Book Synopsis Hungarian Classical Ballads by : Ninon A. M. Leader
Download or read book Hungarian Classical Ballads written by Ninon A. M. Leader and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1967-07-02 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Hungarian ballads were first collected about a hundred years before this book was first published in 1967, they have remained largely unknown to Western scholars. This was the first comprehensive study of the Hungarian material in any major European language. Dr Leader provides an analytic description and full English text of the main Hungarian classical ballads with their published versions. She examines their characteristics, analyses their themes, motifs and underlying folk beliefs, and relates them to ballads of other countries, particularly England and Scotland. This pioneer work suggested fresh interpretations and solutions to the problems of Hungarian ballad scholarship and enlarged the study of international ballads by making the Magyar material available in translation. It had repercussions on a wide range of folklore studies and on the comparative study of European literatures, to which the oral narrative traditions serve as important groundwork.

This book was released on 2015-06 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hot Music, Ragmentation, and the Bluing of American Literature examines the diverse ways in which African American "hot" music influenced American culture - particularly literature - in early twentieth-century America. Steven C. Tracy provides a history of the fusion of African and European elements that formed African American "hot" music, and considers how terms like ragtime, jazz, and blues developed their own particular meanings for American music and society. He draws from the fields of literature, literary criticism, cultural anthropology, American studies, and folklore to demonstrate how blues as a musical and poetic form has been a critical influence on American literature. -- from dust jacket.

Book Synopsis Judeo-Spanish Ballads from Bosnia by : Samuel G. Armistead
Download or read book Judeo-Spanish Ballads from Bosnia written by Samuel G. Armistead and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Judeo-Spanish folk literature of the Sephardic Jews of Bosnia, and with it their uncommonly rich balladry, has remained largely unknown to Western scholars. Since their move to Sarajevo in the sixteenth century, Serob-Croatian has displaced their original Spanish, and the entire culture is rapidly approaching extinction. This book preserved for posterity three fundamentally important groups of these rare ballads: Kalmi Baruch's Spanski romanse; ballads collected from the readers of the Sarajevo newspaper Jevrejski Glas; and five previously unedited eighteenth-century Bosnian ballads from a manuscript in the Jewish National and University Library in Jerusalem. Notes, abstracts in English, reproductions of the music itself, and other scholarly aids serve to make this colorful and strangely modern literature fully accessible to Hispanists, folklorists, and all students of comparative literature and Judaic culture.
Book Synopsis Hungarian Rhapsodies by : Richard Teleky
Download or read book Hungarian Rhapsodies written by Richard Teleky and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like the renowned American writer Edmund Wilson, who began to learn Hungarian at the age of 65, Richard Teleky started his study of that difficult language as an adult. Unlike Wilson, he is a third-generation Hungarian American with a strong desire to understand how his ethnic background has affected the course of his life. “Exploring my ethnicity,” he writes, “became a way of exploring the arbitrary nature of my own life. It was not so much a search for roots as for a way of understanding rootlessness - how I stacked up against another way of being.” He writes with clarity, perception, and humor about a subject of importance to many Americans - reconciling their contemporary identity with a heritage from another country. From an examination of photographer Andre Kertesz to a visit to a Hungarian American church in Cleveland, from a consideration of stereotypical treatment of Hungarians in North American fiction and film to a description of the process of translating Hungarian poetry into English, Teleky’s interests are wide-ranging. he concludes with an account of his first visit to Hungary at the end of Soviet rule.
