The saving clause is a great help to those idealists who are inclined to look unwelcome facts in the face. It enables them to retain faith in their ideals, and at the same time to hold on to their intellectual self-respect. There are idealists of another sort who know nothing of their struggles and self-contradictions. Having formed their ideal of what ought to be, they identify it with what is. For them belief in the existence of good is equivalent to the obliteration of evil. Their world is equally good in all its parts, and is to be viewed in all its aspects with serene complacency. Now this is very pleasant for a time, especially if one is tired and [...]".

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Interior of Jesus and Mary, Vol. 2 of 2 Were the greatest monarch on earth, to render a similar service to the last of his subjects, we should say he had compromised his majesty as a sovereign, or his reputation for judgment as a man; and humanly speaking, the conclusion would be correct, for humiliations like this are inconsistent with the dignity of royalty, and neither natural affection, nor any motive Of the kind can render them admissible. But such a case would merely involve the humiliation Of a mortal, whereas in the present instance, it is a God who stoops beneath his own creatures, and who considers the degradation in no wise dero gatary to his infinite majesty. It was indeed his humanity which humbled itself so low, yet, the divine nature being united to that humanity, the humiliation reverted to the Man God, who eagerly desired and voluntarily embraced its abjection. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Death-Beds She has been, indeed, a good lady, said the old nurse; there is not a cottage in this place or neighbourhood where ner name has not been blessed. I never saw so kind, so humble, so holy a woman, said Mr. Grey: for she is not merely a pattern to the ladies of the land, but to the poorest creature that ever lived, she follows close in her Saviour's footsteps. I have known her many years, said Mr. Suther land, and she 'seems to be in the possession of every earthly blessing; happy as a wife, as a mother, as a daughter; beloved as a friend, rather than as a mistress, by her servants, who at the same time treat her with the tenderest respect. Her whole life has been blessed and holy, and from her earliest years she has been a fair example of the loveliest Christian graces. The poor are apt to complain of their hard lot, but humanly speaking (do not misunderstand me, merely humanly speaking) this is as hard a' lot as any lot of wretched poverty. Lady Kennedy is young, beautiful, of high rank, in the possession of large estates and great riches; and the world will grieve over her lot, for she has of late suffered much, and now she is going to be taken from what they would call perfect happiness. This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bible, Its Inerrancy, Its Interpretation, Its Instruction By the inerrancy of the Bible, we mean that the entire Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments, having been given by inspiration of God (2 Tim. 3:16, 17), are infallible; and therefore, they not only constitute the only and all-sufficient rule of faith and practice, but in addition thereto they present all the incidental facts of the text, whether relating to philosophy, science, history, or other subject, wholly without error. The evidence on this point can be produced at great length, along many lines, and without the slightest conflict or doubt. These lines of testimony to the inerrancy of the Bible are found in science, archaeology, criticism, fulfilled prophecy, Christ's statements, and in the Book itself. We will refer to these briefly in the order mentioned. It must be borne in mind at the outset, however, that the sublime doctrines of the Word, of which its inerrancy is one, are not susceptible of treatment on the basis of formal logic or natural philosophy. "The natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God; neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned" (1 Cor. 2:14). The Holy Spirit, He must be our teacher (John 14:26). Science is a general term and often means nothing more than the latest hypothesis or conjecture in an attempt to explain some phenomenon of nature. He has employed the comparative leisure of a summer vacation in putting them together, with the hope, that, if they are of any value and are worth being preserved, they may thus perhaps acquire a permanence, which, in their separate form, they could hardly hope to obtain. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Breath of God With Man: An Essay on the Grounds and Evidences of Universal Religion Human life is embosomed in mystery. Man is born in the midst of a veiled labyrinth, intricate and many chambered, whose long corridors are haunted by formidable shapes, larvae and lamia, besetting him with ghostly arts, alluring him with deceptive voices, and tempting him with fallacious appearances. The innocent are inexperienced, the cultured almost universally sophisticated, the devout enslaved by one or another of the multitudinous priesthoods of Christendom or Heathendom, the irreligious bewildered by the hypotheses which form themselves in lurid points upon the bosom of the darkness of their infidelity. The weak and the passive are drawn in the train of hereditary, national, or ecclesiastical forces, as nebulous particles that float in the extremities of a comet; while the powerful and apostate, according to their proclivities, conserve existing disorders, or precipitate destructive revolutions. The world in general possesses neither Church, University, or Society. The institutions which tenant their places serve but to occupy the ground until the real order appears. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concerning Prayer Its Nature, Its Difficulties, and Its Value The conclusion of Peace will leave Europe for many years face to face with economic, political and social problems of unexampled difficulty and a solution of these will have to be attempted by nations financially exhausted, vitally weakened and depressed by the acute moral and psychological reaction which, humanly speak ing, must necessarily follow an epoch of intense strain. Nothing but the sober determination, the quickened insight and the disinterested devotion, due to the permea tion of society by some great and creative spiritual force, can avail to meet the situation. Veni Creator Spiritus. In those who really believe in God the urgency of the need begets a presumption that it will be met - but not necessarily In the way In which any of us expect. What happened afterwards is lost to me, but to this day in my sleep I often see little Stella's sweet face and the stare of terror in her dark eves as the fire ran up her arm. This, however, is not wonderful, for I had, humanly speaking, saved the life of her who was destined to be my wife. The next event which I can recall clearly is that my mother and three brothers all fell ill of fever, owing, as I afterwards learned, to the poisoning of our well by some evil-minded person, who threw a dead sheep into it. It must have been while they were ill that Squire Carson came one day to the Vicarage. The weather was still cold, for there was a fire in the study, and I sat before the fire writing letters on a piece of paper with a pencil, while my father walked up and down the room talking to himself. Afterwards I knew that he was praying for the lives of his wife and children. Presently a servant came to the door and said that some one wanted to see him.
