Book excerpt: An investigation was made of the hydrodynamic characteristics of a 1/17-size dynamic model of a 160,000-pound transonic seaplane design having a planing-tail hull with the center of gravity located 2.1 beams aft of the step. Longitudinal stability during smooth-water take-off and landing was satisfactory, and the landing behavior in waves was good. These results were similar to that of a previously tested planing-tail-hull model having the center of gravity slightly aft of the step. The thrust from currently available engines was sufficient to accelerate to take-off in 20 seconds in a distance of 2,530 feet (full-size) with a gross load of 160,000 pounds, and in 34 seconds in a distance of 4,320 feet with a gross load of 200,000 pounds. Spray characteristics were very good in smooth water and in waves.

Book excerpt: N.A.C.A. models 74, 74-A, and 75 were tested in the N.A.C.A. tank to determine their hydrodynamic properties and in the N.A.C.A. 20-foot wind tunnel to determine their aerodynamic properties. The forms of these models were derived from that of a solid of revolution having a lowe air drag, and the departures from the form of this low-drag body were the minimum considered to give satisfactory take-off performance. Model 74 has a rounded bottom with flared chines, a transverse step wit ha small fairing aft of it, and a pointed afterbody. Model 74-A has the same forme except for the removal of the fairing aft of the step. Model 75 has a pointed step and a horizontal afterbody derived from the form of the N.A.C.A. model 35 series.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practical Ship Hydrodynamics, Second Edition, introduces the reader to modern ship hydrodynamics. It describes experimental and numerical methods for ship resistance and propulsion, maneuvering, seakeeping, hydrodynamic aspects of ship vibrations, and hydrodynamic options for fuel efficiency, as well as new developments in computational methods and model testing techniques relating to marine design and development.Organized into six chapters, the book begins with an overview of problems and approaches, including the basics of modeling and full-scale testing, prediction of ship hydrodynamic performance, and viscous flow computations. It proceeds with a discussion of the marine applications of computational fluid dynamics and boundary element methods, factors affecting ship hydrodynamics, and simple design estimates of hydrodynamic quantities such as resistance and wake fraction. Seakeeping of ships is investigated with respect to issues such as maximum speed in a seaway, route optimization (routing), structural design of the ship with respect to loads in seaways, and habitation comfort and safety of people on board. Exercises and solutions, formula derivations, and texts are included to support teaching or self-studies.This book is suitable for marine engineering students in design and hydrodynamics courses, professors teaching a course in general fluid dynamics, practicing marine engineers and naval architects, and consulting marine engineers. Combines otherwise disparate information on the factors affecting ship hydrodynamics into one practical, go-to resource for successful design, development and construction. Updated throughout to cover the developments in computational methods and modeling techniques since the first edition published more than 10 years ago. New chapters on hydrodynamic aspects of ship vibrations and hydrodynamic options for fuel efficiency, and increased coverage of simple design estimates of hydrodynamic quantities such as resistance and wake fraction. Book excerpt: The hydrodynamic characteristics, as determined from model tests of a planing-tail, flying-boat hull that was found to have very low air drag, are described and these characteristics of a comparable conventional type of hull. The planing-tail hull was found to have generally greater take-off stability than the conventional type of hull, as well as having improved landing stability. The hydrodynamic resistance was lower for the planing-tail hul than for the conventional type of hull, and the load-resistance ratio was higher tor the planing-tail hull.

Book excerpt: An investigation of the take-off and landing behavior in waves of models of a hypothetical flying boat having hull length-beam ratios of 6 and 15 has been made. An increase in length-beam ratio from 6 to 15, reduced the maximum vertical accelerations during landing approximately 25 percent, increased the maximum angular accelerations 15 to 30 percent, and reduced the motions of trim and rise as well as the maximum trim and rise. Spray entering the propellers during take-off was acceptable. The take-off behavior with the length-beam ratio of 15 in waves was generally less violent than wit hthe length-beam ratio of 6.

This book was released on 1943 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of related forms of flying-boat hulls representing various degrees of compromise between aerodynamic and hydrodynamic requirements was tested in NACA tank 1 and in the NACA 8-foot high-speed tunnel. The purpose of the investigation was to provide information regarding the penalties in water performance resulting from further aerodynamic refinement and as a corollary, to provide information regarding the penalties in range or pay load resulting from the retention of certain desirable hydrodynamic characteristics. The information should form a basis for over-all improvement in hull form.

This book was released on 1951 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results of an investigation to obtain hydrodynamic information on a series of hull models suitable for small flying boats or amphibians of from 2000 to 5000 pounds gross weight are presented. The series of hulls consisted of a basic hull with simple lines with plus or minus variations to this design in which the beam, sternpost angle, and afterbody length were altered. Modifications were also investigated to determine the advantage of refining the hull lines. The hulls were tested for hydrodynamic resistance and main spray. On the basis of these characteristics, the best beam and sternpost angle were selected for each of the three lengths investigated. The resulting three hulls were further tested for landing and porpoising characteristics.

This book was released on 1948 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation of the hydrodynamic qualities of a hypothetical flying boat with a hll having a length-beam ratio of 15 was made in Langley tank no. 1. The hydrodynamic qualities of importance in practical operation determined in this investigation were the range of position of the center of gravity for take-off, landing stability, spray characteristics, and take-off performance. The results indicate that the hydrodynamic qualities of this low-drag hull are satisfactory and do no differ greatly from those of the related flying boat with the more conventional hull length-beam ratio of 6.

Book excerpt: This report presents the results of systematic model experiments on the hydrodynamic characteristics of flying boats, aimed primarily at developing a comprehensive view of the factors influencing porpoising and of their relative importance. The experiments "radiated" from a given reference ship; they embrace changes, over reasonably wide ranges, in the value of each of a number of variables, treated independently.
