Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latest developments of urban hydrology and hydraulic design procedures for storm water management.Drainage planning is an approach that integrates both local and regional efforts to identify drainage conveyance and storage facilities based on hydrologic optimization and cost minimization individually and collectively. In general, the first six chapters cover the hydrologic procedures for rainfall and runoff predictions, and the next 12 chapters focus on hydraulic designs of urban channel, culvert, street inlet, sewer drain, detention basin, retention basin, infiltration basin, low impact designs, and storm water modeling techniques by various routing methods.Hydrology analyses are lengthy in calculation and repetitive in procedure. As a result, Excel Spreadsheet is the most useful and handy tool for hydraulic and hydrologic designs. This book includes 18 sets of spreadsheets developed for 18 subjects. With these spreadsheets, it is easy for the reader to conduct sensitivity tests. Many of the design methods documented in this book have been adopted as the recommended design procedure by Denver, Las Vegas, and Sacramento metropolitan areas in the United States. Based on these methods, there are many design computer models that have been developed and supported by the Denver metro governments for stormwater design purposes.

Book excerpt: With population of our planet exceeding seven billion, funds for infrastructure works being limited worldwide and climate change affecting water resources, their optimal development and management is literally vital. This volume deals with application of some non-traditional optimization techniques to hydraulics, hydrology and water resources management and aims at helping scientists dealing with these issues to reach the best decisions. Chapter 1 is a brief introduction to optimization and its application to water resources management. Chapter 2 is dedicated to genetic algorithms. Chapter 3 focuses on applications of genetic algorithms to hydraulic networks, mainly irrigation ones. Chapter 4 is dedicated to simulated annealing. The particle swarm method (PSO) is discussed in Chapter 5. In Chapter 6 the basic concepts and features of Tabu search are presented and its coupling with other heuristic optimizers is discussed. Chapter 7 is dedicated to the Harmony Search method. Finally, Chapter 8 deals with the Outer Approximation method. This book is aimed at engineers and other scientists working on water resources management and hydraulic networks.

Book excerpt: Computational hydraulics and hydrologic modeling are rapidly developing fields with a wide range of applications in areas ranging from wastewater disposal and stormwater management to civil and environmental engineering. These fields are full of promise, but the abundance of literature that now exists contains many new terms that are not always defined. Computational Hydraulics and Hydrology: An Illustrated Dictionary defines more that 4,000 basic terms and phrases related to water conveyance with emphasis on computational hydraulics and hydrologic modeling. Compiled by Nicolas G. Adrien, a noted consulting engineer with three decades of experience, this dictionary includes detailed references to actual modeling studies, nearly 100 illustrations, 150 equations and formulas, and many notations. It also includes a chapter of application examples and another containing more than 6,000 related terms with a list of resources where interested readers can find additional definitions. Other dictionaries and glossaries related to these areas tend to be either dated or much narrower in scope. This dictionary offers broad, practice-based coverage of terms culled directly from the latest texts, references, and actual engineering reports. Computational Hydraulics and Hydrology: An Illustrated Dictionary stands alone in providing ready access to the vocabulary of these subjects.

The emphasis is on engineering calculations rather than theory. Many facets of stormwater management, from rainfall analysis and design storm selection procedures to runoff calculations and the evaluation of wet ponds for long-term, efficient water quality control. The book presents broadly used conventional methods and innovative techniques that are in line with current trends and needs. The book also includes the Soil Conservation Service's TR-20 computer software and a new easy-to-follow user's guide. From the Preface There has been much interest in urban stormwater hydrology during the past two decades due to the widespread recognition of the adverse effects of urbanization on stormwater runoff. During this period, many individuals and organizations developed innovative techniques to estimate and control the quantity and the water quality of urban stormwater runoff.

Book excerpt: This book presents quality technical papers representing the recent developments in the field of hydrological modeling, water management and water governance including practical applications. The content covers multifarious aspects of hydrology and water resources. It includes an application of the Hydrologic Modelling System (HEC-HMS) which has been successfully demonstrated for assessment of floods. The authors suggest an approach for the mitigation of cyclone disaster through a case study of the Phailin cyclone, whilst considering mitigating pluvial flooding, developing suitable management strategies. The book includes chapters discussing the detrended fluctuation analysis which is carried out for multifractal description of droughts. Drought characteristics are analyzed, and drought indices evolved for drought preparedness/management. The use of science in community planning under changing climate is also studied and discussed. The authors present and experimental study wherein hydraulic coefficients are calibrated by using vertical orifice. A cross flow hybrid hydrokinetic turbine is also evaluated for performance, and high head regulating radial gate designed and studied its sensitivity. This book will appeal to researchers, field practitioners, NGO and other Governmental as well as private water practitioners

This book was released on 2021-01-27 with total page 781 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the core areas of study in civil engineering concerns water that encompasses fluid mechanics, hydraulics and hydrology. Fluid mechanics provide the mathematical and scientific basis for hydraulics and hydrology that also have added empirical and practical contents. The knowledge contained in these three subjects is necessary for the optimal and equitable management of this precious resource that is not always available when and where it is needed, sometimes with conflicting demands. The objective of Fluid Mechanics, Hydraulics, Hydrology and Water Resources for Civil Engineers is to assimilate these core study areas into a single source of knowledge. The contents highlight the theory and applications supplemented with worked examples and also include comprehensive references for follow-up studies. The primary readership is civil engineering students who would normally go through these core subject areas sequentially spread over the duration of their studies. It is also a reference for practicing civil engineers in the water sector to refresh and update their skills.

Book excerpt: Effective urban drainage to manage stormwater and control flooding depends on good engineering, especially when an environmentally sustainable approach is being applied. This new text focuses on green methods and modelling techniques. It covers the principles of hydrology and drainage, low-impact-development (LID) designs, computer modelling techniques, the evaluation of existing systems, and planning for both new development and urban renewal. It outlines design procedures using examples, spreadsheet models, photos, and real-world design examples. Unlike other books, which focus on extreme events, this book covers hydrologic designs for both extreme and frequent events, and reflects the latest revolution in stormwater LID management, and takes a quantitative as well as a qualitative approach. PowerPoint® presentations and Excel® computer models are provided to follow and build on the exercises in the book. It is written especially for students on urban watershed courses, and also for those studying urban planning, landscaping, water resources, hydrology and hydraulics.

This book was released on 2009-03-17 with total page 611 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid conversion of land to urban and suburban areas has profoundly altered how water flows during and following storm events, putting higher volumes of water and more pollutants into the nation's rivers, lakes, and estuaries. These changes have degraded water quality and habitat in virtually every urban stream system. The Clean Water Act regulatory framework for addressing sewage and industrial wastes is not well suited to the more difficult problem of stormwater discharges. This book calls for an entirely new permitting structure that would put authority and accountability for stormwater discharges at the municipal level. A number of additional actions, such as conserving natural areas, reducing hard surface cover (e.g., roads and parking lots), and retrofitting urban areas with features that hold and treat stormwater, are recommended.
