Book excerpt: The story of the green knight who defended Tyre against the besieging army of Saladin is bequeathed to us as a remarkable feat of chivalrous tradition. Sidi Kafir resuscitates this historical legend by making him the last pagan Viking caught up in the turmoil of the Crusades. As a vagrant adventurer looking for new horizons, Ulyssess nordic son is on a personal odyssey in search of love and knightly prowess. Its lessons are so relevant today: the clash of civilisations, alike the original Crusades, tears asunder the harmony amongst peoples by its sterile, warlike confrontation that knows no issue other than mutual distrust and destruction, instead of convivencia, cooperation and mutual respect. The medieval age saw the rebirth of international trade, as during the Roman age, along the silk and spice routes linking the Orient to the Occident. This trade renaissance is a recurrent theme that now dominates the debate on globalisation. Its origins are examined here with the birth of Italian city republics, which created the monetary system at Venice, then the manufacturing base in Tuscany in the Renaissance age. The pursuit of happiness through growing grapevines, imported from Palestine to Europe in the form of the Chardonnay grape, is a legendary legacy to epicurean man.

Book excerpt: Mac Lewis was a crew boat operator for a small boat rental company. On that blistering Louisiana afternoon, he was to conduct crewmembers of a large, inland oil-drilling barge to the latest drilling station. It was business as usual, and he brought his rowdy, roughneck farers to work without much ado. When night descended upon the waters, however, Mac found himself unable to sleep. After much tossing and turning to the sound of heavy drilling engines and clanging of pipes, he finally drifted into a listless sleep. However, Mac would wake up to an entirely new realm of existence. The clanging sounds and thunderous drilling were gone, to be replaced by an eerie quiet, a most unusual phenomenon in the midst of a drilling station. Not only that, but he would begin to realize that his entire body was different, too different to be his ? too different to be a man?s. With the final, unmistakable assessment to verify that his manhood was nonexistent, the unbelievable reality set in with dawning horror. Mac was now a man in a woman?s body. Who was this woman and why was he in her body? Why had it happened? Where in the world was he? The questions would come forth unrestrained and unanswered. Thus, begins the greatest adventure of Mac?s life, a surreal adventure indeed as, for the first time, he would view the world through the other side of the gender fence ? with the eyes, body, and life of a woman. As the questions drive him to seek for answers, he would find out just how it would feel to literally be in a woman?s shoes, dodging compromising situations, experiencing a much heightened danger on the streets and the ever-present emotions that course through a woman?s being. Lucas? The Other Side is absolutely riveting, a compelling read that readers will find hard to put down.

Book excerpt: “A delightfully weird and very queer reimagining of 90s YA nostalgia.” —Autostraddle "Queer dynamite." —Kristen Arnett, author of Mostly Dead Things Finalist for the 2022 Lambda Literary Award in Transgender Fiction Meet Margaret. At age twelve, she was head detective of the mystery club Girls Can Solve Anything. Margaret and her three best friends led exciting lives solving crimes, having adventures, and laughing a lot. But now that she's entered high school, the club has disbanded, and Margaret is unmoored—she doesn't want to grow up, and she wishes her friends wouldn't either. Instead, she opts out, developing an eating disorder that quickly takes over her life. When she lands in a treatment center, Margaret finds her path to recovery twisting sideways as she pursues a string of new mysteries involving a ghost, a hidden passage, disturbing desires, and her own vexed relationship with herself. Margaret and the Mystery of the Missing Body reimagines nineties adolescence—mashing up girl group series, choose-your-own-adventures, and chronicles of anorexia—in a queer and trans coming-of-age tale like no other. An interrogation of girlhood and nostalgia, dysmorphia and dysphoria, this debut novel puzzles through the weird, ever-evasive questions of growing up.

Book excerpt: Shows the unsightly side of the Habsburg Empire. It is a declaration of disagreement with idealization of the Austrian partition and the model of state management used in its territory. From the postcolonial point of view, it is a novel about people and territories forced, in spite of bloody resistance, to become the periphery of an empire. The Old Republic of Poland was not a glorious metropolis, but it was still a metropolis. Colonization transformed and divided this metropolis into provinces of three empires, with all the consequences that a transformation of this kind brings. The so-called Polish Sarmatism, from which the heroes of Ashes derive endowed citizens of "Sarmatian" Poland with a sense of self-worth and liberty. Austrian colonization destroyed their liberty and compelled the Poles to serve the interests of their conquerors. Ashes is a narrative of the Sarmatian culture that survived among the nobility with pedigrees and estates, and was also potentially present among smallholders with no pedigree and no assets. The novel suggests that it is not necessary to be a noble to possess the sense of liberty that the Republic of Poland developed and cultivated.

Book excerpt: Having had enough of the city life, Sarah Mackenzie quits her job, packs up her car full of her belongings, says good-bye to her best friend, and heads out west to outback New South Wales, back to the small town of Carringborough. Growing up, Sarah had spent all of her school holidays at her aunt Elsies farm on the outskirts of town. Over those many years, Sarah had formed friendships in town. She also found her first love, her only true love. Even though those days were long ago, Sarah felt the need to return to the comfort of Carringborough and the loving arms of Aunt Elsie. Elsie was quick to enlist her nieces help to turn her home into a farm stay before Sarah found out that Connor Johnson, the man behind her first broken heart, had also moved back to town. It had been nine years since they had last seen each other, but it took only seconds of Sarah and Connor being together before sparks of passion and anger fired between them. Would they be able to get through the hurt of the past and rekindle their romance, or would they avoid each other at all costs?

Book excerpt: An often-ignored middle sister gets attention from a dark stranger in this fantasy romance trilogy opener by the author of the Forgotten Empires series. The tales tell of three sisters, daughters of the high king. The eldest, a valiant warrior-woman, heir to the kingdom. The youngest, the sweet beauty with her Prince Charming. No one says much about the middle princess, Andromeda. Andi, the other one. Andi doesn’t mind being invisible. She enjoys the company of her horse more than court, and she has a way of blending into the shadows. Until the day she meets a strange man riding, who keeps company with wolves and ravens, who rules a land of shapeshifters and demons. A country she’d thought was no more than legend—until he claims her as its queen. In a moment everything changes: Her father, the wise king, becomes a warlord, suspicious and strategic. Whispers call her dead mother a traitor and a witch. Andi doesn’t know if her own instincts can be trusted, as visions appear to her and her body begins to rebel. For Andi, the time to learn her true nature has come . . . Perfect for fans of Game of Thrones looking for more romance. Praise for The Mark of Tala “This magnificent fairy tale will captivate you from the beginning to end with a richly detailed fantasy world full of shapeshifters, magic and an exciting romance!” —RT Book Reviews, 4.5 Stars “This promises to be a trilogy that will leave readers enthralled.” —Heroes & Heartbreakers
