Book excerpt: Human, All Too Human Friedrich Nietzsche - Human, All Too Human: A Book for Free Spirits (German: Menschliches, Allzumenschliches: Ein Buch für freie Geister) is a book by 19th-century philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, originally published in 1878. A second part, Assorted Opinions and Maxims (Vermischte Meinungen und Sprüche), was published in 1879, and a third part, The Wanderer and his Shadow (Der Wanderer und sein Schatten), followed in 1880.The book is Nietzsche's first in the aphoristic style that would come to dominate his writings, discussing a variety of concepts in short paragraphs or sayings. Reflecting an admiration of Voltaire as a free thinker, but also a break in his friendship with composer Richard Wagner two years earlier, Nietzsche dedicated the original 1878 edition of Human, All Too Human to the memory of Voltaire on the celebration of the anniversary of his death, May 30, 1778. Instead of a preface, the first part originally included a quotation from Descartes's Discourse on the Method. Nietzsche later republished all three parts as a two-volume edition in 1886, adding a preface to each volume, and removing the Descartes quote as well as the dedication to Voltaire. This book represents the beginning of Nietzsche's "middle period", with a break from German Romanticism and from Wagner and with a definite positivist slant. Reluctant to construct a systematic philosophy, this book comprises more a collection of debunkings of unwarranted assumptions than an interpretation and "contains the seeds of concepts crucial to Nietzsche's later philosophy, such as the need to transcend conventional Christian morality";:back page he uses his perspectivism and the idea of the will to power as explanatory devices, though the latter remains less developed than in his later thought.

Book excerpt: "Human, All Too Human" marks a significant shift in Nietzsche's thought toward a more naturalistic and skeptical perspective. In this work, he adopts a more critical stance toward metaphysics and religion, exploring the psychological and cultural origins of human beliefs and values. This book is characterized by its aphoristic style and sharp wit, as Nietzsche dissects the follies and contradictions of human behavior. This is one of his largest works, spanning hundreds of topics and figures including Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Spinoza, Kant, Luther, Melanchthon, Darwin, Voltaire, Rousseau, Leibniz, Diogenes, Marcus Aurelius, Montaigne, Pascal, Jean Paul, Hume, Locke, Jean-Jacques, Emerson, Carlyle, Pascal, Bismarck and Schopenhauer. The original 1878 release was printed by Ernst Schmeitzner in Chemnitz, Germany. In 1879, "Assorted Opinions and Maxims" was added as a supplement, and in 1880, "The Wanderer and His Shadow" followed, completing what is often referred to as the first part of "Human, All Too Human." The combined works were later republished in a single volume in 1886, and this new translation is based off of that work. This new 2024 translation from the original German, Latin and Greek manuscript contains a new Afterword by the translator, a timeline of Nietzsche's life and works, an index with descriptions of his core concepts and summaries of his complete body of works. This translation is designed to allow the armchair philosopher to engage deeply with Nietzsche's works without having to be a full-time Academic. The language is modern and clean, with simplified sentence structures and diction to make Nietzsche's complex language and arguments as accessible as possible. This Reader's Edition also contains extra material that amplifies the manuscript with autobiographical, historical and linguistic context. This provides the reader a holistic view of this very enigmatic philosopher as both an introduction and an exploration of Nietzsche's works; from his general understanding of his philosophic project to an exploration of the depths of his metaphysics and unique contributions. This edition contains: • • An Afterword by the Translator on the history, impact and intellectual legacy of Nietzsche • Translation notes on the original German, Latin and Greek manuscript • An index of Philosophical concepts used by Nietzsche with a focus on Existentialism and Phenomenology • A chronological list of Nietzsche's entire body of works • A detailed timeline of Nietzsche's life and works

Book excerpt: One should only speak where one cannot remain silent, and only speak of what one has conquered-the rest is all chatter, "literature," bad breeding. My writings speak only of my conquests, "I" am in them, with all that is hostile to me, ego ipsissimus, or, if a more haughty expression be permitted, ego ipsissimum. It may be guessed that I have many below me.... But first I always needed time, convalescence, distance, separation, before I felt the stirrings of a desire to flay, despoil, lay bare, "represent" (or whatever one likes to call it) for the additional knowledge of the world, something that I had lived through and outlived, something done or suffered. Hence all my writings, -with one exception, important, it is true, -must be ante-dated-they always tell of a "behind-me."

Book excerpt: "Human, All Too Human: A Book for Free Spirits" is a philosophical work by Friedrich Nietzsche, first published in 1878. It marks a significant departure from Nietzsche's earlier works, introducing a more aphoristic style and a critical examination of traditional morality, religion, and human nature. The book is divided into several sections, each containing a series of short aphorisms, reflections, and observations on various aspects of human life and society. Nietzsche employs a keen wit and sharp critique as he explores themes such as individualism, morality, religion, culture, and psychology. In "Human, All Too Human," Nietzsche challenges conventional wisdom and invites readers to question deeply held beliefs and values. He rejects traditional notions of good and evil, advocating for a more nuanced understanding of human behavior and motivations. Nietzsche's emphasis on individual freedom, self-overcoming, and the pursuit of personal excellence resonates throughout the text. The book also reflects Nietzsche's growing disillusionment with German culture and society, as well as his fascination with the concept of the "free spirit" - the independent thinker who dares to question prevailing norms and constructs his own values. "Human, All Too Human" is often seen as a transitional work in Nietzsche's oeuvre, laying the groundwork for his later, more controversial writings such as "Thus Spoke Zarathustra" and "Beyond Good and Evil." It is celebrated for its boldness, intellectual depth, and provocative insights into the human condition.

Book excerpt: It is often enough, and always with great surprise, intimated to me that there is something both ordinary and unusual in all my writings, from the "Birth of Tragedy" to the recently published "Prelude to a Philosophy of the Future": they all contain, I have been told, snares and nets for short sighted birds, and something that is almost a constant, subtle, incitement to an overturning of habitual opinions and of approved customs. What!? Everything is merely-human-all too human? With this exclamation my writings are gone through, not without a certain dread and mistrust of ethic itself and not without a disposition to ask the exponent of evil things if those things be not simply misrepresented.

Book excerpt: German scholar and thinker Friedrich Nietzsche began his career as a linguist and philologist, but over time, his work became increasingly philosophical in its scope. He came to embrace a radical point of view that prized personal freedom and choice over virtually everything else. In Human, All Too Human, Nietzsche explores the triumphs and tragic shortfalls of human nature in an eminently readable series of aphorisms and short vignettes.
