Book excerpt: Tracking hackers and crackers for the FBI’s National Infrastructure Protection Center looks like a vivid video game to an outsider, but the outcome of the play is deadly serious. Through her online feline avatar, Sekhmet, Sue Anne Jones stalks the V-Net, the ultimate virtual-reality interface, in pursuit of evil in all its online forms. Her partner, ex-cracker Loren Hunter, provides cynical commentary along with his expertise in the V-Net’s shadier alleys. Their days of busting routine identity thieves and insidious corporate spies end when they get a new assignment: Hunt down a cyber-terrorist calling himself Gideon, who has infiltrated the financial system, rerouted supply lines, and murdered the supervisor of an automated factory. Now Gideon is sending taunting messages, quoting scripture, and warning Sue that she must join his crusade or suffer—along with the rest of the virtual world—when he takes total control of the V-Net. Written by the author of the Seventh Seal last-days adventure trilogy, Hunting Gideon is a near-future cyberpunk novel with an optimistic Mormon twist. Incorporating elements from the hard-boiled detective novel, film noir, and postmodernist prose, much of the novel’s action takes place online in cyberspace, blurring the border between actual and virtual reality. Hunting Gideon sends Sue and Loren on a wild chase as they scramble to avert the ultimate online disaster.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Gideon Lincecum's lifetime the United States expanded from fifteen to thirty-eight states—and Lincecum moved always with or ahead of that expansion. Possessed of a driving intellectual curiosity undeterred by lack of formal education, Lincecum examined all he confronted. He learned from Indians, he read widely, and he corresponded with the great minds of his day. In the process he became many things: physician, musician, botanist, entomologist, ornithologist, and translator of Indian dialects. His collection of information and specimens in the field of natural science was used by leading authorities. From his voluminous letters, Mrs. Burkhalter has constructed a picture of a "remarkable and delightful American who deserves a place in the history of this country."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gideon’s People is the story of an American Indian community in the Housatonic Valley of northwestern Connecticut. It is based on some three decades of nearly uninterrupted German-language diaries and allied records kept by the Moravian missionaries who had joined the Indians at a place called Pachgatgoch, later Schaghticoke. It is supplemented by colonial records and regional political, social, and religious histories and ethnographies. As such, it represents the only comprehensive, thoroughly contextualized description of a Native people in southern New England and adjacent eastern New York for the mid-eighteenth century. The Moravians’ diaries report on the day-to-day activities in the community, including house-building, the production of material goods, hunting, fishing, and farming. We are told of marriages, births, deaths, disease, and the calamity of alcohol abuse. The unavoidable interactions with surrounding Indians and close-by colonial farmers and townspeople are offered in detail, along with the sometimes contentious relations with local and colonial authorities. And there is the omnipresence of the missionaries’ religious message to the Indians, frequently accepted and then tested by the inevitable temptations and, more than once, spurned. But we also learn of the struggles of the Moravians to feed and clothe themselves at a distance from their congregation in Bethlehem and their endeavors, often marked by conflict and deep personal pain, to lead their Native flock to the Lamb.

Book excerpt: Sterling Monedero is not your typical necromancer. Even with the game system and mancer class forced onto him by the alien monoliths known as Godwalkers, Sterling just wants to farm his peppers in peace and live out the rest of his troubled existence in quiet. He did that whole 'trying to get revenge on the Godwalkers' thing five years ago, and failed miserably. But when the Godwalkers show back up for their own bit of revenge - and Killbilly bandits appear trying to impose a pepper tax - the tough-as-bones loner decides enough is enough. It's time to reassemble the team, kick some much needed ass, and put an end to the alien threat once and for all. Or die trying. Set in a richly imagined post-apocalyptic New Mexico, this gritty LitRPG western features superpowered mancers, terrifying animal-skeletal hybrids, an intricate game system, and a big dose of Southwestern mysticism. Inspired by The Dark Tower, Old Man Logan, and Red Dead Redemption, best-selling author Harmon Cooper takes you on a high-octane thrill ride through desolate landscapes and dystopian urban decay, on an adventure that doesn't know how to back down from a challenge.

Book excerpt: The second Nightwalkers thriller “offers a remarkable twist on the lore of creatures of the night”—from the New York Times–bestselling author of Jacob (Booklist). A sister of the king of Demons—a Nightwalker species gifted with the elemental powers of nature—Magdelegna is an empath and peacekeeper. But ever since she was rescued from a human necromancer’s pentagram, Legna has been feeling restless and hot-tempered, no matter how hard she tries to tamp down her warring emotions. Having existed for more than a millennium, the silver-eyed Gideon is the oldest and most powerful of his kind. A Body Demon, he is a powerful healer, but even he can’t cure Legna’s long-standing aversion to him. That is, until their latent hostility towards each other explodes into a passionate melding of bodies—and minds. Legna has no idea what the infusion of Gideon’s power will do to a Demon as young as she is, but she’s about to find out. A shocking betrayal puts them on the front lines of a battle against the fear, hatred, and prejudice of corrupted humans and their tainted black magic. “[A] seductively crafted universe . . . Psychological depth, vivid detail and personal chemistry . . . make its sensitive, scorching romantic components so compelling.” —Publishers Weekly “Second in Frank’s spicy Nightwalkers series, this fascinating story skillfully reprises characters from the first book while providing a self-contained, fully charged story of its own.” —Library Journal
