Book excerpt: The Kentucky Geological Survey (KGS) at the University of Kentucky is conducting a 2-year research project funded by the Gas Research Institute (GRI) to study hydrocarbon production from the Devonian shale in eastern Kentucky. Objectives are to develop an understanding of relationships between stratigraphy and hydrocaron production, create a data base, and prepare geologic reports for each county in the study area. Data have been compiled from the KGS, GRI Eastern Gas Data System (EGDS), U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), and industry. Research for Letcher county has been completed and 270 Devonian wells have been entered into the KGS computer data base. Devonian black-shale units have been correlated using gamma-ray logs. Structure and isopach maps, and stratigraphic cross sections have been constructed. An isopotential map defining areas of equal initial gas production has been prepared. Statistics for Letcher County have been run on the database using Datatrieve software package. Statistical analyses focused on different types of formation treatments and the resulting production temperature logs have been used to detect gas-producing intervals within the Mississippian-Devonian black-shale sequence. The results of this research provide the petroleum industry with a valuable tool for gas exploration in the Devonian shales.
