Book excerpt: Commercial buildings account for around one third of the total electricity consumption in the United States, of which a significant amount is wasted. Heating Ventilation and Cooling (HVAC) systems are one of the largest components of the overall energy consumption in buildings and by improving the operational condition and efficiency of HVAC systems, significant savings can be achieved. Quantification of HVAC performance and characteristics is a critical step in the diagnostics, prognostics, and improvement of savings opportunities. Identifying savings through virtual energy audits using widely available smart-meter time-series data of the total energy consumption is an efficient and robust procedure that can be applied to a large number of buildings' datasets. In this study, we will develop a systematic, automated, and scalable pipeline for quantifying HVAC characteristics from the total energy consumption of smart-meter data to identify savings opportunities in commercial buildings and determine the critical affecting parameters. The automated pipeline layout will not only structure, clean, ingest, and interactively analyze the data, but also utilize the high performance computing cluster (HPC) and a smart job scheduler that we developed in addition to existing resources. Then, two main HVAC savings opportunities of rescheduling and baseload savings through setpoint setback will be quantified and discussed, and the results will be scaled to a statistically significant population of buildings across the US for comparative analysis. We will identify and discuss target buildings with the highest savings opportunities. Then, we will propose a data-driven method for setting back the setpoint of HVAC cooling by 1 degree increments on data and quantify the associated savings followed by a comparative study on the population and variable importance analysis, accordingly. As a result of the automated pipeline, 816 buildings' datasets across the United States have been processed efficiently, with significant improvement in data quality, and a processing time of 34 minutes which is 86 times faster than a sequence pipeline. Also, through a population study, we will illustrate that with applying the proposed HVAC savings to each dataset at cooling degree days, when the average daily temperature is above HVAC cooling setpoint, unoccupied time baseload and rescheduling savings with the median of 1.63% and 2.12% reduction from annual energy consumption can be obtained, respectively. Furthermore, by setpoint setback analysis, we will demonstrate that air conditioning in commercial buildings account for $9.5\%$ of the total energy consumption and with one degree setback, 1.1% of the annual energy consumption is reduced with retail and office buildings containing the highest potential.

Book excerpt: A major portion of the energy consumed in residential buildings is used for heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems. In fact, globally, HVAC systems consume more than 50% of the energy used in buildings. Many HVAC systems do not operate efficiently and lose 25-40% of their cooling or heating energy. Furthermore, considering daily temperature fluctuations, the efficiency of HVAC systems can be improved through the use of thermal energy storage (TES). The focus of this thesis is to investigate the potential to enhance the performance of HVAC systems through the use of fans, dampers, and integrated TES. Low-powered fans placed in vents (booster fans) are investigated for their performance to improve heating and cooling and reduce HVAC system run times. Furthermore, "smart" booster fans and dampers are considered in the simulations by optimizing the times at which they can be turned on or off during the simulations. Results show that the smart booster fan can significantly improve, even by greater than a factor of two, the airflow at a bad vent and the duty cycle of HVAC systems can be reduced to 4.5 hr/day. Duct systems with silica-based TES are also investigated. The silica-based TES system is charged using hot air, coming from a fan equipped with a resistive heater. Thus, the stored thermal energy is generated using electric power, providing an avenue for efficient electrification of heating in buildings. Experimental results show more than 50% of the amount of thermal energy that can be stored in the silica gel can be stored and retrieved as heated air.

Book excerpt: Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) is the technology responsible to maintain temperature levels and air quality in buildings to certain standards. In a commercial setting, HVAC systems accounted for more than 50% of the total energy cost of the building in 2013 [13]. New control methods are always being worked on to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the system. These control systems include model predictive control (MPC), evolutionary algorithm (EA), evolutionary programming (EP), and proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers. Such control tools are used on new HVAC system to ensure the ultimate efficiency and ensure the comfort of occupants. However, there is a need for a system that can monitor the energy performance of the HVAC system and ensure that it is operating in its optimal operation and controlled as expected. In this thesis, an air handling unit (AHU) of an HVAC system was modeled to analyze its performance using real data collected from an operating AHU using a wireless monitoring system. The purpose was to monitor the AHU's performance, analyze its key parameters to identify flaws, and evaluate the energy waste. This system will provide the maintenance personnel to key information to them to act for increasing energy efficiency. The mechanical model was experimentally validated first. Them a baseline operating condition was established. Finally, the system under extreme weather conditions was evaluated. The AHU's subsystem performance, the energy consumption and the potential wastes were monitored and quantified. The developed system was able to constantly monitor the system and report to the maintenance personnel the information they need. I can be used to identify energy savings opportunities due to controls malfunction. Implementation of this system will provide the system's key performance indicators, offer feedback for adjustment of control strategies, and identify the potential savings. To further verify the capabilities of the model, a case study was performed on an air handling unit on campus for a three month monitoring period. According to the mechanical model, a total of 63,455 kWh can be potentially saved on the unit by adjusting controls. In addition the mechanical model was able to identify other energy savings opportunities due to set point changes that may result in a total of 77,141 kWh.
