Measurements are made for parabolic struts alone, in tandem, and in various combinations with the cylindrical hulls. Interference effects between components are deduced from these data and compared with theoretical predictions. Two SWATH models were tested, both without fins and fully appended while restrained in pitch and heave. Added drag caused by fins required to counter the heave force and trim moment was calculated theoretically.

Book excerpt: Experiments were conducted on a small waterplane area, twin-hull (SWATH) model designated as SWATH 6A to determine the hydrodynamic coefficients associated with the following fin-body combinations: bare hull with forward fin, bare hull with aft fin, and bare hull with forward and aft fins. Three types of experiments were conducted at several speeds: calm-water towing for various fixed drafts and trim angles, forced oscillation in both the pitch and heave modes, and towing in regular head waves. The objective of the investigation was to verify the computational methods used for predicting the motions of a SWATH ship in waves. In general agreement between measured and computed hydrodynamic coefficients confirmed the validity of the computational method used. The study also provided valuable insight for improving both the methods of computing the hydrodynamic coefficients and the method of measuring the forces and moments of SWATH models.

SWATHGEN interfaces with a resistance calculation program, REPOW, and a wave resistance optimization program, OPTVOL, which contours the lower hull to minimize wave resistance. Swathgen produces a complete mathematical description of the hull surface geometry using parametric cubic splines. This description is used to produce plots (Stations, Waterlines and 3-D Views), to calculate hydrostatic properties and to generate a source panel distribution for wave resistance calculations. A device for stretching a membrane uniformly and with repeatable results was designed, built, and successfully employed. The test procedure was selected as a simple means of screening potential drag reducing compliant surfaces as suggested by previous experimental and analytical studies. Nearly 40 different disks were tested in turbulent flow over a Reynolds number range of 1.7 - 3 million. Membrane thickness and tension, as well as substrate thickness, was varied. The membranes were bonded, unbonded, and separated by an air gap with respect to the substrates. The measured drag was compared to that of a corresponding hard reference disk. In most cases, no drag reduction occurred. The few measured drag reductions were within the estimated experimental inaccuracy.

Strip theory is used to evaluate hydrodynamic forces. Contributions due to body lift, cross flow drag, and fin lift dominate the damping coefficients. Consequently, their accurate modeling is vital to the accuracy of motion predictions. Semiempirical methods developed for evaluating these components are described. Data for oscillating two-dimensional cylinders, flat plates, and pairs of fins as well as semiempirical expressions for submarine hydrodynamic coefficients have been utilized in this development. Correlation between predicted and experimental results are presented for hydrodynamic coefficients, exciting force and moment, and responses to regular waves. The expressions developed result in correlation which is good and which is notably better than results reported previously.
