Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Antimony, arsenic, bismuth, germanium, lead, selenium, tellurium and tin just some of the elements which, in trace amounts, have biological, environmental and technological importance. Hydride Generation Atomic Absorption Spectrometry describes one of the most accurate analytical techniques for trace analysis of these elements, sensitive to picogram levels. Over the last decade, significant instrumental and methodological progress has led to HG-AAS being widely applied to an extensive range of sample types. In this first comprehensive monograph on HG-AAS, the authors treat both theoretical and experimental aspects of the subject in a critical and in-depth manner. Hydride Generation Atomic Absorption Spectrometry is divided into two parts, with the theoretical background and experimental approach covered in Part I. Part II discusses the methodology and analytical applications to a wide range of fields, arranged in an easy to use element-by-element format. Over 1500 references provide an exhaustive coverage of the vast literature on HG-AAS, making Hydride Generation Atomic Absorption Spectrometry the premier reference source on this important technique. Hydride Generation Atomic Absorption Spectrometry will be an invaluable reference work for all analysts using hydride generation for AAS or for other spectrometric methods. It will also be of great interest to researchers and students working in atomic spectrometry and trace analysis.

Book excerpt: Atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) is a spectroanalytical procedure for the quantitative determination of chemical elements using the absorption of optical radiation (light) by free atoms in the gaseous state. Atomic absorption is so sensitive that it can measure down to parts per billion of a gram (μg dm-3) in a sample. The technique makes use of the wavelengths of light specifically absorbed by an element. They correspond to the energies needed to promote electrons from one energy level to another, higher, energy level. Atomic absorption spectrometry has many uses in different areas of chemistry. Examining metals in biological fluids such as blood and urine, Monitoring our environment - e.g. finding out the levels of various elements in rivers, seawater, drinking water, air, petrol and drinks such as wine, beer and fruit drink. In some pharmaceutical manufacturing processes, minute quantities of a catalyst used in the process (usually a metal) are sometimes present in the final product. By using AAS the amount of catalyst present can be determined. Many raw materials are examined and AAS is extensively used to check that the major elements are present and that toxic impurities are lower than specified - e.g. in concrete, where calcium is a major constituent, the lead level should be low because it is toxic. By using AAS the amount of metals such as gold in rocks can be determined to see whether it is worth mining the rocks to extract the gold. Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy aims to cover all major topics which are required to equip scholars with the recent advancement in this field. The book provides a systematic treatment of combining flow injection methods with all fields of atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) including flame, hydride generation and electrothermal AAS.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Element speciation determines the different forms a chemicalelement can take within a given compound, enabling chemists topredict possible ramifications for the environment and humanhealth. This comprehensive book focuses on the analytical aspectsand instrumentation of speciation, while covering the gamut ofmetal speciation forms with adverse effects on biological materialsand the environment at large. The book consists of contributions by a truly international groupof leading authorities on element speciation in bioinorganicchemistry. The editor--a contributor here himself--traces thedevelopments in the field, discussing the advances made over thepast decade in various methodologies and the significance of theincreased capacity to detect extremely small concentrations oftrace elements in various media. Several chapters are dedicated to the various methods andapplications of speciation, exploring specific analytical methods, such as direct, chromatographic and nonchromatographic methods, aswell as nuclear-based and voltammetric methods. Others coverspeciation in various natural water and marine environments and itsmanifestation in biological materials, human serum, or foodstuff. In addition, the book examines speciation theory and legal aspectsas well as questions of quality and sources of errors--issues thatunderscore the perennial need to develop new methods for obtainingstill more accurate data. Extremely broad in scope and rich in detail, this volume providesthe key to improving the state of the art in the field, and is sureto stimulate further research. It stands as a one-of-a-kindreference for analytical and inorganic chemists, as well asbiochemists, in a wide range of disciplines, including toxicology, environmental science, nutrition research, clinical chemistry, andpharmacology. A complete reference for the analytical and instrumental aspects ofspeciation This unique volume provides both a comprehensive reference and apractical guide to the complete range of issues arising fromelement speciation. It concentrates on analytical methods andinstrumentation in bioinorganic chemistry--especially as applied towater-related projects--while addressing the larger environmentaland human-health concerns of our times. Complete with over 100 illustrations, this collaborative effort byan international group of experts describes * Methods for the detection and analysis of species elements, including direct methods, atomic spectrometry, nuclear activationanalysis and radio tracer, high-performance chromatography, orvoltammetric procedures * Specific effects of various species elements, including heavymetals, arsenic, and many other trace elements * Biological materials showing concentrations of trace elements, including human serum, milk, and marine organisms * Various environments affected by element speciation, such asnatural waters, sea waters, estuarine, and coastal environments * How to avoid common pitfalls and obtain sound and accuratedata For anyone involved in environmental and earth sciences, as well asthe related areas of public health, pharmacology, toxicology, nutritional research, or environmental regulations, this importantwork offers the most systematic survey of element speciation todate. It also provides historical perspective, a preview ofexpected developments, and a multitude of new ideas for furtherresearch. The author of approximately 240 published papers and three previousbooks, Dr. Caroli is an active member of numerous national andinternational committees and organizations concerned with chemicalsin the environment. He also sits on the editorial or advisoryboards of several scientific journals, including the Journal ofAnalytical Atomic Spectroscopy, Environmental Science and PollutionResearch International, and Microchemical Journal.
