Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samuel Beckett and the Theatre of the Witness explores Beckett's representation of physical pain in his theatre plays in the long aftermath of World War II, emphasising how the issues raised by this staging of pain speak directly to matters lying at the heart of his work: the affective power of the human body; the doubtful capacity of language as a means of communication; the aesthetic and ethical functioning of the theatre medium; and the vexed question of intersubjective empathy. Alongside the wartime and post-war plays of fellow Francophone writers Albert Camus, Eugène Ionesco, Pablo Picasso, and Marguerite Duras, this study resituates Beckett's early plays in a new conceptualising of le théâtre du témoin or a 'theatre of the witness'. These are plays concerned with the epistemological and ethical uncertainties of witnessing another's pain, rather than with the sufferer's own direct experience. They raise troubling questions about our capacity to comprehend and respond to another being's pain. Drawing on an interdisciplinary framework of extant criticism, recorded historical audience response, theatre and affect theory, and medical understandings of bodily pain, Hannah Simpson argues that these plays do not offer any easily negotiable encounter with physical suffering, pushing us to recognise the very 'otherness' of another being's pain, even as it invades our own affective sphere. In place of any comforting transcendence or redemption of endured pain, they offer a starkly sceptical, even pessimistic probing of what it is to witness another's suffering.

Book excerpt: Amédée creates a comic uproar out of a steadily-growing corpse just outside the bedroom of a middle-class couple. In The new tenant , a man moves furniture into his new apartment. Slowly the articles accumulate until there is no room left. In Victims of duty, the playwright has tried to drown the comic in the tragic, to oppose them in order to reunite them in a new synthesis.

Book excerpt: Welcome to the world of Eugene Ionesco; A place where the absurdity of the human condition stretches to an extent that shakes the foundation of the mess we call life. We find 'The Character' on his final day at the job. His recent inheritance from a relative he didn't know has given him enough capitol to retire early and break the bondage of his cubicle. With his past flames, former disgruntled colleagues, and favorite dive in the rear view, he sets out into a world that his new found wealth brings: An apartment in a high rise nestled amongst an assortment of kooky neighbors. He finds his way to a nearby bistro that he'll eventually frequent daily and kindles a romance with a waitress named Agnes. All is well for a time until revolution erupts and sends his suburban neighborhood into chaos. To find refuge from the war torn streets, he bars himself to the confines of his apartment and lives out his remaining years in solitude pondering on the loves that were lost, the beauty of complacency, and the boredom of Sundays.

Book excerpt: What happens when you do go home again? When the Man of the title heads back to the land of this childhood, the notions of time, space, and memories merge to create a dreamscape of great insight, passion, and humor. Like great works of visual art, Ionesco weaves commonplace ideas, images, and observations in order to unmask complex truths, and profound ambiguities. --From publisher's description.

Gaensbauer's study examines, decade by decade, not only his dramatic works but also his early publications in Romania, his journals and personal essays, and even his painting. In viewing Ionesco's career as a continuous whole, Gaensbauer discovers that each work is essentially one piece of the long autobiography of a writer deeply engaged with a spiritual quest to understand himself and humanity.
