This thesis investigates the optimization of the hybrid operating strategy on board the EcoCAR development vehicle. This investigation provides the framework to investigate the pros and cons of different hybrid control strategies, develop the model based design process for controls development in a student team environment and take the learning of this research and apply them to a mule development vehicle. A primary controls development model was created to simulate software controls before releasing to the vehicle level and served as a tool to evaluate and compare control strategies. The optimization routine was not directly compatible with this model and so a compromise was made to develop a simplified vehicle model in the MATLAB environment that would be useful for observing trends but realizing that the accuracy of the results may not be totally consistent with the real world vehicle. These optimization results were then used to create a new control strategy that was simulated in the original vehicle development model. This new control strategy exhibited a 15% gain in fuel economy over the best case from the literature during an Urban Dynamometer Driving Schedule (UDDS) drive cycle. Recommendations for future work include adding charge depletion operation to the simulation test cases and improving the accuracy of the optimization model by removing the simplifications that contributed to faster simulation time. This research has also illustrated the wide variability of drive cycles from the mildly aggressive UDDS cycle having 5 kilowatts average propulsion power to the very aggressive US06 cycle having 19 kilowatts average propulsion power and their impact on the efficiency of a particular control strategy. Understanding how to adapt or tune software for particular drive cycle or driver behaviour may lead to an interesting area of research.

The first part of this project involves the development of the simulation package from an existing MATLAB/Simulink based model. This model is modified and improved to more accurately simulate the real-world vehicle and also to allow for various parametric studies to be performed. The resulting simulation package is called Light, Fast, and Modifiable or LFM. Three different parametric studies are performed using the LFM simulation platform. The first involves vehicle design parameters. This experiment studies the effect of various vehicle parameters such as tire rolling resistance, vehicle mass, drag coefficient on vehicle performance. The second study involves hybrid control strategy parameters. The hybrid control strategy controls the flow of power between each of the power sources and is vital to proper vehicle performance. This experiment studies the effect of various scaling factors in the hybrid control strategy. The third parametric study involves the input drive cycle. A drive cycle is a speed vs. time data set that effectively "drives" the simulation. This experiment studies how different statistical quantities that describe a drive cycle (such as average speed, average acceleration, etc.) affect vehicle performance. Also using the LFM vehicle simulator, a new hybrid control strategy, called Drive Cycle Recognition (DCR), is developed and investigated. DCR involves classification of the current vehicle drive cycle (speed vs. time history) based on certain representative drive cycles. The identification is performed using the key statistical information explored in the drive cycle parametric study. It is shown that DCR can be used in a simulated environment to significantly improve upon the current strategy by addressing faults in the most sensitive parameters. Furthermore, a real world implementation of DCR on the University of Delaware Fuel Cell Bus shows that the current fuel cell configuration is undersized for the effective use of DCR. Finally, the LFM simulator is used to perform a Degree-of-Hybridization (DOH) analysis. This analysis involves experimenting with different balances between the power sources available in a hybrid vehicle. It is shown that an optimum balance exists for each driving style, but a significant compromise is needed to cover all driving styles the vehicle is likely to encounter.

Environmental, political, and monetary concerns are driving the automotive industry towards sustainable transportation, manifested as increasing powertrain electrification in a gradual transition to fossil-free energy vectors. From an electrochemical degradation and control systems perspective, this transition introduces significant technical uncertainty. Initial indications are that the initial battery designs will have twice the required capacity due to degradation concerns. As the battery is a major contributor to the cost of these vehicles the over-sizing represents a significant threat to the ability of OEMs to produce cost-competitive vehicles. This potential barrier is further amplified when the combustion engine is removed and battery-electric or fuel-cell hybrid vehicles are considered. This thesis researches the application of model-based design for optimal design of fuel cell hybrid powertrains considering power source degradation. The intent is to develop and evaluate tools that can determine the optimal sizing and control of the powertrain; reducing the amount of over-sizing by numerically optimization rather than a sub-optimal heuristic design. A baseline hybrid fuel cell vehicle model is developed and validated to a hybrid fuel cell SUV designed and built at the University of Waterloo. Lithium-ion battery degradation models are developed and validated to data captured off a hybrid powertrain test stand built as part of this research. A fuel cell degradation model is developed and integrated into the vehicle model. Lifetime performance is modeled for four hybrid control strategies, demonstrating a significant impact of the hybrid control strategy on powertrain degradation. A plug-in variation of the architecture is developed. The capacity degradation of the battery is found to be more significant than the power degradation. Blended and All-electric charge-depleting hybrid control strategies are integrated and lifetime performance is simulated. The blended charge-depleting control strategy demonstrated significantly less degradation than the all-electric strategy. An oversized battery is integrated into the vehicle model and the benefit of oversizing on reducing the battery degradation rate is demonstrated.

Fuel cell hybrid vehicles have similar power trains to conventional series hybrid electric vehicles. The underlying hybrid control concepts used for conventional hybrid vehicles are still valid although it is unknown how well they will perform on fuel cell based vehicles since the fuel cell is a fundamentally different power source. This thesis reviews several control strategies for fuel cell vehicles including a mode switching rule-based control strategy, a constant fuel cell output strategy and an adaptive variation of the equivalent consumption minimization strategy (A-ECMS) which has been modified for fuel cell vehicles. These strategies are implemented in simulation and evaluated against optimal strategies. The optimal strategies have been determined using convex optimization problem solving techniques. The mode switching and constant fuel cell strategies have also been evaluated in real world testing on a fully functional, road safe, fuel cell powered SUV. The test vehicle was designed and built by the University of Waterloo Alternative Fuels Team (UWAFT) for the EcoCAR competition. The simulation results demonstrate that near optimal fuel economies can be achieved through operating the fuel cell at near peak efficiency while the battery manages all major transients in the power demand. The constant fuel cell strategy demonstrates the highest fuel economy of all the tested strategies since it operates continually within this high efficiency region. The mode based strategy showed the worst results since the fuel cell would follow the transients of the power demand, pushing it out of the peak efficiency region. The simulation results were validated by the experimental results which showed similar relationships. The A-ECMS provided good results although they were lower than the constant fuel cell strategy. Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles have the real potential to become the next major vehicle technology. Only by continuing to research every aspect of these vehicles needed to make them viable for consumer use can these vehicles ever replace the gasoline powered vehicles we use today.
