Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester The following pages have been written amidst many interruptions and completed amidst great difficulties. The excuse for their existence is to be found in the total absence of any adequate biography of their subject, and the attraction (to the author at any rate) of a varied and interesting career. My indebtedness to those who have made a study of the fifteenth century is acknowledged in the bibliography, but my obligations extend much further. My thanks are due to many librarians who have given me every facility to inspect manuscripts in their care, but to Mr. Falconer Madan of the Bodleian Library at Oxford I am under no ordinary debt of obligation. His consistent kindness and interest has made many paths smooth that would otherwise have been rough. I am indebted to Lord Leicester for his kindness in allowing me to examine a manuscript life of the Duke which forms part of his Library, and to Mr. Yates Thompson for a similar permission with regard to the Duke's Psalter. Still more do I desire to thank Dean Kitchin for his courtesy and kindness in sending me a transcript of a letter in a Durham manuscript, whilst Professor Oman has given me the great encouragement of his sympathy and advice. To Dr. Morris of Bedford I owe assistance on some points of difficulty, and Sir Alfred Scott-Gatty, Garter, was kind enough to answer several questions with regard to the Duke's armorial bearings. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explore the fascinating life of Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester, in this illuminating biography. As the son, brother, and uncle of English kings, Humphrey played a pivotal role in the political and cultural landscape of medieval England. A skilled soldier and military strategist, he fought in the Hundred Years' War and acted as Lord Protector of England during the minority of his nephew, Henry VI. But Humphrey was also a controversial figure, known for his reckless behavior and fractious personality. Despite this, he is widely recognized for his intellectual pursuits and support of humanism, which made him a significant patron of the Renaissance in England. This book provides a detailed look at the life and legacy of one of England's most complex historical figures.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Third Part of Henry the Sixt: The Players' d104 of "the True Tragedie," Etc; Of 1595; With the First Folio d104 of 1623 AT Folio line 232 of the Third Part of the Henry Sz'xt/z, now before us in this volume, is the stage direction Here taey come down. If Shakespeare wrote that, he wrote it almost exactly three hun dred years ago as this volume goes to press - in precisely the words which a stagewright to-day would use, to indicate that, at this point, the actors upon the stage were to pass to the front of it. At line F. 1848 of the Second Part of this play there occurs the stage direction, Bea' put fartil, which ex presses the actual poverty and meanness of the stage for which Shakespeare wrote. At that point the spectators have been asked to imagine a stately audience room in King Henry's palace. The dead body of Duke Humphrey is to be visited Warwick says to the assembled court, Enter his chamber, View his lifeless corpse; a bed is brought in, and the dialogue passes to that famous discussion of the signs of violent death as Opposed to the mortal linea ments of the timely and peace parted. It seems to me that these two stage directions together present us at once with the exact histrionic situation of the date: namely, a stage that was comic in its practical disabilities, and a Shakespeare, fully conscious of its disabilities, writing the stately drama that was to tax the opulence of the stage that was to be. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'I delight in this work', wrote the young Victoria shortly after she became Queen. She was an engaging creature, high-spirited and eager to be 'amused'. But her early years were difficult ones. Fatherless from the age of eight months, she was brought up at Kensington Palace in an atmosphere thick with family feuds, backbiting and jealousy - the focus of conflicting ambitions. Though her uncle William IV was anxious to bring her into Court circles, her German mother and the calculating John Conroy were equally determined that she should remain under their control. The 'little Queen', who succeeded to the throne a month after her eighteenth birthday, was greeted by a unanimous chorus of praise and admiration. She embraced the independence of her position and often forced her will on those around her. She met and married Albert, marking the end of her childhood and the beginning of a glorious legend. Alison Plowden was one of the most successful and popular historians of British history. Her bestselling books include: The House of Tudor, The Young Elizabeth, Lady Jane Grey and Danger to Elizabeth, all of which are available from The History Press.
