Marshall as he recounts more than forty years of stories and anecdotes chock-full of dogs, good friends and fast-paced waterfowl action. It takes stubborn dedication and passionate optimism to brave the frosty, wet conditions for the chance to shoot ducks and geese. And yet the tradition continues every year as more than one million waterfowl occupy the waters of the Chesapeake. Whether you are setting decoys or watching the sun rise from a blind, hunting the bay is as challenging as it is rewarding. No one understands that better than the generations who have experienced it, from the goose pits of Rock Hall and Chestertown to the frothing whitewater of the Tangier Sound.

It's more often the failures rather than the successes that stick in the memories of outdoorsmen. Late September can bring some of the best white marlin fishing of the season to Delmarva, but sometimes you catch a batch of pineapples instead. Sometimes poor weather and a rough season can lead to a duck depression, but one good afternoon can turn it all around. The relationships built during these hunting and fishing adventures can make up for even the worst of days - a broken boat, the loss of a beloved dog and more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To the west is a stretch of Interstate 95 running from the D.C. suburbs to the South Carolina state line. To the east is the Atlantic Ocean. What lies in between, a four-hundred-mile stretch of coastal country traversing Virginia and North Carolina, is home to some of the best hunting and fishing grounds on the East Coast. For the first time, those who love to hunt and fish this unique area have a book. In Outdoors Year Round Stephen Ausband looks at an uncommonly rich spectrum of outdoor opportunities. Readers will delight in accounts of night fishing in Pamlico Sound, surf casting at Chincoteague, and bottom fishing in Chesapeake Bay. Ausband also covers large and small game, including numerous waterfowl and upland bird hunts, deer hunting tips for both rifle and bow hunters, and the pleasures of tracking bear with a practiced guide. The book is laid out chronologically, its twelve chapters covering each of the twelve months, from duck hunting in January to fishing for gray trout at Christmastime. Each chapter features two trips that allow the reader to take full advantage of what each month has to offer. These custom itineraries, which include complete traveling instructions and pricing information, outline exceptional hunting and fishing opportunities that do not strain the pocketbook. But Ausband provides more than just great practical advice. He also relates his personal experiences as an avid outdoorsman, one who has heard the howl of the red wolf near the Alligator River and flushed black ducks on the Eastern Shore--as well as his thoughts on introducing newcomers, particularly young people, to the diversity of life in the tidal zone. This is a book sportsmen will reach for, month in and month out. With Outdoors Year Round, there is no off-season.

Book excerpt: Rudow's Guide to Fishing the Chesapeake is the most comprehensive handbook for anglers on all of the Chesapeake's waters from main-stem bay to tributaries and tidal creeks. Detailed charts feature over 550 boating hot spots and 35 public shoreline fishing spots, plus 33 reliable public boat ramps. Specific bay sportfish and the most effective methods of catching them during each phase of the season are meticulously discussed on a fish-by-fish basis, as are both modern and traditional tackle and rigs. Never before has a fishing guide tackled each aspect of angling the Chesapeake Bay so thoroughly. Topics are as varied as casting for spring trophy rockfish on the Susquehanna Flats, jigging for seatrout at the Bay Bridge, wire-lining for flounder at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, and ice fishing for perch in Port Deposit are all covered in depth. There are even sections on shoreline fishing for each area of the Chesapeake. If you want to boost your catch rate every time you fish the bay, this book will help you do it. Book excerpt: Photographer Jay Fleming turned his attention to Smith and Tangier Islands - the Chesapeake Bay's last inhabited 'water-locked' islands. Fleming has made countless trips to the islands to document the unique way of life and environment that have been shaped by isolation and the waters of the Chesapeake. This collection of photographs will fill the pages of Fleming's second book, Island Life. This body work comes at an important time for the islands, as their populations continue to decline and the unrelenting forces of the bay threaten the working working waterfronts that have sustained the communities for centuries. Fleming hopes that his photography will immerse readers in the Island Life and capture a crucial moment in time for the Chesapeake's most unique communities.

Book excerpt: Excerpt: ...or canoes. Especially do they endanger those that bathe. Once I cooled and amused myself in the water with swimming, not knowing that there was any danger, but my host informed me that there was. The waters and especially the tributaries are filled with turtles. They show themselves in large numbers when it is warm. Then they come to the land or climb up on pieces of wood or trees lying in the water. When one travels in a ship their heads can be seen everywhere coming out of the water. The abundance of oysters is incredible. There are whole banks of them so that the ships must avoid them. A sloop, which was to land us at Kingscreek, struck an oyster bed, where we had to wait about two hours for the tide. They surpass those in England by far in size, indeed, they are four times as large. I often cut them in two, before I could put them into my mouth. The inhabitants usually catch them on Saturday. It is not troublesome. A pair of wooden tongs is needed. Below they are wide, tipped with iron. At the time of the ebb they row to the beds and with the long tongs they reach down to the bottom. They pinch them together tightly and then pull or tear up that which has been seized. They usually pull from six to ten times. In summer they are not very good, but unhealthy and can cause fever. The most comprehensive list of fish thus far given by the early historians was offered by Robert Beverley in 1705. Again as with John Smith, there are names that do not fit in today. But these are very few: "greenfish," "maid," "wife," and "frogfish" perhaps, all of which, however, are well-known in England. The recurring mention of carp in the early authorities quoted is interesting, since it has long been believed that carp were introduced into the Chesapeake region in 1877 by the U.S. Fish Commission. No doubt that was carp of another species. The esteemed sheepshead is today very rare: As for fish, both of fresh and salt water, of...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part documentary, part nostalgic history, and part informational catalogue, Waterfowling on the Chesapeake, 1819–1936 explores a century of hunting on the Chesapeake Bay and its major tributaries—from the heyday of gun clubs and market shooting to the rise of conservation law. Drawing on oral histories and period documents and artifacts, C. John Sullivan, a longtime collector of decoys and hunting paraphernalia and a frequent guest curator of exhibits, looks at the effects of technological change, the relationship between hunter and dog, the recognition of decoys as folk art, and the history of hunting. He also introduces us to famous and lesser-known carvers and others who share an enthusiasm for this feature of Chesapeake cultural history and life.
