-solid) fluidized beds has been studied in two columns of 7.62 and 15.2 cm in dia. The minimum gas and liquid velocities necessary to fluidize a bed were determined as a function of the particle size and density and the liquid viscosity; no effect of the initial bed height or column diameter was found. An electroconductivity technique was used to measure local concentrations of solid, liquid, and gas in the fluidized bed; these profiles were fitted using the error function. Overall solid holdup data were combined with over 1350 points from the literature to yield a dimensional correlation involving the physical parameters of the systems studied.

Book excerpt: The hydrodynamics of three-phase (gas-liquid-solid) fluidized beds has been studied in two columns with inside diameters of 7.62 and 15.2 cm respectively. The minimum gas and liquid velocities necessary to fluidize various types of solids were determined and correlated as a function of the particle size and density and the liquid viscosity; no effect of the initial bed height or column diameter was found. Overall phase holdups, or volume fractions, determined from a homogeneous bed model were combined with similar literature data to yield correlations for the overall gas and solid phase holdups. The overall gas holdup increased as the gas velocity was increased, while the overall solid holdup was decreased by increased liquid velocity and was increased by increased particle diameter or solid/liquid density difference. An electroconductivity technique was developed for use in the three-phase fluidized beds which allowed each of the phase holdups to be determined at any point in the column. The technique has shown the existence of a transition region as the bed goes from a three-phase to a two-phase system. The holdup profiles were fitted using the error function, and the mean and standard deviation of the solid holdup profile, along with the gas and solid holdups in the regions where they were constant, were measured for each set of run conditions. Use of these five parameters, which were correlated with the physical pxrameters of the systems studied, permits each of the three phase holdup profiles to be predicted. This gives the reactor designer more information concerning phase distributions than was available previously; thus it will aid in the design of reactors where local conditions throughout the bed must be considered.

Book excerpt: The general purpose of the experimental investigations described here has to study the hydrodynamic properties of gas-liquid fluidized beds. Gas -liquid fluidization of or three-phase fluidization is a chemical engineering operation where all the three phases are brought into contact with each other. This contact is brought about by passing the gas and liquid trough the bed of solids. The solids are said to be in a fluidized state when they are suspended in the continuous phase.Hydrodynamic properties such as gas hold-up, liquid hold-up and bed porosity have been studied. These properties depend upon certain independent variables such as gas flow rates, liquid flow rate, particle size, static bed heights, gas density, liquid density, solid density, liquid surface tension, liquid viscosity, gas viscosity and particle shape. During the course of this experimental investigation only four of these parameters have been varied, viz, gas flow rates, liquid flow rates, static bed height and particle size. The result of these experimental investigations is discussed and correlations have also been developed for the hydrodynamics properties studied.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Slurry bubble columns and gas-solid fluidized bed reactors are some of the most commonly used industrial processes. Considerable interests have been recognized in the field of physical, chemical, petrochemical, electrochemical, and biochemical operations (Fan, 1989). In these reactor systems, large axial dispersion of phases and high flow patterns can be achieved by the excellent macromixing characteristics. It also provides excellent heat and mass transfer without the aid of external mechanisms and relatively easy operation. Despite the advantages of operations, the transport behavior in these systems is very complex and a comprehensive knowledge of the hydrodynamics, heat and mass transfer and mixing are required for successful application of these systems. Some aspects of the fundamental characteristics of evaporative liquid jets in gas-liquid-solid flows are studied and some pertinent literature is reviewed. It is found that the injection of an evaporative liquid jet decreases the minimum fluidization velocity at a high pressure due to the additional gas flow generated from liquid evaporation. Fluidizing gas velocities have no significant effect on the jet penetration length in a dense phase fluidized bed while it reduces the radial dispersed distance of the evaporative liquid. The tomographic images of liquid nitrogen injection in a dense phase fluidized bed indicate a distribution of reduced bubble sizes compared to a dry bed. The hydrodynamics, gas-liquid mass transfer properties and liquid entrainment phenomena in a high pressure and high temperature bubble column is investigated. Effects of pressure on hydrodynamics and mass transfer properties are mainly through the change in gas and liquid physical properties, which in turn changes the bubble dynamics that govern the transport phenomena. Experimental results show that liquid velocities have a direct influence on kl while other factors have a dominant effect on the interfacial area over kl. Liquid entrainment in bubble columns is controlled by the droplet formation during bubble bursting at interface. Effect of pressure on liquid entrainment is to due to the higher drag force exerted on the liquid droplet with higher gas density and the formation of smaller droplet by the smaller bubbles at high pressure.

This book focuses on the design and operation of fluidized beds in many different industrial processes, emphasizing the rationale for choosing fluidized beds for each particular process. The book starts with a brief history of fluidization from its inception in the 1940’s. The authors present both the fluid dynamics of gas-solid fluidized beds and the extensive experimental studies of operating systems and they set them in the context of operating processes that use fluid-bed reactors. Chemical engineering students and postdocs as well as practicing engineers will find great interest in this book.
